Post by: 3nails on April 15, 2018, 02:20:20 PM
Should be out this week. I'm in for deer/elk combo but chose elk refund if I don't draw the special permit.

Talked to a guy in licensing on Friday he said draw will start on Wednesday the 18th and should be posted by Friday the 20th.  On another note, you have to create a new account in order to lookup your results online.  I was having difficulty getting my confirmation email and he said that he had received many calls from people with the same internet/email service as me, so you might want to get your account setup before Friday if your internet provider rhymes with bomblast, lol.

I got the same thing. I looked at what tags/licenses were being held and said nr deer and nr elk plus the fishing etc etc. I’m assuming by that, that I meant I drew combo

Mine is kinda weird also. It says I didn’t draw. But before I figured out how to sign in on there new system I went through the purchase tags page and signed in with my als# and it said I could purchase the elk or deer b tags. Thought that was kinda weird if I didn’t draw. So at first I thought I had drawn.

Up until this year it seemed that everyone that put in for the Big Game Combo drew a licence.  I understand that this year is the first year that there were more applicants than tags.  But it shocks me that so many of us on the forum didn't draw.  I know the deer only tags have been harder to get for a few years now but the Combo tags have been close to 100% in years past.  it just seems weird to me that so many people didn't draw this year on the combo tag.  I could understand if 10% didn't draw due to the increase but it seems that close to 50% of the posts on here are un-successful combo's.  Montana must have had a massive increase in applicants for these licenses this year.
Title: Re: Montana Draw Results
Post by: big wood on April 24, 2018, 05:23:29 AM
I think the first year I went over was 1987, I was 17. I believe there were only 2200 non resident deer tags and 11000 combos. because only 2200 deer tags there was a 10- 20 % chance of getting a deer tag and 90-100% chance of getting a combo. I always got the combo. then the combos started getting about 50% chance of drawing so they raised the price from 375 to 425. that dropped the numbers applying. then again there were more applicants than tags so they rasied it to 475. then 625 then 675 then 875 then 1000. so next year or soon, I bet there will be another increasearound 30 years I have not gotten drawn 2 times. Also in the beginning a bear tag was included at the 375.00 price. sorry alot of you guys never drew, I have 13 points for special tags and like wa. I never drew a special tag but did draw a combo. good luck

I have been applying about the same length of time. Only special permit I ever drew was a cow tag. I now only apply for trophy areas so my chance of drawing is pretty slim even with all the points

Just talked to one of my partners.  He didn't draw the combo license.  Funny, I called the draw hotline to talk to someone about my issue and in their recording, it states that the left over combo licenses will go on sale May 7th.  How can there be any left overs if my partner didn't draw?  Man I hope that I get someone who knows what is going on.  Been on hold for 45 minutes now

Could be an elk combo.  That was the only leftover combo last year.

There are 3 different combos:

Deer elk combo

Title: Re: Montana Draw Results
Post by: bigfish51 on April 24, 2018, 10:31:01 AM
OK, so a little clarification.  My partners were "not successful" for the combo deer/elk license.  My issue is that I show "not successful" for the combo deer/elk license, but then "successful" for the deer/elk license (released) and then no mention of my LE permits.  When we do the application, there is a question asked if we are unsuccessful in drawing, do you wish to keep your combo license or do you want to turn your combo back in for an automatic refund.  This occurs right after the permit drawing and then there is a left over combo drawing.  That is how my information shows that I was then successful on the deer/elk combo.  Confusing, but makes sense.

Combo has nothing to do with deer and elk.  There is no deer elk combo.  If you want deer and elk you put in for the big game combo.  Like you said the combo is meant to cover all the different licences you get when you draw.  Such as a fishing licences and upland game licences along with your hunting licences and tags.

Successful Deer Combo Draw for me, however, landowner who had set me up with access to hunt his land South of Missoula just called me and shared the unfortunate news that he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, and has to sell his home and land and move closer to a treatment center. Very sad to hear. Very nice elderly man who wanted to help out an out of state guy! So, I am going to send in the paper work to Helena division for refund. I am pretty bummed that out of state refunds are only 80%...Kind of screwed up in my opinion, especially with the fact that they get to sell my tag to someone else.  Any chance you guys know about some sort of unwritten way that I can transfer my tag into your name, and I don't loose out on the 20%. I'd be willing to sell it you for cost without taxes/fees. If you have a place to go, I would rather have someone use it then it go to the State.

Sad deal on both sides and I am almost certain you can't transfer a tag. My question is why not try and hunt some public land since you have already paid for the tags and were ready to make the trip?

I guess I really haven't dedicated a lot of map planning time; To get to know public land areas.  I had put "my bait" out for private land usage, and "got bit", so I did not make a plan B. I guess I could scrounge up some Onx Maps, online MDFW game area maps and see what I can find. Also, I have no hunting partner, so the idea of me going into a new place and burning around for 5 to 7 days seems questionable. I guess I should just put on my big boy pants and "cowboy" up. lol

I do have a plan B, Fishing trip option. I do have time to pull the trigger on that. So I need to make up my mind.

Out in eastern Montana there are so many deer you almost can't go wrong. Throw a dart at a map and find some public ground in the general area, odds are there will be some deer on it. That being said winterkill is going to be an issue out that way this year so that is another factor to consider

Drawn for deer. Put in for antelope as well. 7500 speed goat tags, odds seem good.
From what I'm hearing there may not even be 7500 antelope left in region 7 by the time season rolls around. Herd estimates after 2010-2011 winter were around 9000 animals in region 7 and I've heard this winter was far harsher and they went into it with less animals to begin with. Doesn't sound too promising. I've pivoted off of region 7 antelope and I'll be putting in for wyoming instead

If this winter out there was as harsh as in the early 2000's (don't remember exact year) the antelope will have all moved east into South Dakota.  You can drive between Alzada and Belle Fourche and see thousands, literally.  2003 or 2004 was the last time I antelope hunted in unit 7.  The deer never seemed to be affected all that much from the winters.  I've hunted that unit for 30 years.

Just find large tracts of  land . The deer are there.   .

I know several people who don't have theirs yet either.  One of which was one my party application.  I would wait another week or so.

You are right, their website says wait until the end of the month to get tags before calling. Whew!

I thought I was drawing in Utah so I didn't apply in Montana, now I know I didn't draw Utah and we have a ranch leased with absolutely huge bulls in Montana. My guide was just out there and counted over 80 bulls with branching antlers, some already have 5 points on a side. I signed up for for the returns but don't know how many people are on the list ahead of me. There probably isn't a way, but if there was a way to tell them you have a guy who wants your tag I'd give you the 20% your losing if I could get your tag. I suspect it's not possible but it might be worth asking?

My group (5 guys) got drawn for deer. Headed over November 10-18 to Jordan area, or Broadus, or anything else that looks decent on OnX...

I drew one for the unit I’ll be in. Only 50 of them available. I’m curious on what the statistics were for draw odds. I couldn’t find them in last years information the unit wasn’t listed
