Title: Surface Rust in TC Hunter Muzzleloader

Hey guys,

Its been awhile since I have been in the "muzzleloader forum".

Good to be back!

I am an archery hunter that recently was given a TC Hunter muzzleloader by a friend who had it in Nevada for a few seasons. I have the opportunity to use the gun in Utah this fall.

There is some surface rust near the hammer and breech, which makes me wonder if there is rust in the barrel.

I have seen plenty of advice how to prevent rust, but not much on how to remove it.

Any thoughts or pieces of advice on how to remove the rust and how to check the inside of the bore?

I have a traditions muzzle loader with rust in the barrel and I have tried a bunch of different things to get it out and didn’t have any luck. But the gun shoots really well so I’m not to worried about it.

Get one of those tiny flashlights and drop it down the bore gently, if there is rust or corrosion you should be able to see it. If you cant do that, you can again gently drop a shiny empty cartridge case like a 38 special case with the primer end facing out to the muzzle and shine a flashlight down the bore. The reflection should show any thing that would be a problem.

For light surface rust, JB Bore polishing compound on a tight patch and 100 strokes or so would clean most surface rust out and leave it shiny. If there is worse rust than that I'm not sure if it would be worth more effort.  :sry:

Run a lightly oiled patch and see what comes out.  The JB is a great start, get it clean see how if shoots, if it shoots well good for you.  If it doesn't you are out about 100 strokes with JB.

Agree with the JB. 

I have used copper and nylon brushes with JB to work over more stubborn rust.

Thanks! Does it work good on the outside of gun for surface rust?

Don't be afraid to shoot a muzzleloader barrel that's had rust in it.  Clean it out but even if it's pitted it will still shoot.  Maybe not @Sabotloader style but it will shoot  :tup:
