The wife and I will be in Kauai from April 5-16. I'm looking for ideas from people who have gone. Any information on hunting, fishing, adventure activities, even beaches or restaurants. If you went and enjoyed it, I'd like to hear about it. I'd really like to make this trip special.

Poipu is a great place to snorkel.
Thirteen miles up from there is a Waimea canyon. The fern Grotto is a cool tourist boat trip, with a lot of history.
We went Poipu and Waimea on our honeymoon and are excited to go back. We didn't have time for the Fern Grotto last time but will have to check it out this time. Thanks!
Did you go on a power boat tour or kayak?

I preferred staying on the south side. For surfing/bodyboarding head to majors bay it's got the best waves on the island (imo), kipu falls is super cool place to swim. You really can't go wrong on that island.
Lots of polo type clubs on the north end with fancier restaurants. Brush up on your pigeon brah!

The south side of the island is more sun, the north has a bit more rain but it's still Hawaii plenty of sun. Cjm stables in poipu has a great breakfast trail ride, I used to be a guide for Jim Miranda the owner of cjm.

Awsome thx for the tips. Did you do any hunting or fishing while you were there? I have been lucky enough to hunt pig on the islands and love that. I have seen Spanish goats while hiking the canyons but have never hunted them.

Great cigars and spiced rum are made on the island. make sure you buy a fifth and at least 1 cigar. I love them. Stop at the taco shack near the end of the road on the north shore. Great Ahi tacos. Rent a Jeep there is no reason to get a sports car and head To the south shore near the radar station. There is a glueton free bakery in Lahue. Booze is cheap. Do one of the irrigation canal floats. Buy a wrist rocket and a bag or 2 of marbles to shoot rouge chickens on your adventures from the walmart.

I second the rum made on Kauai. I have a friend who has family that works at the distillery and it is good stuff!
Wish I was going back to that Island but it is back to Maui this year. Have fun!

You should definitely find some time to do the boat tour that takes you to the Napili Coast. That is a pretty amazing sight.

Taco shack is the last place headed to the park at the north shore. Pretty sure it was at/part of the north shore general store.
They used to send the tabacco out to Nicaragua to be roles. I'm told they do it in house now. Next time I go I'm going to tour the business.
My favorite is the Island Prince Momona, never found thier big gauge Nui Loa for sale. They arnt cheep cigars. If you only buy one plan on spending $15. Low booze tax but pretty high tabacco tax I hear. It's cheaper to purchase a box online than on the Island. This is up in Waimea Canyon, I did not hunt but drove up there to the end its a nice drive. The hunting units were marked on white signs along the road.
Definitely been considering this option. I know there some on the Nepali coast too. I think that might be bow only though.

Kauai coffee company is worth a stop in, or two do the tour it is worth the half hour. Tunnels beach was a great snorkeling spot. There is a great hiking all over Kauai we honestly hiked every day when we were down there, by far my favorite hawaiian island. I did not fish there I have on other islands I just buy fresh fish now the trips have been less than stellar.
I really enjoy Kauai coffee. What do you mean your trips have been less than stellar?

If you turkey hunt, you might want to check their regs to see if the spring season is still open. It opens in early March on the Big Island, not sure about Kauai. Theres actually a big population of Rio Grande turkeys on the islands and pretty slim hunting pressure. Pretty unique hunting experience when your chasing gobblers high up on a volcano. :yike: I'm planning on hunting turkeys myself in Hawaii, hopefully as soon as next year. :tup:
I would love to hunt turkeys, but as far as I know thats not an option on Kauai?

You asked about hunting, yes I was able to go do some hog hunting. Another guide at cjm stables had a few dogs and would take me out on some hunts. It's pretty wild to hunt hogs using nothing but a knife!
Been on a few dog and knife hunts. They are intense for sure. Hoping to go on more! Want to go after some goats and some day axis and mouflon (on lanai)

Also bring a rain jacket!

So I know everyone wants to do saltwater in Hawaii... BUT it's really not a terrific spot for that, plus the reservoirs are stocked with peacock bass. The island might be the only place on earth where you can get peacock, largemouth and smallmouth in the same place. All the reservoirs are private and you have to take a guide, but it's cheap compared to other stuff on the island. We probably caught 20 peacock bass each in 4 hours, and paid maybe $150 a person. The guide we used also did ATV tours. Just make sure they know you want to target only peacock bass.
Waimea canyon has a bunch of goats, hogs too, and is surprisingly steep. Hogs are tougher unless you get a guide or know someone who's got a bait station set up. Assuming you're bowhunting don't know much about rifle hunting there. Bow you can do pretty much all the time.

My wife and I have had a time share on the island for 18 years now. It's not an every year thing but we've been there 8 times I think. Eat at The Beach House just west of Poipu and order anything that ends with "in beurre blanc sauce. And also have the Ahi tuna roll as an appetizer. Best eats on the island. Simply unbelievable. Make reservation now. Take a snorkeling tour out to the Na pali coast, that is very cool. I would not suggest the Mexican restaurant on the second floor of the little strip mall near the cruise ship dock. Both my wife and I got sick from their food. A kayak trip up the Wailua (sp?) river on the north side of the island was pretty cool too. We went through an outfitter and they provided lunch up near some falls. The canyon is worth the trip. On the north side, go to Hanalei, fantastic hiking along the water there. Then eat at Kalypsos in town. They have the best fish sandwich on the island IMO.

It was in Koloa, I believe the company was Kauai ATV. I'd call them they just have a guy on call, there's a reservoir close to Koloa that he'll take you to with a pontoon boat and a smaller aluminum docked there. Pretty informal deal, and the Kauai ATV place didn't even really market the service, we had to ask around until we got directed to them.

Fished with Kai Bear charters and caught Dorado. Zip lines at the Princeville ranch were a kick in the but. Its been a few years.
Did the zip line at Princeville Ranch with the wife. I can't believe I got her to go because she is scared of heights. lol Lot's of fun!

Was there for my honeymoon almost 3 years ago and did a fishing charter with Captain Don's adventures out of Lihue. Had a blast and caught some cool fish. I'll be back on Kauai next weekend for another week long stay as well. Looking at maybe doing a hog hunt or trying to find the place that had mentioned peacock bass?? :tup:

Many of the things listed in the book are secrets among the locals. It's the best $16 you can spend to get the most out of your visit. I have bought one for each of the Hawaiian islands we have been to, and I still wouldn't go without it on our next trip.
That is a great tip and your absolutely right. We bought the book before we went there the first time on our honeymoon and it has served us well. It definitely is the #1 book used on the Island.

If you hike the Napali Coast game trails in the predawn hours, with an early morning fog and looking for a little beach to photograph at sunrise, bring a GPS. I figured as long as I kept going down and towards the sound of the ocean, I would be in good shape. Wrong! I made a complete circle over the course of 45 minutes. I have never been turned around in the woods like I was on that hike. Once it got light enough to see, it wasn't much trouble.
I hear ya. It's easy to get turned around there at times depending on were you are. I took a GPS with me a couple of years ago. I was hunting with a group of locals and wanted to have it in case we got separated. Hiking in the thick jungle it would not acquire satellites so I just made sure I kept up. lol

We have stayed on the beach and up in the mountains. I think I like the mountains better because we spend all day at the beach and the beach is never far from were we are staying. Also, it seems like you can get more for your dollar in the hills because most people want to stay on the beach.
As far as rental cars, we have rented from the major chains at the airport and have also gone with the small private vehicle rentals. We have found better deals through the privates but it's always kind of sketchy. I like to have reservation in hand.
