Title: AR BUILD HELP! **UPDATED COMPLETE**
Post by: Mongo Hunter on March 09, 2018, 08:06:21 AM
So please bare with me this post will be long.

I was working on getting all the parts for my AR PDW pistol build. Well according to all the specs from the manufacturers I should have ended up with a 10" rail and a 10.875" barrel overall. The barrel is a 7.5" and the flash can I ordered from Midwest is supposed to be 3.875" long. I know I'm running really tight be I thought I would have the clearance.

in the end, the barrel to tip of the flash can is 10" and my rail ended up being about 10.125. so an 1/8th inch too long on the rail and almost and inch short on the barrel. I'm getting frustrated being I think I have 2 options. either buy a 8" barrel which still may not be enough clearance OR buy another rail an inch shorter...I just don't know what would be best. need some help from someone who may have gone through something similar.

Thanks guys

If it's 223/556 you could get a 1/2X28 to 1/2X28 thread extension. or the proper size for whatever caliber you have.

It shouldn't matter 22lr is .223 22mag is .224 as is .223/556 if you're at all nervous you could hone it out the 1000th of an inch if its in fact necessary which i doubt and at the of the day it's just chunk of metal that doesn't know what's being fired through it.

Option 2? Is there a longer break than the midwest flash can? 3" or so?

Did you look at the Noveske KX3 or KX5?

The KAK can is 3.250 (3 1/4").

https://www.joeboboutfitters.com/KAK-INDUSTRY-1-2x28-223-5-56-FLASH-CAN-p/kak-flashcan-223.htm

You could set it a little further out on the 1/2-28 muzzle threads with a jam but. It wouldn't matter due to the fact it wouldn't be seen because the handguard would cover it. Unless you have seriously  sensative compulsive, obsessive disorder! Then of course you would never sleep at night until you get a different barrel or handguard and correct the issue properly for your expections and perceived outcome.     :chuckle: :chuckle:

The Surefire WARDEN blast diffuser is 3 1/2" in length.

I looked at the Kak and the Noveske, they both are 3.25", the Midwest is 3.375". I bought the Midwest hoping that little extra would work. I got it all together this weekend. its doesn't look bad overall just not the look I was going for. hard to tell from the picture but the break is just inside the handguard. I found a guy that will machine a 1" barrel extension for $68 if I decided I don't want to leave it this way. we'll see how the final product works.

Check this out. I stumbled across it while checking out some sales e-mails I received. This is the KAK 1/2-28 extended flash can. 5" in length. That should get you where you want to be length wise.

Maybe it's the angle but it looks like your barrel is contacting the hand guard

Nice job but it looks very scary. I see it has the Diane Feinstein 6,000 round a second, fully automatic, cop-killer, magazine clip. How many times has it fired itself since you completed it? Probably quite a few times, I'm thinking.

Now the big question.... How does it shoot 🍻

hopefully here in the next 2 weeks or so ill get out and test it. I have a case of 500rds of .223 coming today specifically for this gun. The gas block is adjustable and Ive never fiddled with one of those so first task is dial that thing in. then run the snot out of it till I cant hold onto the handguard anymore...then do it again lol.

The lower is all aces. Spikes tactical lower and enhanced LPK (of course, I love Spikes), and the brace is an SB tactical PDW. no real worries there.

The upper however is Franken gun. Pretty much all donated or parts lying around. Andersen upper, DPMS Barrel, Midwest flash can, Gunshow rando BCG (im really worried about it), donated MLOK rail and Gas block.

So I will be running pretty much all 500 through this thing to trust it. once Im sure it will work then I got to add my optic, handstop, sling, light, ect. I dont want to spend a bunch on accessories yet without knowing it works first.

I am curious how hot the hand guard will get with the flash can so close?

I ask because I have never shot one where the flash can or suppressor is completely under the hand guard like that.

Interesting look, I like!

So did a quick shoot this evening. Couple things.

1) makes really cool fireballs.
2) make sure you put the right sping in the buffer tube. That way you dont keep giving it gas and it still wont lock back. Duh!

So range trip was short. Ill get out again this weekend...with correct spring lol.

MH, are you going to stay with the open sites on this or do you have plans for some type of optic?

I want to put some type of optic on my Sig MCX pistol but I can't decide between a red dot type optic or something like a 1-4 scope.  I like how the Vortex Spitfire and Burris 332 "look" but I'm also of the belief, function, trumps everything else.

Well I'm really partial to Eotechs but man they hurt to spend the $500 on one. Ive heard really good things about Holosun and Vortex. Holosun makes a holographic sight that has a similar redical to the Eotech, longer battery life (like 50,000 hours), two power sources, "auto awake" so its always on AND its like $300. I think I'm going to give that one a go. Its the HS510C if I remember right.

I have the sig romeo5 on my 300blk and i like it a lot. The vortex has the diode glued in a weird spot that is in the field of view and my eyes were constantly drawn to it if that doesn't bother you then it's a good option also. Here's a good toture test on the sig romeo5.

FEATURES:
-2 MOA Red-Dot provides 10 illumination settings (8 daylight plus 2 NV) for visibility in all light conditions
-MOTAC™ (Motion Activated Illumination) powers up when it senses motion and powers down when it does not. Provides for optimum operational safety and enhanced 50,000+ hour battery life
-Integrated M1913 Picatinny interface provides industry-standard mounting options for a wide range of applications
-Dependable waterproof (IPX-7 rated for complete water immersion up to 1 meter) and fog-proof performance
-Includes a M1913 Picatinny low mount riser and a co-witness 1.41” riser mount

Well I've been to the range 3 times now. still doesn't function properly. first outing was totally my bad, had a rifle buffer spring in there, obviously wont work properly. second time out had the right spring but still had problems, went to the local gun shop and they recommended a heavier buffer, so I bought an H3. 3rd time went the next day, better but still the same problems. gun will not fully cycle despite adjusting the gas block up and down I don't know how many times. I got closer, I was getting good ejection (about 3:30) but then randomly I got one that just fell out of the chamber. So last thing I'm trying is swapping the bolt. it was a questionable one from years ago I had lying around as a backup. its a AR-15 type BCG with and is not full weight. so I borrow a Spikes one from a buddy that's a full weight, high quality BCG. If this doesn't work I'm at a total loss. wish me luck!

You could use a regular gas block that way you know it's getting fully gased. :dunno: :dunno: :dunno:

From what I noticed the gun actually was getting closer to proper operation when I had it turned down. I think right now its only 1.5 turns open. My guess at this point it might be a combination of the BCG still moving too fast and a S**TY BCG. The added weight of the "Full auto" BCG and H3 buffer might slow things down enough. Also like I said that old BCG was questionable.
