Title: Ahh, the Classics!
Post by: WapitiTalk1 on March 01, 2018, 08:25:32 AM
Since we "kinda" derailed DoubleJ's Challenger thread, figured I'd start this to make amends  :chuckle:.

Do you own a classic ride?  If so, what is it and please post a pic and tell us a bit about it.  If you don't own one, what "would" you own if you got one.

My first car was a '69 Ford Fairlane.
Bought it for $300 drove it for about 6 years and sold it for $300. Had a pretty good case of rustworms on the quarter panels by then, but had a sweet running 302 with dual exhaust and glass pacs.
I wouldn't mind having it back as a project car.

I've had a bunch of classic cars and trucks, but the one I lusted after the most and never could afford (especially now) was a 1963 Corvette split window coupe, black with a red interior.

My Dad had a 1966 Shelby GT 350, 1968 Shelby GT 500 KR and a 1972 Boss Mustang.  He sold the 2 Shelby's a few weeks before I got my learner's permit.  He told me "Boy, you may hate me for this but I am saving your life."  He did give me the Mustang though.   I also had a 1969 Torino Fastback. Wish I still had any one of them.

I had a 69 Fairlane; it was my first car also. I had some money saved from baling hay that summerand pop pitched in the rest so I could get it (believe it cost $500; that was in 1977).  Was as four door, light blue, 289, 3 on the tree  ;).

Mine was 2 door coupe. I'll just say fit and finish are sooooo much better on new cars/trucks and ride/quietness is lightyears better than that car. Haha.
Maybe that is why old cars are so fun

:yeah: Very true.  It did keep Mustang alive in a hard time for sport cars.  mustang II was a huge seller for Ford.  Without this car the Fox body Stang likely would have been in peril.  140hp 4 speed stock.  2500lb car.  Just uncorking the exhaust and flipping the air cleaner lid over was a good 40hp increase.  I beat all the 305 irocs and a few of the 350 irocs on a rolling start.  It was very torquey and a tire burner.  70's were tough times and this car reflects it but it carried the torch for the future. Surely its nothing like a pre 73 musclecar.

I too would not trade my "Mustang" for any other Classic Ride out there!
She may not be as fast as the new ones, and her shocks wore out years ago but when it comes to dependability there's nothing like her. She gets us there, breaking down only when she feels like it.....have to admit, "the Dogs do complain then about the lack of shade".

I've always wanted a '77 Bronco.

I had one for a few years in the mid 90's. Like a damn fool I sold it. It was in ok shape, but I was in upstate NY so it had door jamb rust issues.

Here's my old rust bucket.  Big Red is a 68 Chevelle.  I "had" a really nice fishing boat a handful of years ago but it went by the wayside (sold) so I could have the old Chevy restored right.  She now lives fat and happy in my shop, only coming out to stretch her legs when the weather is decent.

I had a '66 mustang fastback for most of my highschool years, "safety red" color. Spent a fair amount of my time working on it before it was running well. It was actually my mom's first car and hadn't been driven for many years by the time I got my hands on it. Somewhere there are photos. The only thing I didn't like about it was the automatic transmission.

I'd like to get my hands on a Galaxie 500 someday.

I use to have a 1963 1/2 Galaxie 500 XL Fastback.  Mine was a 4 speed 390 car not the really awesome 427 model but they looked the same.  Like a dam fool, I sold it about 15 years ago.  :bash:

I regretfully let go of an opportunity to get a '67 Galaxie Convertible, but it needed a whole new interior and top. Couldn't see it being a feasible project for my budget at the time. Such a neat boat... car. lol

My very first car was a 57'Chevy BelAir, just like the one in the photo.  Had red and black interior.  Should have never ever let it go.  It was mint.

I have had and sold various older cars, 30's and 40's neeeding restoration (I would buy them then sell them at a profit years ago, back in the 70's).  Actually had a 29 Ford Roadster first year of college that I was attempting to street rod back in 1964/65, but had to sell it when I went in the service.  Another I should have kept. :)

Currently have a 97 30th Anniversary Camaro SS Convertible.  Only made 957 30th SS's and of that total only 251 were convertibles.  Fun car, with a 6 speed manual but a garage queen that is going to find a new home this summer.

I had a 72 Chevelle for a bit. Loved cruising around in it but I’m not good at doing things part way and it was eating at me that it sat so much. Sold it and miss it sometimes, but allowed me to upgrade hunting gear and do more hunts selling it.

I had a 1976 Buick LeSabre it was a nice ride. I have a 76 Nova hatchback I started working on but the trunk rust is beyond my abilities to repair. Had a 77 Nova former police car I bought for parts. My dream car is a 1970 Chevelle SS, and I really want a 1955 step side 4x4 with a v8. I love old classics, but they're getting to the point that a house is cheaper.

Ahh, my first was a '61 Impala I bought at an estate auction in '86. It only had 40k original miles on. I paid a whopping  $225  :chuckle: jump started it and drove her home.
It was pretty stock, 4 door with a trunk you could fit an elk in.  That car carried all my camping, fishing gear for 2 years. I sold it for $400 and heard she went to the bay area. Prolly got lowered and hydraulics installed  :yike:

Yes you are right, My first car was a white 67 Dodge Charger. Sad that I don’t still have it as I planned to. I bought that car from my parents for 100$ a month for a year which was a bundle for a 16 year old in 79. I traded it back to my dad when I was in college during the gas shortages cause I couldn’t afford the 6 miles to a gallon I was getting. I had told him NOT under any circumstances sell that car!!! He got tired of seeing it around and sold it in 88-89 for 1500. The shame is that in 1966 they made 30,000 and in 67 they made only 3500 in the first quarter of the year and halted production, so the 67 fully restored is very difficult to replace

The shame is that in 1966 they made 60,000 and in 67 they made only 3500 in the first quarter of the year and halted production, so the 67 fully restored is very difficult to replace

I know 🤬
P.s. I edited my post it was 30k not 60k.  Either way still not many made in 67

Here’s a couple. Chevrolet has a 502, its the wife’s grocery getter. :chuckle:
The Buick was my dad’s.
I have a big block 68 Camaro RS/SS too but don’t have photos of that on my phone.

Rick, when you and your wife are ready, I'll take the Chevelle off your hands.
:chuckle:
I almost bought that Nova that was in the classifieds because it matched the chevelle so well.  I really should drive these but just don't so I couldn't convince myself to buy the Nova.

That was a nice car, but only a six!  All the Chevy muscle cars from the 60s to 72 are pretty high dollar these days!

I sure could have used that in my old nova. After the 67 Caddy coup, my uncle thought I needed less horsepower, hence the six. He allowed me to buy my 69 "fast back" mustang while he was in Alaska because I told him it only had a "little" 302  HA,HA,HA. That one still cracks me up. Got me in a lot of trouble and a special license, but man what a car. Then came the 72 Pinto with a "little" 4 banger. Am 2bbl, headers along with some other slight engine modifications. Was dropped a bit in the front, had big ol fattys in the rear and little skinneys up front. Had a 72 1/2 cab Bronco, a 1950 ford pu that was tricked out and lowered a bit. I wish I could have kept them all. Well, maybe not the pinto  :chuckle:

@huntnphool

Where's the rest of what goes with the buzzin full dozen? It's a classic now, isn't it? Or almost?!

That has to be a dry sump oil system doesn't it?

Correct, the same engine was used for many many years (40?) before a complete redesign for the second generation Murcielago and originally had a wet sump system.

I sold a beautiful 1967 Camaro, 383 stroker, 4spd, 411's for this baby, The Camaro was fun but it seems everybody has one, and she passed everything but a gas station, We have owned this 76 Bronco for 3 years now and have driven it Twice as much as we drove the Camaro in half the time....

Aaaaah, the ole bobtail!
