Title: Spring in the Wenaha
Post by: clearwater on March 15, 2018, 12:26:43 PM
Well....I finally got selected for a spring bear hunt!!! I can’t express how excited I am 😁. I’ve never gotten the opportunity to focus on bear so I’m stoked to have this spring opportunity. With that said, I’ve been in the Wenaha a few times in the fall helping friends with quality elk tags but haven’t been up there in the early spring. I’m curious what suggestions folks might have for access in the spring and general timeframe for snow melt?
Thanks

I’m not worried about the conditioning, just wish the snow was melted.

Have a great hunt. Glad a tag was drawn for someone who has spent time there. Post pics of your bear!

I am betting it got slammed with snow today, we woke up to a hard wet snow at camp. Got about 2 inches it melted off down low but was still snowing in the high country on my drive out today.

What area were you in? Hoping that snow melts quick and I can get in there from the south for the opener. ☀️☀️☀️

Unless you have time set aside for multiple trips be patient. If its not an early spring and gets warm and greens up you will have better luck waiting until later in the season for the bears to be out roaming for feed and the boars to be looking for sows.. Lots of guys can't wait to get over there and go for the opener or soon after and that's all the time they have and it only gets better. Early also means everyone is going in at the same general spot so you won't be alone in there...Its a fun hunt just don't go to early is my advise..

I have a spot dialed in when the snow lifts but need to gets some more ammo loaded for it.  Easy 1050 yard shot but the pack is 11 miles round trip on the trail or 2+ miles straight up and down.  How bad do I want a bear  :bdid: ???

Was down there this weekend, I have never seen so much wolf sign and wolves in my life.  Tracks every where, had one wolf at about 80 yards broadside, heard at least two more below me kill something.  Then heard more at night.  Quite a surreal experience.

That is terrible news, I’ve heard from a couple people that guide in the blues that support what you saw.  Between the wolves and another group the elk numbers are crashing very quickly, sad deal.  I’m not sure how much the wolves impact bear populations?

Nothing new. I have seen wolves in the wenaha and surrounding units for the past 6 years. This last season was the worst by far though. There are a couple good size packs in the area

I’m planning on spend a few nights in the backcountry and haven’t ever backpacked in wolf country....plenty used to the olympics and hanging food bags in trees. Anything special I should consider?

You don’t need to hang food bags in trees for anything other then mice IMO.

ESPECIALLY there.

We have cougars coming out our ears over here.  Way more an issue than bears. In fact I think packrats and skunks are more trouble than bears.  Just keep a,tidy campb and carry a sidearm. Be ready for all weather.  I drive to work in snow and drive home in sun and 60.  Gawd I love it over here.

Wolfs wont bother you. Might kist keep you up at night. Listen to them every year in Oregon and idaho have had some as close as 10 yards working elk they see you and run. Pack a sidearm put a laser on it

I figured they’d be running if they see me, just wasn’t sure if anyone was doing anything different around their camps that I hadn’t thought about.  Thanks again to everyone that’s sent me a pm offering advice and help with the hunt, it’s been greatly appreciated 👍

After packing my last 4 out of 5 bulls out on my back I decided to upgrade to an exo pack a few months ago. I don’t have a lot of extra cash and it took a lot of convincing from a good friend. So far it’s been the most comfortable backing pack I’ve ever used and I’m hoping to see how it feels with some bear meat on it. 3 more weeks!!!

We got tags for the Oregon Weneha, and this weekend the first snow drift across the road that we came to we got out to check it out and there was a big ol wolf track right down the middle of the drift/road.  No other boot marks or any other tracks in the snow, just a single big ol wolf track.  we checked around to see if there was other tracks around the drift, but just the one.  Soo, my opening weekend report on the South Blues is as to be expected:  Lots of snow and Couldn't get very far up at all.  :o :o :o We're gonna wait 2 weeks and hope some of the snow melts off and we can get in there and get after em!  Hopefully you guys on the North end were able to get in somewhere's and get in some hunting.  Good luck to all!

We’ve seen three bears so far, but nothing to write home about. Way less pressure when you’re shooting them with a camera! 😂

We had a great first weekend. Spent 2 nights and 3 days in the wilderness. I saw 1 bear and we put about 25 miles on the ground. The weather was great, sun, rain, hail and snow 😂. Couldn’t have asked for a better first trip. I can’t wait for the next trip in a couple of weeks.

I'm borrowing a buddies truck in Walla Walla. It's pretty much unstoppable depending on temperature. At the milk shakes as of yesterday there was 99". I'm just wondering how far down I'll have to snowshoe. Bears should be down low hopefully. Thinking if I make it to head out buck ridge and drop off the left fork.

Are you thinking you be able to drive behind the slopes to start your hike onto buck ridge? Or starting your hike from the paved road?

I'm hoping to drive as far as sawtooth and Deadman, hunting in between. Get out on the ridgetops and spot something down low.

I can just about guarantee a huge snowdrift within a quarter mile of getting over the top of the ridge and on skyline.. Then its close to three mile hike to sawtooth trailhead and a little closer to buck ridge. I did that two years ago the week before memorial weekend thinking same as you but couldnt get around that snow drift .. There will be lots of snow in the treeline until you hit the open ridges that add to the adventure..

No body has driven any further than the 46-64 fork so I'm making that base. Snowshoed towards Deadman, one more turn to go. I've forgotten how snowshoes are really difficult to sit in. Tough on hip flexors as well. Hurts so good

Well, I glassed some terrain for a bit with my eyes closed. Didn't see any bears. I dropped a bunch of elevation side hilled for a bit and am pretty sure I have 2 broken hip socket bones. Note to self, befriend snowmobile people. I just can't seem to find a good spot to glass bare hillsides. Not because there are none there is. Just few and far between.

I know, I was just excited to make it. My ass had just let go of the seat. It was fairly dangerous. I rolled off into the wolf fork a couple hundred feet back in 08' or 09' in my tundra. Not cool. Sorry if you guys had to wait for the wrecker back then.

Well got wet last night at 1:19am. Had to crawl in the backseat . Got set up early this morning at a good vantage point of some bare hillsides below this picture. About 20 degrees colder than yesterday. Rain packed the snow so I haven't needed the snowshoes yet.

Well there is the snow melt from yesterday to today. I snapped that pic on my way by this morning. Decided to head the opposite direction and walk down what we call windy ridge. It's where I could see openings from yesterday's hike. I gotta say one of the biggest issues I'm having is vision. It is so bright, can't hardly even see with glasses on. Much better being partly overcast today.

My rifle is a sako finnlight 300wsm. Claw sling which I rarely use. I lost most vision in my right eye due to an accident 15 years ago so I keep it unslung due to shooting left handed now. It's not natural to throw it up left handed so I feel having it slung on my shoulder could be the difference of getting the shot off. 5-20x50 huskemaw blue ring that I have a few different turrets for.

Well, I waited a couple hours and never saw anything. Must have bedded or gave me the slip.
The guys that said it is early were right. With that said I think there may be a bear here and there but a guy still needs to wait a week or more. I knew it was early but wanted to get out and take in some fresh air. Upon returning home tomorrow I'm breaking out the ankle weights. That snow on top of the snowshoes adds a considerable amount to each step. That and I'm not used to sinking 2"-1' each step. Not complaining, just something I had not accounted for.
The grass is sprouting up high, but not enough to sustain anything yet. There are purple and yellow flowers out, not sure if the bears eat them. If you guys get out soon, take a minute and listen to the birds and squirrels when alone. Pretty soothing listening to them doing what they do. I'll take a look around in the morning and update if needed. Heading back in a few weeks to continue the search. Good luck guys.

I missed a really pretty brownish red colored bear Monday night. Headed in for 4 days on the 24th to try and redeem myself. If you have a wenaha tag get out there, lots of bears moving around

You can drive to Godman now.  Last little drifts from last week right at the top should be gone.  Still have big drifts on the Bluewood side.  You can go up Skyline to the Chase mountain turnoff, but then it's sketchy after that.  I imagine there are still some good drifts out behind Bluewood.  Good luck to the remaining Wenaha tag holders.  My son got his cinnamon a few years ago during the Memorial day weekend!

Crushing mother nature never works out so well...

Thanks for all the pics.  Keep at it.  Great for taking your daughter.

Well this morning was miserable, 40 mph sustained, snow , sleet, fog, colder than crap. Fog just lifted but not for long. Sun is coming through in places. That's it for me.
Had a great time getting a bear with my buddy. Shot at one myself. Saw others and just couldn't connect. I get the enjoyment out of all these trips, but have to say I'm disappointed in myself. I should have been able to make it happen with my experience and knowledge of the west Wenaha. I can't shake the feeling of I could have tried harder. We don't get to many chances through life so each one feels a bit more important ya know. Leaving a tag on the table, especially a predator tag doesn't feel good. I'm on my way out now and my brain is telling me every log and dark spot is a bear. Funny how when you love what we love so much you never want to stop.

You gave it more than most, and most wont fill their tag much less try as hard as you have.  Spending time in that country is well worth it, you’ll be back someday.

Goodtimes ! The weather for us was critical - need cloudy nites, cloudy days this time of year.   Sunny or foggy days resulted in zero sightings and then need low wind too with the swirling canyons and limited chance of a follow shot.  Had my chance at a huge one and muffed it with equipment malfunction combined with  bad luck hitting a limb but appreciated buddys getting me in the spot to be successful.  Next time I will just go when weather is likely to be optimal or hike in early on the snow when sunny days are less a problem.

Well I've been eating ground meat mixed with 7% pork fat from the bear we took and it is fantastic.
