Title: New Bow
Post by: flemdogg on April 12, 2018, 12:49:39 PM: Just picked up an almost brand new Hoyt Carbon Defiant. Previous owner sent less than 30 arrows downrange with it. This is my first bow and was looking for some advice on getting it setup right for me. It has sights, rest, quiver, and all. I'm planning on having a proshop look it over and get me on the right path, but other than that does anyone have any tips or tricks for a guy new to archery?

Post by: Crunchy on April 12, 2018, 12:59:49 PM: Get some arrows, paper tuned, and get to shooting. I would make sure the peep is lined up at full draw, if not the shop can probably add or take a twist out of the string to fix that. But with only 30 arrows shot out of it so far, it might be better to wait until you get a couple hundred shot so the string settles.

Don't force a shot if you can't get the pin to sit where you want let down and redraw. Some of the best things to do is draw aim hold tell your not floating the pin on a dot let down rest a sec redraw float the pin on the dot let down etc.

Watch youtube videos on correct shooting form or get an experienced archer to teach you. Demontangs advice is solid about learning good habits right away.

Draw is 1 inch too long, draw weight is fine, but limbs are out to their max. Would be better to just step down in limb size and be at the top of the range. New archer, didn't know.

I know hoyt has cams that would need swapped for draw length ranges. Don't over complicate it if you don't have to. It's a pretty simple thing to find cams and or mods.

I will advise you make sure the arrows you have are the correct spine for your draw weight now that you have lowered it and draw length. If you need to get a different spine or shorter I highly recommend The Vital Impact arrows sold by Sportsman's Warehouse. They are a good GT brand arrow relabeled for sportsmans, and they are 1/2 the price of the Equal GT label model. Sportsmans will also cut them to length and glue inserts for you, all for $37/6arrows (Inserts and nocks included) They are a great shooting arrow at a super budget price, they are tough too, I put one clean thru my a black mear's chest and offside leg and the arrow was unscathed.

I know many guys get very deep into highest level arrows ($100shafts, custom vanes, inserts and nocks), and they can probably tell a difference gained with top tier gear. But starting out, the Vital Impacts will be perfect, and even after 3years of shooting I have not found a reason to spend 3x the money for high end arrows, they shoot straighter than I do! And if I break one I don't feel my wallet shrivel in my pocket.

Unfortunately that's where Hoyt gets you on these bows. You have to change everything to go from a #3 cam to a #2 cam, limbs, strings and cams.
