Title: Warning to dog owners, heart breaking end.
Post by: trophyhunt on May 09, 2018, 08:27:20 PM
Two days ago my dog seemed just fine, yesterday he didn't want to eat his dinner, strange but maybe the neighbor feed him.  Well today he took huge turn for the worst, my daughter ended up taking him in. Completely lethargic, wouldn't walk, eat, or drink.  Blood and xrays come back normal, the damn vet asks her if she wants to put him down!!!!!!!!!! Not even knowing what is wrong she asks that question. So they want to keep him over night but nobody will be there to watch him, so we bring him home, they gave us saline to give him topically.  Turns out after searching google, I think I know what is going on, I'm 99% sure he is poisoned by eating moldy grass clippings.  The other day I found a huge pile of black looking grass poop in the yard, I thought it was our local bear back in town.  I also just bought a new lawn blower and to test it out I blew my grass clipping pile apart, exposing the middle rotten, moldy grass.  Turns out this is very toxic to dogs, I never knew that.  Well after 48 hours the toxins have already entered my dogs system.  So we sit with him tonight hoping he lives through the night, not sure what will happen.  He's 12 years old and has been through tough times before, he's one of the best dogs ever, ever.  I know we all love our dogs to no end, I just wanted to pass on this warning, leave your grass clippings in one big pile or keep them secure.

Sure sounds like something injested. There are 24 hour Vets in some towns, and/or some vets that will come in for emergencies I think. Seems like he should treated somehow...antibiotics?  Man, I hope he gets through this. Sorry your pup and family are going through this.

From what I've read after 24 to 48 hours the toxins are already in the system.  He is really bad, not sure what else to say. Long night ahead of us. Thanks for your thoughts, my daughter is just crushed, and she is graduating college in a couple weeks, should be her happiest days.

Black grassy poop.  Bleeding internally.  Might not be anything to do with grass itself?  Very bad.  Poison from another source? Read about grass and yeah weird.  Very not common.  Wifes clinic has never had a case to her knowledge.  Hydrate and hope, dogs are tough.  Hope for good outcome but maybe Vet can still help if possible?  IV fluids?

Didn't the vet give you a binding agent for mycotoxin? (mold) Or maybe it's too late?

They have it for domestic animals, I've researched it for hogs that got some moldy hay that had pregnancy issues, they gotta have it for dogs too  :dunno:

On the hogs you sprinkle on their food and it binds to the mold toxins rendering them inert until the body pulls them out, or something like that.

They sent us home with an IV bag, they also filled his back up with fluids before we left. The bag will be good for 2 days, we just need to inject the fluid each day.  thank you

What the hell just happened,,, a damn freight train just went through the middle of our hearts.  My boy died in our arms tonight around 11, he was chasing balls just yesterday.. so damn heart broke... Man I'm not so happy with God right now even though I know it's not his fault.  I'll never know if it was the grass that killed him or some other poison, but he's gone. so heartbroke I can't stand it....

I just want to bring this up again, we are not positive it was the moldy grass that killed him, but some kind of poison did and I'm pretty sure it was the grass.  so remember this so your dog doesn't suffer the same fate, I never knew this could happen.

First place we checked was 500 dollars not including the tests.  Just not in the budget unfortunately.

Very sorry for your loss. I’m at a loss for words. Some say they are pets, I completely disagree. To me they are family (my children). You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers. My heart goes out to you and yours in this difficult time.

lot's of tears today for my daughter and I, not sure how my wife made it to work but she is the most dedicated person I've ever known.  There was no slug bait, I'm almost sure it was the grass, which kills me because if I didn't blow the pile off Rocky would still be chasing tennis balls in the yard or sleeping next to my daughter.  We buried him today next to his mom (KC), who died 4 years ago during the time of another graduation for my daughter. I do blame myself for this, I just didn't know.  Damn dogs will eat anything.  We will get another lab someday, best dogs out there in my opinion.  Did I mention how much this forum means to me at times!! We can bicker and fight, disagree most the time and even get banned for a week or two. But when people hurt or need help, we are there and now all your words are making a difference, really, I read all the comments and sometimes it brings me back to tears and sometimes I heal a bit more.  Just wanting to say thank you to all you guys/gals, this is a special group and I appreciate being a part of it.

Sorry for your family’s loss.  They are definitely family members just for too short a time.  A buddy at work almost lost his dog between Sun night and Monday.  A big super dog German Shepherd that comes to our office about once a week for the last 2 years.  He almost ran himself to death on Sunday he apparently got heat stroke and almost died in the night.  Owner just thought he was tired but the dog apparently doesn’t know when to quit.  He was in the dog hospital Mon through Th AM but is OK now.  He even cane by the office.  I know my buddy was really scared he almost let the dog run himself to death.  I’d have never thought about that at this time of year.  Sorry for your loss but don’t blame yourself, those are things that just don’t cross the mind.  Things happen and sometimes there are just accidents.  You’ll see him again someday, just sucks to lose him too early.....Take Care remember the good times

Sorry for your loss Trophy, dogs sure do become just like a true child. A few weeks from now i will unfortunately be going thru the same thing as we have made the decision to put our almost 13 yr old black lad down just before Memorail Day. ive know this day has been coming for about a year now but that certainly doesnt make it any easier. She is hands down the best dog ive ever owned, both hunting and family wise. Again sorry for this devastating time and my your boy rest in peace!

Sorry for your loss man.  That’s aweful.

I really appreciate you sharing about the moldy grass.  It’s something we will keep an eye out for at our place. It’s frustrating because you never know about something like that until you or someone you know experiences it.  You may have saved a number of dogs in the future by sharing your story.

Dogs truly are family members.  Losing them is like losing a part of yourself.

Hooked, I'm am sorry to hear about your lab.  Please tell us about her a bit and post pics. We had to have our female lab put down 4 years ago, rips your heart out.  I had the chance to sit down with her and we each had a beer together right before we took her in.  Enjoy the next couple weeks to the fullest with her, let her eat off your plate, or sit on the couch, what ever has never been allowed.  I feel myself regretting the little stuff that I used to bitch about.  Take care
