Title: Adjustable vs fixed sight
Post by: nwhunter on April 07, 2018, 09:59:24 PM
I got a new bow and need to buy a sight for it and am leaning towards an adjustable sight system.. I like the idea of a two or three pin setup for the typical 30-50 yard shots but also the capability of adjusting for longer range shots. I have had fixed pin sights forever from 5-7 pins but less clutter seems appealing especially with older eyes.. I have been looking at spott hogg, montana gold and trophy ridge as they seem to be the top brands with slide systems. They definitely aren't cheap.. Before I spend the money I would like to hear some input..
Thanks

I have the MGB Ascent three pin. Love it and never looked back. Have a 20,30, and 40 pin. After that I use the dial.

HHA is another big name in the sliding sight world. I love my single pins, no clutter and a better sight picture. I have a Spot Hogg fast Eddie and a Truglo range rover both are great. If I was doing it over I would get the dual pin fast Eddie but it came out after I already bought a single. Changing from a five pin I tightened group up so much I fear damaging my arrows.

I switched two years back from a 5 pin to a Spot Hogg - Tommy Hog with single post and two pins.  I really like it.  I don't think you can really go wrong with any of the larger named manufacturers.  In my opinion Spot Hogg makes some bomb proof stuff and I silly enough to pay that kind of money for good gear.  Best of luck in your search.

I think a lot of it depends on the style of hunting you do.  Tree stand guys usually have more time to take shots.  For me, between the elk and deer I have killed with my bow, I dont think I ever had time to adjust a sight before taking a shot.  Seems like they are all, now or never shots.

I agree that's why the single pin adjustable never appealed to me but with the 2 or 3 pin adjustable it seems like you get the best of both worlds. Pins are set for your normal 30-50 yard shots where things can happen in a hurry and are my most common shots . For  a longer shot option where typically you need to take more time anyhow you can take a few seconds and dial it up. Not everyone likes the idea and I may not either after I spend the money  :chuckle:

I like my spot Hogg fast Eddie “double” pin. It has a double pointer on the yardage wheel too. Typically I have it set for 30 yards. Then  I have my second pin for 40. Anything further I will dial.

Above all my accuracy has improved going this route. Everything has pros and cons. But the single pin has greatly improved the accuracy of my shot at all distances.

I shoot single pin and just found that setting my pin at 28yards gives me the widest range of being able to put the pin center and hit the vitals. I really like having 1 pin rather then a bunch in front of me......then again I hunt also with a recurve with no sights so to each their own.

I just ordered a trophy taker option 4. Haven’t received it yet but I have high hopes. I like the ability to be able to flip open my fixed pins and only use my slider. We’ll see how it goes.

Works great, they're solid and very adjustable. I got a 6 pin with the oval housing for practicing long distance at the range, but I hunt with it as 5 pin. I just move the floating pin over a fixed pin so it looks like there's only 5. Anything over 60 I'd need enough time to dial anyway to be comfortable taking the shot and anything inside 60 having 5 pins is more than enough for me to sort through. It's nice knowing my most used pins for hunting never move but also having a pin I can dial for way out there.

I would think it depends a lot on what bow you shoot and what you see as your limits for shots. My bow shoots about 280 FPS, so not screaming fast, and there's an almost 12" drop from 20-30 yards. If you're shooting a bow with a lot faster speed and your outside limit is 50 yards, a single pin set at 30 might be the way to go. If your outside range is 100 yards, you're going to want multiple pins. I have a 5-pin Gold Rush and love it at the range. But in the woods, there's a lot of thinking when it's shot time and making sure you have the correct pin for the distance.

I will be running a Spot Hogg Fast Eddie 3 Pin; 1st pin 20 yard, 2nd pin 50 yard trick pin good 23-46 yards, 3rd pin 60 and dial the rest of the way.

I switched to single pin adjustable sight last year and I like it. I keep it at 30 when hunting and practice at different distances with it at 30 so I have a good idea of how to compensate if the need arises. Killed a bull last year that I called in but was able to range a spot first, adjust pin and center punch him.

I like the more open site window without all those pins. Takes the guess work out and lets me focus on smooth draw and consistent anchor  :twocents:

I have the same sight and agree that getting the right pin if you aren't on 1 or 5 takes some mental focus.  I'm pretty sure that whatever route I go I'll be wishing I had the other one if I am fortunate to draw on an animal this year.  As of right now, I don't have any business shooting beyond 60 yards, so the 5-pin is probably the best solution.

What’s a trick pin?

Like Vande, I switched to a single pin. My eyes are getting older but I shoot a 70# bow, so I set my pin to 30 yds and never have to move my aiming point out to 30. I can still hit the vitals out to 40 without moving the pin. If you get a longer shot you normally have the time to range it. Great view as well.

I'm using Montana gold 5 pin with micro adjust. 5 pin because I'm shooting heavy arrows, doubt I'll use the dial for hunting, but will for target shooting.  I don't think I can get too far past 100 yards with these FMJ arrows and brass inserts before I'm hitting the bottom of the sight housing  :chuckle:

So how do you like the option 4?? I almost got a used one awhile back. I have on a react 5 pin but wouldn’t mind having the “option” to dial in longer ranges...
