I would guess any reputable shop would say the same thing, not worth their license and potential fines. Also, if they would be willing to break the law for you for money, I would be suspect of their work, because I doubt there would be any warranty and probably a cash only deal...
Think about it, someone walks in and asks you to break the law for them, what would YOUR answer be?
Probably have to do it yourself.

Jackelope, yes its a 6.4, my budget will be about 10 grand give or take. What I was looking to do was the deletes, a new full exhaust, intercooler, fuel system, and whatever the mechanic recommended for reliability and a little better mileage. I really appreciate the help.

I understand legality issue and really dont like the fact to make my truck more reliable and better for using like its meant to be used its "illegal" because politicians say so. If i was more mechanically inclined towards diesels I would do it myself but I know my limits.

No offense, but just because you don't think it's right or wrong doesn't change the fact that the shop is at risk of huge fines or more if they're caught doing any emissions modifications.

My truck came from Montana where the delete was done but I guess it's legal for a dealer in Washington to sell a vehicle like that. That being said maybe take it out of state and have it done. Check with Spartan Tuners also. From what I understand the tuner can really do a lot for a diesel, mileage and horsepower and they run about $1500.00.
Not legal to sell either. Someone wasn't paying attention.
And the law is federal, not state.

Like others said shops will not do the work so it is either have a buddy do it or do it yourself but if you do your research and take your time it is easy.

I think I will try out the bulletproof diesel egr amd oil cooler set up to see how they work out. That way no broken laws, even if they are bs.
If you're going to tune it and bump the turbo boost, you might consider ARP head studs. Or plan on doing them later if a head gasket blows. It's a fair amount additional labor to do and the stud kit is like $600-ish.

I have been thinking of doing the same thing to my 2012 6.7 powerstoke now that the warranty is finally over. I am getting tired of the "cleaning exhaust" indicator coming on. I have already had the egr cooler replaced and I only have 65,000 miles on it. Everything is bolt on, so it seems pretty straight forward for a guy to do himself that is mechanically inclined. Just need to figure out what programmer tongo with. I will say that the resale worries me if I go that route though.
If it truly is all bolt-on, no reason a person couldn't just box up the take off parts and store them until time to sell, then reinstall?
Granted it would be a of pain to redo the undo, but shouldn't hurt resale value then as it would be back to stock configuration.
Of course, that is a D.Y.I. job and not paying a shop...

Do it yourself, I did mine on my 6.7 with my buddy in a weekend, it wasn’t that bad. YouTube is your friend!It is easy, ordered my new exhaust from alligator performance in Idaho, had it to my house in 3 days. with the edge chip and no muffler or cat, my mileage went up a lot! love it and it's not that much louder, no smoke either off my duramax. Should have done this years ago! The exhaust was only about 300 bucks. Since this pic my mileage has gone up to 17.6, was 11.5 ish.

I literally had my truck at the dealership for a month and a half the final time. Cost me 1500 bucks they slapped a new air system in it and told me it was good to go. Didn’t even get home and I was in limp mode again. Come to find out it was a factory recalled sensor 😡. I found a mechanic that a bunch of my buddies have used and took it to him at his house as a side project. I bought all the parts and he did all the work for 500$. I would suggest finding a situation like that because any shop I contacted wanted 1000-1500$ for labor. Truck is awesome now! 5 mpg better fuel economy and a ton more power. Truck runs and feels great. Should have seen the black chunky crap fly out the exhaust when we first started it after work was completed. I am a firm believer that the exhaust systems on these trucks these days kill the vehicle! I will always delete from now on, it’s a night and day difference on the way these trucks perform. Of course I kept all parts just in case I have to convert back for some dumb reason :chuckle::yeah: kept my old parts as well. Another thing my edge fixed, my Speedo now reads the correct speed I’m driving. With my 35’s I was always going faster than Speedo said. And I agree, from now on every truck I buy will get this exhaust system! Except I can’t afford-or better yet- won’t spend 80,000 on a new truck so I’ll probably drive this till the wheels fall off!

Yep tuner fixed my speedometer as well. And yes I agree on the brand new truck cost. I will let someone else take the brand new cost hit and buy used when I have to. My truck just turned 72000 miles so will be keeping it for awhile.
