So.....
I drew Kapowsin Spring Bear. :-)
I used to hunt there for deer and elk...... I'm old enough to have hunted elk there when it was open for muzzleloader without a permit.
I probably haven't been there in a dozen years, but I'm sure I can still drive to the gates.
I'll be able to hunt quite a bit on this tag.
But to the point: I'm not above asking for help.
Anyone who wishes to share any starting points or other info, please feel free to PM me.
I don't want your honey hole..... oh wait...... of course I want your honey hole.
Seriously, any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Dan

They open all the gates open on the south side for spring bear hunters so you can drive everywhere. That’s why I don’t put in for it because I like walking around the closed gates but makes it nice I’m sure to get back in further and get animals out
-
100$ for the spring bear permit access to get in the gate, can only hunt the main gate(south gate). Find some grassy roads back in the gates they open up for spring bear hunters only- preferably ones with 10 y/o trees on/near them and walk around those until you find one. Good luck

Good Luck!

where do you get these permits? the hancock website has them listed at $375?

Seriously call Clyde , he will point you in the right direction

Your packet will probably have a contact. Reduced price just for the bear season time period. No scouting ahead of time when I had it a few years ago. Have good tires.
-
Awesome. Thanks.
-
Low success rate for spring bears in there, I wish they would open up the north side for that hunt! Good luck and beat those odds!
-
Thanks, all.
Should e a fun excuse to spend some time in the woods.
I'd noticed the low success rate. 'that surprised me. I thought it was primo bear country....
-
Some pointerz, bears poop in the woods if you find bear poop you might find bears. Picnic baskets and jelly donuts are good camo. You can never go wrong with wearing bacon scented clothes.
You're welcome :chuckle:

Doesn’t help that Hancock puts out bait barrels on the other side of the river you can’t hunt in an effort to feed the bears to keep the bears off the trees... :twocents:

Oh, dang.
I hadn't heard that.
-
Yeah it doesn’t make sense if they want bears killed, they should open up that side.
-
:(
I didn't know they lured them with bait.
I guess that makes sense if you're a timber company.
-
Hancock does some odd ball things for sure.
-
With that being said I still saw two bears and screwed up with a clean miss at 200 yards like a bonehead a couple springs ago so I’d rather have the permit than be not selected :bash:
-

I'm guessing that's why it's a tough hunt, but I wouldn't let that get you down. You'll be out chasing bears when most of us can't, plus, the bonus is you might find some nice antlers down those open gates.
-
Agreed.
Worst case is it's an excuse to get out in the woods.
-
Plenty of bears on the south side, they won't walk up and smell your barrel though..so finding some crappy steep drainage with a long ridge will work..a place they feel comfortable

Gotta admit, I'm getting kind of excited for this.
Haven't been there in so long I don't even know what will be familiar.
:IBCOOL:
-
Good luck to you. I don't know about spring time in there but I hunting a LOT in there during the archery seasons. LOTS of elk, LOTS of grouse, LOTS of deer (when its not deer season), and we did see bear sign. We didn't see any bears but we did see a big ol kitty with no shot sadly... I hope you get one! We talked to other people that saw them early morning during September. With the cooler temps I hope they are out and roaming more for your hunt!
-
Thanks!
I just bought a bear call from BearmanRik on here. Can't wait to get it.
I think they come with a 2 bear guarantee the first year. :dunno:

Maybe I misunderstood the guarantee on the bear call...... ;)
Either way, I'm excited to get my new bear call and hunt griz (ok.... black bears) this spring.

With pink crocs? I don't have one of the calls but I would assume the pink crocs are a must for the outfit and call to work...

Well, my bear thread took an interesting turn. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
So, anybody wanna PM me any private info about hankock bears?

Sorry bro. Your Avatar does bring out the best in us lol! All honesty though. The way we found bear sign was hitting the edges of the reprod and looking for where the bears had peeled the bark back. I feel like finding a good spot with lots of that sign and then sitting 100 yards or so out of the edge and calling might get you what you are looking for.
-
Yeah, that avatar just looks for trouble.
Thanks for the tip.

Got my info packet in the mail....... starting to get excited!
Trying to decide between my trusty 7mm Mag and my Ruger guide gun in 45-70. It has a 1.5-5X scope because I can't shoot iron sights anymore (I've got retinal sluffing that can't be corrected with glasses and isn't a simple Lasik surgery).
What are the odds of getting a shot at a bear past 200 yards out there?
And....... if anyone wants to PM me any Kapowsin bear info, I'm a mighty appreciative guy. Big thanks to those who've helped so far.
-
I've hunted bear a lot last year on Hancock land and 200 yds just might be a little short. I've seen 5 different bear last year. They ranged from 250 to 400 yards.

Thank you for the input.
That seals the deal for taking the 7mm Mag.

Got my new bear call from Rick this weekend.
Sounds awesome.

This early in the year you wont be able to get up high to glass. So my guess is 200 yard shot or less is more likely. I think usually around July is when enough snow melts up high to make it up to any real elevation.

Never shot a bear in there over 20 yards. Hunt where the bears are comfortable and your not :chuckle: most the people hunting for bears are petrified of them, from what I've learned taking guys in there.

Take both and use whichever one suits the situation imo. If you are hiking some of the thicker stuff drag the 45-70 along. There are a lot of grown in old logging roads to hike down that should show sign of bears or have bears using them as travel corridors. YES! They use those old roads a lot. Had a buddy with multiple trail cam pics of bears hoofing it up and down the grown in roads. In those areas I would say 75-100 yards is max range you will get and most I would say will be within 40-60 yards. If you are setting up on top of a hill to glass cuts and reprod I would keep the 7mm by you in case yogi pops out 200-400 yards away. I don't know what your comfort zone is for shooting but 400 yards isn't too much of a holdover for a fast traveling 7mm bullet. You might see some bears from farther away, 600 yards + but you should either be able to sneak close enough for a shot or if you are like some of the guys on here the longer pokes are in the comfort range. As I said before. Good luck man! I hope to see a picture of you with a big dead bear on here when the season gets going!

For best results be sure to practice while driving that pink prius around, stoplights, parking lots all good practice areas.

Yep.
Definitely going to put some gumbo mudders on the Prius for this hunt.

You should be smiling a TON since you got selected for a spring bear permit! I seriously believe that you are going to kill a bear! I gots faith in you and that pink prius man!
-
Why is that?
-
Because the pink Prius is a killin' machine.
I just go where it tells me to go and good things happen....... except this past year. This past year, it almost turned me Vegan.
But I think the Prius mojo is back.

I gave you all I had. Let me ask my buddy if he would be willing to give a general idea of where he was finding bears regularly on cam. Mind you they were in the Fall season and some probably moved off but it will give you a general area to start in if he gives up the goods.

I'm not going to be picky. I'll probably take the first 450 lb boar that I see.

Buddy won't give up his locals.. he has been trying to get one with his longbow for the past 4 years in there and hasn't been able to close the gap... so he doesn't want to give up the goods lol! Sorry man, I tried. I even offered some good bourbon!

Haven't had a chance to get in there yet. Hopefully Sunday. Anyone know where the current snowline is at?

We don't do bad bourbon anymore lol. Our tastes have outgrown that stuff... we do drink a bottle of Jameson for good measure every now and then but that's about as cheap as we go lol. To be honest man. Like I said, best bet is to just hit the old grown in skidders. They use them as travel corridors and MOST of the people that will be in there looking for bears won't be hiking in anywhere.

I have the tag and didn't even think about snow being an issue. I have about 20 places marked on maps I want to check out, but now I'm worried most will be to high! Better look at the map again and have lower elevation spots picked out as well. I noticed a lot of skunk cabbage when I went in to get my key.
Anyone ever have issues with trees blowing across the road? I normally bring my saw, but didn't know if they freak out if you have to cut a tree out of the road without letting them know.
-
You have gotten lots of hints, however RASBO is right about getting in deep where it is dark and uncomfortable for you but not the bears. He and others on this site helped me a great deal hunting in there and I learned a great deal from him. Get away from everyone, explore and find the spots that are dark that may lead to clearings, good grass, or fresh peals and then use that awesome new call. I have had success there and other places using the techniques I learned from Him and others on this site. Besides getting close to your prey is a rush and a whole new experience if you have not had it yet with a bear. The bologna bikini with a bacon belt for my side arm I think was the key lesson learned for me.

shoot them twice, lol. Had some great times in there, should would have been nice to find the camera
-
No doubt, would have been nice to see what bear porn was on that camera. You remember coming out of there and hearing that tree get nocked down behind us? Good times.....
-
Seen lots of guys "hunting" in there this year. Sign should be easier to find mid May after the young trees start getting new growth.

yes, raised the hair on the back of my neck

Nice.
I was there this morning, but only to buy my access permit.
Absolutely beautiful country...... Prettier than I remember.
I'm looking forward to exploring.
-
I spent some time out there this week.
Didn't see any bears, so I'm assuming there are none......
I forgot how pretty that country is. Glad I get to play around in there a little

Went out this morning found some fresh peels and acouple piles of poop two different roads. But still no sightings yet
-
Anybody else with some new news?
-
Too bad you guys can’t kill this bear around our house, he actually tried to get my Neihbors chickens today in the daylight. I chased him away, don’t mind him being around but don’t f with my egg supply!! Good luck in Hancock and keep at it!
-
They all have heard the Purina bear chow, is free and plentyful, across the north of the river.
-
I’ve seen a truck with bait barrels two Friday’s in a row headed out to the tree farm :sry:

Don’t be sorry, your not the one feeding them.
I feel sorry for the lucky hunters than drew a spring bear take though.
-
They’ve been putting out baits for a long time already. I know of a few I’ve found. All on the bridge gate side that you can’t hunt anyways.
-
There’s way more bears in the bridge gate than on the south side of the river and way more bear damage north of the river. Just goes to show that spring bear hunting reduces tree damage.

Not to derails Dan-o's thread to far but we get just as many bears on camera on the Kapowsin side as the Bridge side. The big problem with that tag is that 150 permits for that small of an area is just to many tags plus they open the escapement gates. All those rigs driving around puts the bears off and they go deep and ugly or cross the river. We see more spring bear hunters in there than we do fall bear hunters and that's OTC. If they would dropped the number to say 30 permits on each side and keep the escapement gates closed for those of us that don't mind walking they would get just as many bears shot, maybe more, and it would be a much more enjoyable hunt.
-
If both sides were open I would still hunt kapowsin
-
If both sides were open I would still hunt kapowsin
Rasbo is that because you see more bears on the Kapowsin side?
-
Yes and I've killed several bears there, and so have friends.there are areas nobody even gets into.. k
-
School me up on Kapowsin Spring bear habits...(new to me). I finally located and walked a nice road yesterday with scat ranging from one week to what I would say was yesterday morning or late the evening before. I have found last years peals in the area, but none from this year yet. He is in a nice basin with water, and not really much pressure above or below. Will he stay in that area for the rest of the season or do they cruise around a lot? Im pretty much limited to hunting Mondays until I get eyes on, and can/will drop leave to spend some more time with him. Would calling say, 100 yards above and below the road I see his sign on be advised? Or just walk the road at morning and evening with good wind? Yesterday was so hot, even in the mountains it was low 80's, and I didn't expect to see much out and about. Did see a coyote between two sets of bear scat, but didn't want to drop him and fear pushing the bear. Any tips in this situation? Current plan is to walk the road morning and evening, and continue to scout new country during the day looking for sign.

I've been up quite a bit but haven't seen any bears. If you've seen for bears you must have a good honey hole. Busting my butt to just see peels and piles of scat. I got drawn for this permit last year and didn't see a bear. I feel there is way more peels around this year. I still have hope it could happen but won't apply again next year for kapowsin. Going to start trying the East side. Good luck to all
-
Anybody check the 500 road??
-
Yea been up the 500. Still haven't seen any bears. I like it in there but nothing yet
-
 no fresh peels?

Yea I've seen some on a couple roads. Mostly over on the 600

It's official: there are no bears in the Kapowsin tree farm.
I spent 6 hours in there this afternoon and not one bear.
I'll be back in Sunday.
-
So when does the rut kick in and should. Predator call start working by now?
-
You can find bears in the reprod, but unless you get lucky with one crossing the road, you're wasting your time. Find sign in areas you can actually hunt them. In the big timber adjacent, or grassy old spurs with quiet tread and long lines of sight. In open timbered creek bottoms, where the prevailing wind is steady, and the water covers your sound. There's lots of bears in there. Someone once told me when I first started hunting in there, if you're not getting wet/poked/stabbed/slipping/sweating, you won't fill this tag.
-
Doing the best I can getting tired of no sightings at least. Might try the predator call next. So bored of sitting and waiting for something to happen. At least there's decent shed hunting.
-
I have been hunting the area for the last two years... I have put a ton of miles on the ground (not easy considering you can drive just about anywhere, so finding places where you won't have someone drive by you while you are walking is a chore), a ton of miles in the rig, a ton of hours in the binos...and still not one sighting... I did get one guy on camera, but he must have just been passing through. I have seen fresh peels, fresh scat, and a freshly eaten remains of a rabbit right next to a pile of scat (easily the same day), but I have yet to see a bear... I have even spent quite a bit of time with calling... still nothing... I spent three days in there this weekend and hunted for 15 hours every day... up high, down low, and in between... I have been within feet of deer and elk, so I know my scent control and stalk are on point... I keep telling myself right place, right time and it will happen... but I am getting weary! What the heck am I missing???
-
Careful with the camera, F&G will think your a baiter, attracting bears during the hunt.

Your missing the bears :chuckle: I’ve only hunted 4 days with my tag but I have seen a bear. Although, by the time I said bear it was in the brush and my buddy didn’t even see it. There’s lots of bears but they are in the thick stuff and you only have a split second to catch them in an opening.
-
I never ever saw 1 bear when I lived in western Washington. I lived near Kapowsin and went into Champion, as it was called then, all the time. Never 1 bear. Lots of elk and deer. I also worked stock piling their rock pits all over Champion and still no bears.
I moved to eastern Washington and started seeing bears. I'd go to eastern Washington if you don't kill one with your tag.. You'd have a better chance I'd think.

I’ve seen a few good size ones , and have pictures of some nice bears in there. All siteings around thick cover and no shots.
Didn’t kill any bear until I started hunting east side.

Your missing the bears :chuckle: I’ve only hunted 4 days with my tag but I have seen a bear. Although, by the time I said bear it was in the brush and my buddy didn’t even see it. There’s lots of bears but they are in the thick stuff and you only have a split second to catch them in an opening.
I see that bear/elk/moose/Sasquatch that my partner misses seeing all the time too :chuckle:
I'm not too far out of the tree farm and I got bear crap out in my pasture the other day. Maybe they all are hiding in my black berry bushes

Another thing you might want to see about is if the timberland owners will tell you at the office where they are having the worst trouble with bears peeling the trees. I knew the gate guard from years ago and he told me to ask. I did and they told me.......... :dunno: :dunno:
-
I tried asking that question at the office Back In 2006 or 2007 I think it was. They just laughed and told me that it was my job to figure out. They did not care to help at all.

I lived there from 1990-2000 is when I was told. It would have to be in the small reprod fir or whatever it is.
Find the security guard who drives around in a pickup.
-
Last time I had the tag they provided a hot spot (heavy damage area) map with the access permit. :dunno:
Just about any stand of reprod 12-18 years old unless its severely overstocked will have peel right now.

They still provide the hot spot maps.

Sorry to hear big guy! At least its something they can fix! Sending as much good karma for you and your daughter as possible man! I'm still waiting to see a pic of you with a dead bear in kapowsin!

Just saw my 5th bear of the season, This time at 25 yards. No shot. These things are so much fun but a pain in my butt! Maybe I’ll have some luck in the fall😔

Got it done in Kapowsin last night! I passed one up this size 2 weeks ago, but was rapidly running out of season. Pulled the trigger on this guy at about 8-10 yards last night. Was a fun hunt, but that tag was definitely harder than I expected to fill! He's not huge, but his coat is in excellent shape.

Congrats

Dan-o, any reports on a dead bear for you or on how the daughter is doing?
