SB 5127, as written, shouldn't be allowed to come out of the House committee it is in right now. Our representatives need to hear that message ASAP! There is less than two weeks to kill the bill, or to get it revised so as to retain the commission's regulatory authority.

The reason is this: SB 5127 would make the commission nothing more than an advisory committee, and thereby give the FISH (& wildlife) Department total authority to set the hunting seasons. The commission has been fair to hunters over the twenty-five years since Referendum 45 first gave it regulatory authority. If the commission process that we have now is obolished hunting will suffer. It isn't right to scrub the only safeguard hunters have just to appease the commercial fishing lobby. Commercial fishing interests are behind the bill. Nothing against them, but they don't have hunters' best interests at heart on this one.

letting any ammendments creep into this bill, will not make it better.  The only reason fishing is worse than ever in this state, is because the commission WAS stacked with commercial fishing interests.  Gregoire gave sportsmen more representation.  I can tell you for certain, that science and conservation is going to be the basis for the fish and wildlife commission, because groups like Coastal Conservation Association are big enough to get two candidates for governor to put out position papers in the last election.  Closed door meetings-gone-overharvest-gone-gillnets?  Look at the CCA record and tell me they cant.  And read who is out front on selective harvest.

If you undermine science and conservation, by changing the commisison, forget about selective harvest or hatchery reform, or improvements to puget sound fishing.
