Title: Ruger american ranch rifle.
Post by: jdb on March 17, 2018, 04:32:32 PM: I'm looking at a new rifle for my wife. Thinking about this in either 7.62x39 or .300 blackout. Input?

Post by: Biggerhammer on March 17, 2018, 04:50:28 PM: I would go with the 7.62x39 over the .300 Blk Out. The .300 is about anemic past 200 yards for hunting purposes. I have shot the .300 in several bolt rifles and built them on AR platforms. They are best suited for what they were designed for. Suppressed, sub sonic work.

sure would be a nice after dark gun if suppressed

Post by: milldozer on March 20, 2018, 12:26:54 PM: I have a RAR in .300 BLK and it has been very accurate. I can get .5"-.75" groups at 100 yds with handloads. Also very fun to shoot subsonic/suppressed.

Yeah, no problem, fun guns. Added bonus, you can shoot 125gr/130gr bullet supersonic (2000-2200 fps) also.

*Edit to add, the one I have shot, has a 3-9X Leupold with a CDS reticle. Sighted in dead on at 100 yards with supersonic ammo. Dial up 10 MOA for factory subsonics (200 grain), and dial up 13 MOA for subsonic handloads (220grain nosler ballistic tip).

They are a handy length rifle. Extremely well balanced. If you don't like the original magazines, ruger now make a separate version of the ranch rifle that take AR style mags. *No you can't convert current ones* Triggers are super easy to work on. Stocks are functional but the forends will touch the barrel if you apply any pressure.

That said they are accurate. They handle abuse really well. No problems shooting Subsonic or Supersonic ammo. Personally I'd limit them to 200 yards and under on anything bigger than a coyote.
