You talked me into it.  Put in for moose for the 1st time.  Figure odds are better than WA with 19 points.

It’s all about Lady Luck looks like most sheep odds are at
.75%. Moose is all over the board depending on what unit. And goats a whopping 2% draw  odds.

First time putting in for Moose for me this year, draw odds may be better, but it sure makes the old credit card smoke when a guy hits send!

I'm skipping the sheep draw for the 1st time in about 8 yrs. figure I need to try and turn my luck around. Tags I've put in for have been anywhere from 10-20% resident odds and lightning hasn't struck yet

It was May 18th last year, though the regs say by June 10th.  I know they have the new admin system this year, so may take longer.

it will be June. I love seeing the non rez guys applying for the OIL permits. hope you guys are paying attention to the tag numbers. some of those draws are straight donation form you. see it every year in the draw odds X amount of non rez applications = zero drawn  :chuckle:

I'll be doing that in a few years. It's a game of 10% of the total tags. Where I'd like to go hunt Mt. goats there's only one tag, so a non resident only has a shot at getting it maybe every 10 years or so. After I draw my elk tag for in there I'll start putting in for the OIL tags. I'd rather donate to your state than hunt here in WA anyway.

do you know how they run the draw? If there’s an app there it has the same chance as any other app, until the 10% nonres max is hit. Even with the 10% limit odds are still better in Idaho as a nonres than in wa.  :twocents:
Title: Re: Idaho OIL
Post by: BULLBLASTER on May 01, 2018, 12:03:35 PM
I guess I will clarify.

Do they draw for specific hunts in an order? Or do they randomly draw apps and then see if the choice is open?

Title: Re: Idaho OIL
Post by: Branden on May 01, 2018, 12:17:10 PM
They don’t draw hunts they draw names. That is why non res can draw the only unit 11 sheep tag. I believe last year a non res did draw it.

Non res can draw up to 10% of tags for that species and unit. But in the case of oil tags where there are only 1-2 tags per unit then they allow non res to draw the only tag in a unit, or 1 of the 5 tags in a unit until they fill their up to 10% quota. They can only draw 1 tag per unit though unless there are 20+ tags in a unit. Otherwise there would be zero point for a non res to apply for goats or sheep if it was 10% per unit since most units only have a few tags.

great explanation I never understood that and wondered how non res could even draw the sheep and goat tags with less than 10. Not that that information will help me at all  :chuckle:

Based on your response you don't understand how the draw works in Idaho LG.  See Brandens description.

If you understand the system, why are you calling it a donation?  Because the odds are low?

Just thumb through the draw odds. The non rez average for drawing is literally 0% (that’s with the 6 non rez guys that drew a sheep tag last year) You actually have a better chance of drawing a sheep tag with the point system in Washington as a resident

But they all have a chance, the odds are low, but its not a "donation".  Its a chance at a sheep tag for any non-resident that applies for any of the sheep units...including the highly coveted Unit 11 tag.

Idaho sheep odds in 2017: 9 tags for 1,722 NR applicants

Washington Sheep: 17 tags for 12,254 applicants.

Maybe if you have 15+ points your odds are equal or slightly better...maybe. For anyone in Washington with less than about 2 decades of points right now, your odds are higher in Idaho as a NR.

I will gladly donate 2100 dollars to the state of Idaho when I draw my goat tag 👍 if not draw there’s a refund check in the mail.

Yes and no. If you've already made the commitment that you're going to hunt an Idaho OTC tag and you have money enough for the OIL tag, you're only out the price of the application fee each year. Yeah, you have to front the cost of the tag when you apply but if you don't draw it they refund you the money. Considering that I put in for deer, elk, and antelope each year and would only be able to put in for the OIL tag instead of those, it becomes more of a wash financially.

Spring Bear was 7 days later this year and Turkey was 20 days later than in 2017.

With the new admin system, published post by date of June 10, I'd bank on at least another 2-3 week wait.

But, I also wouldn't mind being proven wrong too...

wow Idaho  actually has controlled turkey tags? wth you can shoot 5 where I live usually with one shot :chuckle: Do we really need a limited entry turkey hunt :dunno: Must be managing for really monster birds ha ha. I don't even know why we have a controlled bear hunt but turkeys? I guess some guys are addicted to the draw.  It will be first week of june for results

the only one am aware of is the unit just south of me (so basically meridian)  if it wasn't controlled the Boise river green belt would be a war zone in April and all the birds would be gone in a week since you can basically shoot them form the shoulder of state street. only reason I could ever figure on the controlled turkey.

There is also some controlled turkey hunts over on the snake river in eastern Idaho, I think it is a newer growing population of birds over there, as far as unit 38 there are a lot of birds but it would be like unit 39 deer hunting if it weren't controlled. As far as the controlled bear hunts in unit 22,31,32, and 32a those again have to do with relative ease of access from Boise and the fact that that country is so open the bears wouldn't stand a chance if it weren't controlled

And I would just hope that they release results by June 10th like they say, bear and turkey results weren't just 7 and 20 days past when they are usually released they were 7 and 20 days past the results deadline published by IDFG. And IDFG didn't even do a press release or anything. Just kept everybody in the dark and wouldn't tell anybody when results would be available. If I weren't an Idaho resident I would be done with IDFG after that incident but it's too much value for me to pass up

I know the reasons they have the bear tag I don’t get why people fall all over each other trying to draw them when a ton of otc tags are excellent and you could fill 2 tags without too much effort. I have been told it’s an excellent hunt but so are a bunch of otc 2 bear areas. If I lived right in the unit or very close I would put in otherwise I will just buy a tag and shoot one in my local area. people putting in for turkey tags other than locals living right in the unit is just ridiculous with all the turkeys we have. It’s just something I don’t personally get but I am starting to believe you could have a draw for anything and a bunch of hunters would jump on it simply because they are addicted to the draw itself and not even considering the hunting opportunity. Either way it doesn’t matter and has no impact on me so I guess I don’t really care. To each his own I just commented because as I said I don’t really get it
Back to topic I think we will have results first week of June. If we don’t I am not going to worry about that either idfg has done more for opportunity for the average hunters than any other state so if they are late on results I don’t care. I will get my goat tag either way wether first part of June or July    :chuckle:

Dear sportsmen of Idaho, a few years ago Senator Brackett introduced a bill making the F&G change to a different system for the draws, At this point they are later than they have ever been for the OIL tags, the bear tags had issues as well. So instead of being upset with IDF&G please make sure you show your appreciation to Sen Bert Brackett Home (208) 857-2217

For those of you wanting transparency in the draws that did not understand them in the first place, make sure you call and support this cluster :)

BTW this was sold as a $120,000 and will cost the F&G 1.2 mil to have this mess.

DNRY!!

Saw they extended the application for Deer and Elk to today after the site crashed. Hoping they actually post the OIL's by the 10th!

I have no faith.  :)

Starting to get worried about getting my refund back.  (Well hopefully I don't have to deal with that problem as I'll draw my tag.)

Anyone else noticed that they have yet to publish the 2018 OIL and bear draw odds also? This probably is due thanks to the new vendor also.  :dunno: In years past the draw odds were released at the same time as the draw results. Not a huge deal, but it would be nice to see what the odds were and who ended up with my tag.  :chuckle:

For those that were unsuccessful in the drawing, have you received a refund to your card yet? I am currently still waiting to receive mine.

I have not and was just asking my wife about it last night.  I paid for myself and a buddy so I am really anxious to get the refund.  Maybe dump it in one of the raffles here......

Nice, I have a phone call in to them.  Thanks for the heads up, I will let them know that I am looking for the refund of both fees.  My concern is my credit card got hacked so they sent me a new one.  Not sure if they can credit me back as easy. I will post back to this thread what comes of it.
