Title: Kelly Hill. Hunting
Post by: Ghost Hunter on March 21, 2018, 04:03:28 PM
It's a days drive just to get there, so I'm getting ready for the long haul.  Dismantled and cleaned the bolt in my light gun (Savage 300WSM) that failed me with a misfire :yike: during deer season.  :bash:  Tested good on a few primed casings.  Got the big guns out today and dialed in at 100 yards in the yard before it started raining.   Might have to find a Sherpa to pack the 340wby :bfg: if I decide to use it.  Barnes 185gr TTSX @ 3276fps good enough?.  7mm will be on board for backup.   Longer range target practice waiting for another sunny day.   All this talk about snow and waiting untill after the middle of May is getting me down.  That's why I'll put the fishing poles and turkey gun in.  It's all good.  I've got a chance at getting my first spring bear and turkey.  Stop by and share :fire.: :brew:

Good luck and safe travels.  That's a long haul.  There is no shortage of turkeys out there.

Stay to the river side of the unit at first.  The bears are always out on those slopes chasing green grass. That area is two weeks ahead of the rest of the unit.  Lots of private so do your homework.

Anybody tell me how good my AT&T coverage will be?  Service not bad in the Okanogan, hoping same in Kelly Hill area.  I've got the onXmaps, if I have reasonable coverage.  AT&T was mostly nonexistent in the SE corner.  If not I'll go back to my paper maps.  Permit came in mail today, so I  guess it's real.   :)  Started loading some Berger 168gr VLD's for the 7mm today, but battery was dead in my calipers.  :bash:

Download the maps of areas you may want to hunt prior to going into those areas. Then you don't need cell coverage.

AT&T works just fine.  There are a few dead zones.

I'm getting a pretty good handle on property boundaries.  Are the private timber lands open?  Hancock, Vaagen, Golden Pond, Inland Empire?

motionX maps. It's for IOS and Android, $1.99 plus tax. It runs off of the satellite GPS and NO cellular data is used. I uses alot of juice, so bring your charger. I use it for desert riding in my RZR.

Yes those are the main timber companies in our area.  Vaagens is the only one of those that doesn't give general permission to their lands.  The rest of them you can hunt.  The Inland Empire Paper lands require a permit which you can buy online.  Keep up the good work and you will do fine.

Good luck neighbor!

Thanks.  Getting antsy.  Won't make opener with Easter for the grandkids, and April Fools for everyone else.  All this talk about bears out it's hard to hold back.  Got the 7mm dialed in with Berger VLD's.   :hunter:
:camp:  :fishin:  Going to be like elk hunting, only relaxing.

I should be on the mountain hunting instead of laying under my truck replacing track bar bushings and anything else it needs.  :'( Since I have a history of breakdowns on hunting trips, I'll do my best in the prevention area.  Truck started the 'death wobble' on me yesterday.  :yike: Don't want that ride with trailer in tow.  Anybody with Kelly Hill reports to share, I'll be rolling soon.

Local weather says 77 right now. Should be making pretty yellow flowers.   :IBCOOL:

This weekend the hills should be alive with opening of fishing and morel hunters

Kind'a what I was thinking.  Let it settle down a little.  Got bushings in the track bar for $50, and drives much better.  Dealer wanted $325 for complete new.  Wouldn't recommend it for everyone, but I think I just paid for my fuel.  Dandelion wine and mushrooms sounds good.

Some of the yellow flowers are looking Sad.   :'( :'(

There is a over abundance of the Alaskan State Bird now.

I also heard that there had been a bear run across in front of a skool bus.

First 2 days.  A lot of miles on truck and a few on the boots.  Yesterday afternoon hit the first scat jackpot 1 1/4 miles from camp.   Maybe a dozen piles.  Been grazing on sides of road.  A lot of thicket off road.  Picked a few ticks before supper.  Decided to sleep in this morning till rain stopped.   Fogged in on high ground now.

Eleven days.  Seen two.  One too far, one too near.  5 mile hike this am.  Heading home to regroup.  That's all I got.

Any local rumors of sightings or kills?  Someone convince me to take another run at it.  I'm saving enough fuel to make it to Toppenish.

That wouldn't be me.  Dodge Ram flatbed pulling a 20' enclosed trailer.  Green canoe on the truck.  Might not take canoe next trip.  Got out ahead of the weekend crowd.

I was up there last Friday-Sunday.  Spotted a possible decent bear on Saturday morning, but only had time to throw up the glass and catch a view of it's rump before it disappeared.  That evening, spotted 2 cubs about 800 yards away.  Heading back up in the AM until Sunday to see what's moving.

going to be a lot of ATV's out this weekend, I've been seeing a bunch heading up to go camping and rip around.  I'd focus on areas well away from all that holiday weekend traffic.  :twocents:

I feel like this is going to be a story of sightings.  On my 13th day of hunting (2nd this trip) I spotted my 3rd bear.  Rained most of the night, and fog hung low this morning.  Waited the fog out by hunting the low ground, and glassing patches thru the fog.  This allowed time for the logging trucks to get on the mountain, load, and head down the rain greased 2 track that I needed to traverse to high ground.  And me on tires the tire shop refused to rotate.  After countless blind corners and meeting only one loaded truck, I made it to the high ground, parked at a trail and headed higher.  The cut I planned for was grown over more than map showed, but was able to glass a number of areas.   :yike:  A bear in an opening.  Looks like a good one with reddish coloring.  Check map, gps, Onx.   :bash:  Maybe I can get to where I can make a shot.  Not to be, afraid the recovery would turn into an international incident.  :bdid:  Anybody got connections with the PM?  Give me a pm if so.  OK, hike back to the truck for my RR call.  Now the wind is blowing straight north.  I'll be back.  Waited for a loaded truck to follow down the hill.

Ended up seeing two more on Friday.  Did my math wrong on range/slope at 600 yards  :bash:  Rangefinder was already set for angle compensation.  Might have been my best chance.  Seeing a few more hunters and cattle have been moved in.  I'm on day six of round 2.  Did see a bobcat yesterday.  And found the best kept secret of fishing holes :yike:   So not a total bust so far.
