Title: Anyone know these people?
Post by: yakimanoob on May 07, 2018, 06:49:11 PM
Please PM if you know them.

Glad they didn't take my camera, but it's extremely lame that they stole my cable, and I'd like it back.  >:(

It appears that they didn't see the camera, or I'm sure they would have stolen it too. Hope someone recognizes them.

A clean, affluent looking couple in their late 60's stealing a few dollars worth of cable? Seems very strange. I'd guess they didn't know it was attached to a camera and thought they were helping clear litter.

Not that it makes it any less irritating for you, of course.

I'll post a better quality video on YouTube and link it here in a bit.

I had the same thought about them thinking they were cleaning litter.  Honestly, from the way they reacted when they arrived, I think they thought I tied a live elk to the tree to die.

To some folks, the sight of an animals skeleton cabled to a tree may have ticked them off.  :dunno:

:yeah: My guess is that they did not appreciate finding that.

What time of year was this? Doesn't appear that the time stamp is correct, just curious why the dog has orange but they guy with the rifle doesn't.

Yeah the time stamp is off.  They came by my camera on Feb 10th 2018 around noon.  I picked up the camera on May 1.

And yes, I've got some more fun animal footage that I'm still going through/editing.  :)

No help with an ID, but at the very beginning of the video it sounds like the guy says "we should take that...oh, they locked in on there".

Vizslas aren't all that common.  That should help narrow it down a little too.

Good luck getting your cable lock back those things aren't cheap.

Yeah, I can't tell if he says "we should take that" or "would you look at that."  From where he's standing, the former statement doesn't seem to make sense.  He would have hardly been able to even see the cable at that point.

All this whining about a cable left on a skeleton, in the woods for god knows how long and someone takes it. I would of too. If it's left there tied to a baiting station, who's the worst of the two ? You tell us.

I don't care how long someone leaves something tied to a tree or in the woods.  If its not mine I don't have the right to take it.  If you take it you are a thief.

Don't really care either way on this one because i can't figure out any reason for someone to lock a skeleton to a tree why not just tie it to tree with cheap cord,no one is gonna steal the carcass. As for stealing it,I'm not convinced that that was any motive at all.Was the camera on the carcass to view bears and cats?If they didn't take the cam post the pics lol.

Wrong....
I would not take that cable because I could deduct that someone would come back for it with the camera and the carcass.  But if something happened to you and you weren’t coming back you are leaving derelict gear eventually someone would be picking up your garbage.
An argument could even be made that you shouldn’t be cabling up a carcass. It’s disrespectful to the elk.
You may find your thief and he might tell you to stop cabling up animals carcasses.

I might be over reading the rcw. But it says in the rcw it’s illegal to attract bears with bait. Now I know bears come into salt licks, apples etc etc. but a guy can play that off as to baiting elk or deer. Then I also know that a gut pile from a legally harvested animal or a natural death isn’t classified as baiting. But I think when a guy cables a carcass to a tree in front of a cam. Your trying to attract an animal in a way that reads illegal.

(1) Notwithstanding the provisions of RCW 77.12.240, * 77.36.020, 77.36.030, or any other provisions of law, it is unlawful to take, hunt, or attract black bear with the aid of bait.

I never considered that the ban on baiting for hunting would apply to photography, so thanks for bringing that up.  The RCW you quoted does specify "(d) As used in this subsection, "bait" means a substance placed, exposed, deposited, distributed, scattered, or otherwise used for the purpose of attracting black bears to an area where one or more persons hunt or intend to hunt them." So I think I'm in the clear.

On another thread, it was mentioned that a LEO could argue I was in violation of this law if I were to hunt that bear in the fall (under the "intend to hunt them" phrase above).  That's probably right, so I won't be bear hunting anywhere near here for a year or two.

Not thinking about deleting the thread, but I do admit I was a little cranky in my reply to you. Sorry about that.  The implications that it's OK to take things that don't belong to you had me in a bad mood.

The carcass was from my 2017 spike.  I mentioned that I'd post the video of the critters and posted the compilation in the thread "Winter in the elk woods." I used a cable because I new there were cats in the area and wanted to make it hard on them to move it out of the frame.  Figured a cat or bear would make quick work of paracord or the like, and the next toughest thing I had was that cable.
Title: Re: Anyone know these people?

never good to take what don't belong to you that's for sure,I wouldn't hang a carcass on a tree either but that's just my op.There is no time frame around a bait station by the way so the intent to bait for any future bear hunt could potentially be an illegal one.  :twocents:

Geez, some are sure critical of something I've done many times. No I haven't used a cable to secure the bait but I think that's a good idea. It's not illegal to set up a bait for trail cam photos of predators. It's a lot of fun seeing what might visit. And being that it was over the winter, bears aren't the likely target.

I've seen lots of trash piles left in the woods or bits of random garbage scattered in the woods. I've never seen anyone litter and then secure it to keep it from being moved or removed. I don't get the they thought it was litter argument. Extrapolating from that any trail camera is potentially litter and fair game for removal from the woods. Every truck parked at a turnoff should be towed out of the public forest. I don't like this argument.

I will say it's not right to take someone's stuff that's left in the woods. But on the other hand anytime you put stuff in the woods you have to expect that someone may find it .So I wouldn't get upset to much ,if it's something you can't afford to lose then keep it at home. Its kinda a risk-reward thing with game cams and the amount of d-bags out in the woods theses days. :twocents:

How did the cable get off the tree? I'm assuming it was wrapped around the tree a few times and locked. Ribs were pulled and eaten on and fell to the ground but wouldn't the cable still be locked around the tree? I can't see the video right now to check my memory.
How did they get it from around the tree? Cut/chopped?
Or did they walk away with a perfectly good uncut cable they found laying on the ground not around the tree?

Fair point about the risk/reward, but I'm also of the mindset that not reporting a crime simply encourages and enables crime.  It's a $30 cable if I remember right; and it's not like I want them to be in jail.  I want my stuff back on principle, and I don't hate the idea of the police knocking on their door to teach them a lesson  :chuckle:.  But seriously, if they return the cable it's no harm no faul.

Ahhhhh, makes sense now.
They just lifted the cable over the rather tall stump.
Taking things found in the woods is an interesting discussion.
Oddly, I have a different view for different items.
A camera found might get a full moon, a wave or if put over a spot I've been set up for a while and someone wants to take pictures of my effort, a turn on the tree, but never take them.
I've found random cables laying on the ground that seem to have been there for a while and if I can use it, I've taken it. Thinking maybe old logging equipment that was left behind.
Never come across a new style cable wrapped around a tree stump through a rib cage from a 6 month old kill. If I did come across that I'd for sure check for a camera around though. If camera is seen, I would think the puzzle would be put together for me of someone wanting predator pictures and the cable and carcass has a purpose and an owner. A cable with no camera would be a head scratcher and the conclusion I would think would be baiting for something for someone to come kill. I wouldn't take the cable though because I would have no means to unlock or cut it. Of that same cable was found laying in the woods on the ground not around a tree and no camera watching it. I would take it and see it as litter and throw it away. Not take it thinking I'm stealing someone's property.

Post by: yakimanoob on May 10, 2018, 08:03:44 AM
I'm with ya, 92xj.  When I got to the site and saw the rib cage on the ground and no cable, I figured a critter had torn it down and a person had wandered by and picked up what would have looked like trash.  Totally understandable.

It would also be 100% understandable if someone had seen the setup and called the ranger (to your point about thinking someone was baiting to kill).

But what these folks did is a different story.  You can hear them talking about how nice the cable is, then he inspects the length after breaking the rib cage and removing it.  It seems pretty obvious to me that they saw something they wanted, and decided to take it.

Cant see the video (im at work) but if I find a skeleton cabled to a tree, Id take it down and clean it up "the litter".  Maybe not if I see a camera on it as it might click in my head what it is.   Ive removed and cleaned up all sorts of weird animal parts hanging  from trees.   Ive seen people hang some really weird things in the woods.   I like my woods clean and do my best to pass on a good hunters image.  Most of the time its in abandoned hunters camps.

You'd do this the first time you came across something?  I pick up plenty of trash, including a few cables, but I would never take down something that was obviously set up a certain way (the dude had to break the skeleton apart and lift it off the tall stump, then break the skeleton further to get the cable out); at least not the first time I came by it.  They didn't so much as look around for the camera -- it was at eye level in a big non-camo metal box about 15' away with a thick black python cable around it.

I don't know.  I just have a hard time seeing an honest, experienced outdoorsman like yourself doing what these folks did.

I'd also not label the couple as thieves.

Did they steal the cable?  I don't know that I would say they did.

They obviously took it, but they probably thought it was abandoned.  They had no idea the camera was there overlooking the carcass, so they must have thought some hunter had strung it up there during hunting season.  And how long had it been since hunting season was over???........they obviously thought it was abandoned. :twocents:

My question to those who assume they were doing a "good deed" and must have "assumed" it was abandoned, what leads you to this? Is it because it was a respectable older looking couple? What if it was a couple 20 somethings or teenagers dressed in scrappy clothes, would you come to the same assumptions?

I pose this question not because I disagree but just curious how some on here are convinced they were doing this will good intent...  :dunno:

Well, I really try to give the benefit of the doubt to most people.  But I admit that I am also stereotyping a bit in this case due the look of this older couple.

But the other thing is the timing.  The carcass has obviously been there a long time.  They probably thought nobody was coming back.

The carcass had been there for 42 days, just for the record.  The cable was a nice vinyl-coated one with a master lock on it, wouldn't have had any rust, etc.  I get it that people come to weird conclusions, and I wouldn't be surprised if they thought they were cleaning up the place.  But they weren't, and they're no less thieves because of their intentions.  They took something that they had no right to take, ergo...

And I'll say again, I'm not hoping for jail time or even a fine here.  Just want my cable back and wouldn't mind having a LEO knock on their door to teach them to think twice next time.

Seriously! It’s a $25 cable. You got great footage from it. Take the footage and be happy. They had no idea the cam was there. So they took the cable. To clean up our woods. No big deal. Have you checked the local lost/found Facebook sites or any other sites  to see if they posted on there. Or did you just jump to conclusions and couldn’t wait to blast them with the title “THIEVES”

Jumping to conclusions, by the definition you seem to be using, is inevitable.  You jumped to the conclusion they were cleaning up the woods; I jumped to the conclusion they took something they saw and wanted.  As I've stated clearly, I'm not talking about criminal charges here.  I'm just looking for information so I can get my cable back.

I'm genuinely surprised by two things here:

1) the implication that these people did nothing wrong.

2) the propensity for people on the internet to be upset when someone says something they don't like.  You don't think I should want my cable back?  That's fine.  But the goal of your post and others on here seem to be to get me to stop talking about it.  I don't understand that.  If you don't like this thread, just ignore it.

And to put your collective minds at ease, yes I have checked the sites I can find and asked around locally.  And no, I haven't filed any kind of report on this or talked to the LEOs.  If I get a name of someone I don't know and no one feels comfortable mediating, then I'd ask the rangers for advice on how to handle the situation -- if I should approach them or they should, etc.

Best case, someone knows them and can reach out to them asking for the cable to be returned, and since they were just cleaning up trash they'll return it to me promptly.

Did that.  Posted it on a separate thread for everyone to enjoy, and linked it here as well.  And if getting this kind of footage means giving up a $25 cable, you bet I'll keep doing it every winter without a second thought.  If this goes nowhere, it was $25 well-spent.

But none of that implies I shouldn't try to get my $25 back.

I'm confused a bit here? You mentioned you would like a LEO to pay them a visit... For what exactly? Assuming this is on public land, they found and removed garbage from public land. I'm not seeing any sort of violation of any laws here aside from you littering on public land. I understand your goal of placing the trail cam and carcass there but you had to know what you were doing came with certain risks. While I understand that you may be upset that your cable was removed I really don't see any way of justifying it. I'm very curios what an LEO report would look like here that wouldn't implicate you...

I can see this thread going no where,I don't think anyone on here thinks its ok to take something that don't belong but lets look at this from an uneducated about hunters point of view.
Did they think what you were doing was illegal? (not but they may think it was)

Did they think someone tied game to a tree to return for the meat later but didn't(wasting)

Did they think it was trash and left abandoned?(they didn't see the cam)

Did they outright steal a cable left on a tree?(cable $25. cam $100)Did not steal cam.

You said you have not contacted any LEO on this matter,Maybe you should. They may have turned it in to be investigated(if they don't know anything about hunting)

Unattended items are not garbage. It is not illegal, to the best of my knowledge anyway, for a private citizen to place a camera, use bait to lure critters into the frame, and secure that bait with a cable on public land.

Everyone here, I assume, would agree that they were thieves if they had taken the camera.  And no one would argue "yeah they took your stuff but they left your SD card so just shut up and be happy with your cool footage."  From my perspective, they took a part of my setup.  Which part they took, and the relative cost of that part, and their intentions in doing so are immaterial to the determination of wrong-doing.

The stuff about a LEO knocking on their door is just to shock them into realizing what they did was wrong.  If that never happens and I get the cable back with a lecture from them on why I shouldn't leave trash in the woods, whatever.  I know I may never get an apology from them, but I like to go for gold so...

I've been thinking about that.  Honestly my thinking was to check here first in case someone knew them and I could get it back without making a big deal of it.  But then I let myself get sucked in to arguing on the internet...

If they don't know anything about hunting, I hope they leave the bolt gun at home for their next hike...  just sayin'.

You beat me to it, but i will it anyways. If they would have taken the trail camera and left the cable everyone on here would be calling them no-good POS and thieves. But since they took a cable that was clearly placed there for a REASON some think they arent thieves. To me it is no differet than taking a camera or a treestand.

I have found many things in the woods. Stuff i have found that appears to be placed there for a REASON i leave alone. But say the cable was on the ground half covered in pine needles and all rusty than i would assume its been abandoned and its trash.  But this clearly isnt the case.

Not sure if Skyval is insinuating that I’m trying to drag you into an argument.  I hope not.   As I mentioned I can’t see your set up or the people.  I’m just offering that that if I found a skeleton tied to a tree, I’d probably remove it and would remove the cable as trash. Especially if there was any chance of it causing damage down the road.    I’ve found some pretty weird things in the woods and tend to lean heavy to no trace.   Just offering a side of the possible story.   If I had noticed the camera, things would have clicked and I’d have left it alone.

I don't think you're trying to drag anyone into arguing.  FWIW, I've had overall great experiences with the mods here.  I misunderstood what h20 was saying earlier, but we talked over PM and we're all good.  I appreciate the job y'all are doing.

There's certainly some grey area between something that is obviously intentional and something that is obviously trash.  I'm curious to know your thoughts once you've had a chance to watch the video.
