Just throwing this out there -
My buddy that has been planning on running my boat south with me just let me know he can't get the time off of work. So, I'll either be running it south by myself, or taking on a victim er, passenger so I can run straight through. Nice to have somebody on so I can take a nap and not have to anchor up.
The deal is:
Basically a nearly-free cruise through the Inside Passage of British Columbia on a 47' steel commercial troller. Just get yourself to Ketchikan and chip in for your half of the food. Planning on leaving Ketchikan early AM on the 18th, ideally arriving Anacortes evening of March 22nd. It's about a 110 hour run. We'll push straight through, but if the WX is really bad we may get held up to wait for a chance to get around Cape Caution. Delay could be from a few hours to a few days. The entire trip will basically be out of cell coverage, so bring your movies and books with you.
Preferred candidate is someone I have "known" through the site for a while and has some ocean experience. OR, someone who might want to work on the boat for this summer's salmon/tuna season. This would be a good way for me to see if I think you'd make it, and for you to see if this kind of thing suits you. In either case, it would have to be a person who won't be denied entry into Canada if we needed to land for whatever reason. Ability to cook gets bonus points, as does willingness to do the odd chore on the boat while we're under way. Deploying/retrieving stabilizers, dishes, etc. You won't be a slave, but it's good to know I'll get a hand when I need one.
Going through the Inside Passage is easy, but requires a pair of eyes out front to keep the logs off of my paint. There are some open-ocean transits that we'll have the standard winter swell to deal with, and it could get a little tall at times. Safety is paramount, and I won't take unnecessary risks to meet a desire return date.
If you're interested, please PM me. I've got this offer out to a few friends and family, so if one of them can go I'll take them. But looking to firm this up sooner than later, and if there's a serious HuntWa'er out there that I think I could hang with and wants to do it I'll take them.

This would be a blast, but I have to work. :llam:

Ah, you were on my short list Boss. I know you got ocean chops...

My longest st sea period was 108 days straight in the Indian Ocean summer time, It was like hell had found the ship it was so hot, and humid. 👹
I hear the Persian Gulf is worse though.

Man i would die to do that!
Before my uncle passed away we had discussed doing a turn and burn in his 26' Nordic tug that he totally refurbished. It had more than enough range to reach Ketchican without refueling. Sadly I never made it happen.
How long with the vessel be in Anacortes?
We should do a meet, drink and cigar HE get together!(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180309/e2436a0a97dd6202d58200c00fe8a522.jpg)

I'll probably be in Anacortes for a few days, playing it pretty loose for the first week I'm home.
A HuntWa get together in Anacortes would be fun -

Spot has been filled, will be homeward bound in 10 days, and hoping Poseidon is in good humor.

I'm not seeing much for the Maiden head to stand on. :yike:

What a incredible opportunity to see the inside passage. I’m not surprised it was filled so quickly. Be safe and enjoy...I’m am so damn jealous!
-
Did the Inside Passage for 10 years working on tugs between Seattle and all over Alaska. Watch for mountain goats around the Buttedale Area on the N side way up high. Watch for drunk natives in Llama Pass. We t-boned a native gillnetter one night right in front of Bella Bella. They tried to cut in front of us a bit too close and didn't quite make it. Canadian CG showed up and sent us on our way and dealt with the natives. :chuckle: Have a safe trip.
-
Maybe ill pass ya
-
Don't tell me Ridgeratt is your mate on this trip? Haha.
If i was retired and could have an awesome anti emetic, i'd be all over that trip. Good luck. Sounds like a fun run!!!!!

Perhaps this is where you watch for the obstacles. :dunno:

Have a safe trip! Made it many times to Kodiak, and twice out west and back many years ago. We always made it a fun trip.

Ridgeratt is on the short list, whether he likes it or not! I'll Shanghai him one of these days.
We are NOT painting my boat pink, tho.

I'd have done it.
I've done the inland passage cruise several times.
I love when we come back to tour room and the towels are folded into animal shapes.
What shore excursions do you offer?
-
I've made this trip a couple times on the Alaska Marine Hwy, would love to do it again on a smaller vessel. If you ever have another opening like this, I have 22 years S.E. AK guiding experience (Ketchikan and Craig area) and a 100t capt. license.

I have a different brochure than the ones you've been reading Dan-o!

That’s not fair, in all the cruises I made I never got my towels back from the ships laundry folded in animal shapes. >:(
But I did have some great shore excursions. ;)

Was a great trip, pulled in Anacortes early hours of Saturday AM. Went outside from Milbanke Sound around Cape Caution, had a little wx in the Straits of Georgia Thurday night/Fri morning, but pushed through.
588 nm in in 88 hours, not too shabby. Visited my dearly missed family, ready to take on my final leg to Seattle starting tomorrow.
If anybody is interested in bringing the boat up through the Ballard Locks on Tues evening, I could take a couple of folks. Probably pick ya up at Shilshole, up through the locks, then tie up in Fisherman's Terminal. Celebratory beer at the Highliner and an Uber ride back to your car at Shilshole is on me.
Requirements - some boat handling experience preferred, but I can coach greenhorns through it if they're willing to listen. Looks like it's gonna be rainy.
Pm me if interested-
-
Cool offer especially for anyone whom hasn't been through the locks on a boat before.

Yes sir he does,
I have all my vacation days spent already on hunting this fall or I would have been begging to float her back with you!
Be Safe!

It's that time - planning on making the run south again, taking names of folks who want to discuss jumping on for the trip (see first post).
Anticipated dates -
Pick up in Ketchikan on March 16th, sport fish halibut and spot prawns for a couple of days, then leave Ketchikan on Tues the 19th. Arrive Anacortes late Friday night/early Sat. All weather dependant, of course.
Additional duties this year will be to take pics for Jackelope, and be a taste-tester for any hooch that Special T brings on board when he meets us in Anacortes. :chuckle:
-
Man this sounds like a pretty awesome journey.
-
It's a bit of a grind, but I make it as fun as I can. Done the passage 10 times now, but it's a little different each time. Always see some cool stuff.
And logs...We always see logs. :chuckle:
-
tagging for the requested pics

Last year's sport fishing take before we left-

Funniest-looking Kings I've ever seen

Man I miss the salt. Used to sein out of kodiak. Jealous of the poor sap you get to bring her home with you
-
Back around '90 a buddy of mine loaded up his Kayak, slid it into the water from his back yard in Silverdale and paddled from there up through the inside passage to Alaska. :o
-
I wish I could do this!
Bad!
Safe travels!

Was his name Forrest? :chuckle:
-
If only I had enough time off (I don't)... I've got enough Alaska miles it'd only cost me $6 for the flight in to Ketchikan!
Someone oughta pounce on this opportunity. They're so rare.
-
Love that route!! I've done it several times mostly in 36' charter boats but did skipper a 148' salvage barge for Ketchikan to Olympia. If I didn't have to work I would do it in a heartbeat!
-
Ok folks, got it covered. Thanks for the interest, and keep your eyes peeled for the "@jackelope special photo album".
-
Sounds like fun..I will be watching for this next year ...and curious what ur plans are for tuna this year..
-
Last year's sport fishing take before we left-
Is that Heater hiding behind that halibut?
-
So long Sitka.
-
good thing you didn't take me, as I'd already be begging to drop a line :chuckle:
KFhunter: "can we fish yet?"
Skillet: "no, we're just getting underway and haven't even got out of the bay yet!"
20 minutes later...
KFhunter: "can we fish yet?"
Skillet: "after we get some distance in I might know a spot to drop a line"
20 minutes later....
KFhunter: "are we close to that spot? can we fish yet?"
Skillet: " >:( I can see this is going to be a looong trip"

KTN bound, should be there by Saturday morning. Bringing a mascot along on this southbound journey, for @jackelope 's photoalbum.
-
Safe travels.
-
@KFhunter, haha, ya, no fishing until I get to ketchikan. 250 nautical miles to go, and I'm under the gun to make some tides to get through a couple of passes. Couldn't go outside, it is tore up out there. Was blowing SE 40 with 17' last night. Bashing into that is not my idea of fun.
Safe travels.
Thanks man, looking forward to this trip.
-
Stay safe my friend.

Was this for the R2AK? I have a friend that attempted last time and is building a boat to do it this year.
-
Ok next year I'm gonna get in line. I cook ok....and only chum sporadically.

No, he just up and left one day. Said he found himself on that trip and really needed it, although he said at times he thought it was all over.

Fair winds and following seas. And more pitchers.
-
Have a safe trip!

Quick update and pics -
Wx has been sketchy until yesterday, slowed me down a bit. Arrived KTN, picked up Rich. He got to experience St Patricks day in Ketchikan. They take it pretty seriously here, with a 50' parade and everything.
Went and sport fished spot prawns yesterday, ended up with a fine haul. Rich is running gear like a champ.
-
Here's a pic of coming into Ketchilan last night.

Made it to Everett, hauled out, mission accomplished.
Really want to thank Woodchuck's buddy Rich for taking the time off of work to run the boat south with me. Weather was an issue, but he rolled with the punches and always kept a positive attitude. The best kind of guy to have on the boat with you. We had a lot of fun, and he's always welcome back on the boat.
A few more pics for @jackelope - sorry to say, the secret weapon produced no fish this time... But it did help us kill a few beers.
-
And the last pic of the boat in the slings here in Everett.
Now the work begins.
-
Looking good!
-
Very nice. Glad to hear you had safe passage.
-
Ha! So funny. I know Rich, i'm going to have to ask him about his trip as it looked awesome.

Skillet, your posts are some of my favorites, loved the pictures! Thank you
