Title: What is your car wax of choice?
Post by: DoubleJ on May 05, 2018, 01:48:40 PM
I'm halfway through a wax job on my car using Collinite 476s for the first time.  It's ok.  I have read enough about it to know that I want it as my base wax because working at PSNS means my car gets about 4lbs of bird crap on it every day.  It doesn't shine like I'd like so I'm thinking about going over that base coat with some of my carnuba to shine it up a bit.

What do you like?

I don't have that option.  Well, I guess I do but, that means a longer walk to the shop as well as having to pay to park

Ice is nice as it doesn't white up the plastic for those of us that are looking for quick and easy.

Just old McGuire’s seems to work fine for my old Chevy. Used to like Eagle Wet One but don’t think they make it anymore.

Never tried one but I've heard those clay bricks do a good job. :dunno:

Clay bricks are for cleaning

For those that are wondering, I really hope the reputation of the Collinite being bullet proof for 6 months are accurate.  I won't apply that stuff again without a buffer.  Doing it by hand was miserable.

Wax? Sealant is where it’s at now. I like jescar/menzerna for my sealant/polishing needs. It’s pricey but a little goes a long way with sealant. The cars I care about get 2-3 coats, my boat (which I love) gets 5. Goes quick when you use a power buffer.

My last car I went with 6 coats of Klass Sealant.  Looked great.  Didn't seem to last more than about 3 car washes

I get 6 months or so out of it. If you want longer, look at going ceramic coated.

If you are going to do carnuba next try and find pure carnuba.
Most of them are cleaners. I used the McGuiers ultimate polish the other day on my truck. Pretty easy on and off. Very nice to work with.

That's what I have.  I went to autozone a couple of years ago and they had it miss marked on the shelf for $6.99/can.  I bought all 4 cans they had

How do you guys apply it?  I have a cheapo buffing machine that i have never used.  Doing it by hand on my full sized pick up might paralyze me for a few days.

Really nice stuff to work with. I bought a new truck and noticed the Pollen was really sticking to it. After a little research I realized that brand new vehicles do not come with any wax on them. :dunno: I used the ultimate polish as I said it was super easy now when I pull out of the driveway the pollen all blows off driving down the road. I am thinking I will put another coat on in a month or so. Then about every six months after that.

Haven't done ceramic yet. Was going to on the new car, but even being brand new, it needs a full clay bar and polishing out all the water spots. Vinegar nor Babes boat bright will take the water spots off.
For wax, I typically use Turtle wax Ice or similar spray wax. Zero effort, no more than wiping down the car after washing it and it lasts for a couple months outside or during the rainy season. Cheap n easy, but not the best.
I did get a bottle of nano wax, spray wax. A lot of effort to remove the haze but it has lasted on the hood of my work truck for a few months and counting. Parked outside and driving over the pass a couple times a week. I've been using it on the wheels of all the vehicles mostly. Lasts longer against brake dust and road grime than spray wax.
Basically unless I get an entire weekend to get the new car prepped for ceramic coat, I'll stick with easy wipe on wipe off.

Never used wax on a rig.  Looks like lots of work.

When the wife got the new hotrod I spent a good week reviewing and watching videos on all the new waxes and treatments.  Figured the technology surely had changed for the better since I had a rig I washed and waxed on a regular basis.  After a couple years I'd tried five of the top rated expensive super hyped brands/types.  And while some were down right amazing for the first week they all failed to compare to my old McGuires Carbanuba Gold Class paste in the long run.  Takes a bit longer to apply it right.  But for her prized possession it's a small price to pay, IMO.

I used the Carnuba this weekend on the truck. It does look great. Damn, this Tundra's a big truck! Remind me to get a buffer attachment for the next waxing.

The clay bar is awesome. I've used that on some, older vehicles that were neglected and what a difference that makes.

Every six months I wash off my protective coating of dried mud and bug guts.  Sparkles like a diamond for a couple days before the next protective layer begins to build.

Just like me. I take a shower every year weather I need it or not. Usually around the holidays.

Good to know. I thought the paper mill was blowing this way.  :yike:
