I'm goint to let you vote up to 3 times here. What I want to know is what caliber do you or your friends actually use for elk? If your partners are members here don't vote for them unless they never come around. I don't want to know what the "best" is. I just want to know what calibers are used in your elk camp.
If you guys bow hunt or Muzzy hunt then please vote for the caliber you would use. Thanks.
If I forgot a common caliber let me know.
-
.54 - it's not on your list.
-
Sorry. Not muzzy's this time. :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
If i had to hunt with a rifle it would be .300 win mag.
Brandon
-
300wsm or a 50 cal.
-
Lovetohunt,
vote if you didn't then.
-

OK – 35 Whelen, I’ve only killed paper with it but if I ever get a modern elk tag I’m taking that one.
-
Don't believe in rifles for elk but if I pulled up lame it would have to be .300 Win Mag or 30-06.
-
7mm Weatherby!
-
300 win mag.
-
Hmm, took Elk with 32 Winchester Special, 30-06 and now have both 300WM and 35 Whelen Ackley Improved (Whackley) to do it with.
-
35 Whelen Ackley Improved (Whackley)
That would be a very cool cartridge to have.

In the custom 700 that its in...tis a whacker on the shoulder...the rifle is light with a smaller, scout mounted scope so nice to carry..not so fun to shoot from the bench, esp with 225, 235 and 250 grain bullets.
-
OK,where is the 264 Win Mag?
-
How'd you miss it? :chuckle:
-
OK,now I want to change my vote!!!.................. :chuckle:
-
why no .375 HH?
-
why no .375 HH?
Nice!!!
-
7mm Weatherby!
very nice
-
300 Wthby Mag for me. It's pretty much all I shoot for big game.
-
A rifle for Elk? What's up with that? :archer: :chuckle:
-
270 140 accubond
-
125 grain Magnus Stinger ;)
-
Your ruining my scientific study. :ACRY:
-
sorry, I jsut felt left out of the polls. Want me to remove myself
-
:ACRY: No just playin. I'm proving a point. I'm having an arguement with a guy who claims the ONLY caliber that has killed more elk than a 270 win is a 338 win mag. I call bull :crap:
So you guys voting for muzzy's or archery don't help much.
-
hate to bust your bubble, but I would go out on a limb and say the 30-30 may have killed more. ;)
-
270 and 300 rum are my two choices when not hunting with the .54
-
Im same as rasbo. 270 140gr accubonds.
-

That may be, but all I'm saying is that there's no way that the ONLY caliber to kill more elk than the 270 is the 338. What about the 06, 30-30, 300 winny, the 7 mag. 270 is the only one? No way.
Damn 30-30 should be on there.

Indeed. heck, 32 Winchester Special too

338 Remington Ultra Mag?
300 Remington Short Action Ultra Mag?
-
300 win mag and 125 magnus broadheads are my favorites
-
Hey gutpile i bet the 30-06 has killed more elk than any other round out there... Just my opinion but it has been around pretty long...
-
2 votes for 125 Magnus. :chuckle:

My thoughts too. I asked him "what about the 30-06?"
-
300 Remington Short Action Ultra Mag?
300 other mag- ultra/30-378/ etc
338 Remington Ultra Mag?
Not to common. Left it out on purpose.
-
Very poor showing for the .35 calibers, no .35 Remington, .356 Win, .358 Win, or .358 Norma mag?

Hmmm maybe because your average elk hunter has never even heard of some of them. In other words these calibers don't exactly fly off of the shelves.
Guys please, this wasn't meant to be where's this cartridge, where's that cartridge. I was doing the poll and wanted common calibers. It was to prove a point that the 300 winny and the 7mm mag are more common than the 338 win mag or the 270.
If anybody wants to start another poll please do.
-
Im amazed at how many 270 shooters are out there......
-
I knew there'd be a few but I figured the 7mm, the 300 win. and the 30-06 would be at the top.
-
I also want to know who in their right mine chooses 30-30 to go elk hunting?!?! I mean dnt get me wrong I love deer hunting wiht my 30-30 but elk are tough and have pretty thick hides Ive watched them stumble around for awhile after be smoked with a 7mm rem mag.....
I know Im gonna get hated and somebodys gonna say it kills em too......

Well I can't vote.
While it is not on the list I use a .338 RUM first with a .300 RSAUM as a backup. Sorry to be in the "uncommon category." :hello:
-
custom 338-378
-
Geez guys... 30-06 180 grains entire hunting life. She works.

I bet the old 30-40 krag has killed its fair share of elk too.
-

-
.338 WIN MAG, FIRST GUN I BOUGHT BRAND NEW :hunter:
-
300 win mag.
-
.338 Win Mag :)
-
270 WSM, kid uses an 30-06.
-
30-06 good all around gun
-
I claim to be a bow hunter, but drew a second elk tag and shot this one with my Rem 7 mag with a 160 NP. 300 yard shot, broke rib going in and out, and stuck just under the hide on the far side. Not much blood trail at all.
-
.338 Win Mag.
250 Grain bullet for most kills. There was a few years that I used 185 grain Barns X, then later switched back to the 250 Grain. The 185 Barns X seldom had an exit hole but I recovered a lot of bullets just inside the skin on the other side. They always performed flawlessly as far as weight retention. 250 Grain Nosler Partition or Bonded Core always have had an exit hole so I don't get to recover them. 250 Grain Sierra Boat Tails have had an exit hole about 50% of the time. They typically break up when they hit bone but they do a lot of damage even if they don't exit. I have also used the 250 Grain Hornady Interlock and they perform about like the Sierra Boat Tails.
I have also taken elk with my .44 Mag Ruger SRH. 317 Grain hard cast gas checked bullet.
My .338 Win is an early model Ruger Mark II. Last year I upgraded the old boat paddle stock to a free floated walnut stock.
My experience with elk is "Use Enough Gun" :-)
