-
Big!! Just big! :yike:
-
Yes sir hes a monster I got till end of June to get him so Im hoping. This is the same bear i was also after last year
-
What’s hanging in the tree? Good luck on connecting on him!
-
Looks like a 200# bear. Good luck getting him!
-
Kill him and let us know!

How many bear do you get to shoot? You said in your post about your 31st bear that it was your second bear of the year. That post was 2 minutes before this post so wouldn’t that make this your 3rd bear you’re going to shoot. :dunno:

That was my guess as well.

He didn't say the other bear was from Washington. Just Sayin'.
-
I'm gonna guess 270.
Great looking bear.
Let us know.
-
Yes this will be my third of the year. One in Idaho two on the quinault reservation
-
Well I would guess your 32nd bear will be 300+, hold out for him that’s a good one. Good luck.
-
Looks to be in the 300+ range to me too
-
Big enough! Go get him!
-
Pics can be very deceiving, but that looks like a very large bear to me, if we were betting I would bet he is 400 or more. How wide is his front pad?
-
What size is the barrel?
-
If that's a fifty gallon drum I would put that bear at 400 plus pounds, pictures are hard to judge by but that is definitely bigger than 350 !! I hope you connect so we get the true weight !! Good luck man
-
300. All black bears are 300.
-
6.5ft at least and 350 min. If that's a 50gallon barrel. Large pretty beast! Good luck. Get em so we can get real measurements!!
-
Idaho I assume, 55 gal drum, 350+, 30 gallon 200ish
-
The Quinault, and surrounding area, sure produces some behemoths! Good luck....hopefully that boy doesn't go nocturnal. I bet he shows back up in the next day or two then you can report some real numbers.
-
Holy moly. I've yet to lay my eyes on a 400# spring bear. That'd put him into the 500# range in the Fall.
Regardless - Good Luck!
I stand by the 200# range.
-
I stand by the 200# range.
Do you even internet, bro? 500lbs easy! :chuckle:
-
There are some whopper bears along the coast, alot of those big ones are baited right along the reservation line. I wish we could still bear bait it looks like a blast.
-
Holy moly. I've yet to lay my eyes on a 400# spring bear. That'd put him into the 500# range in the Fall.

How bigs the one in your avatar?
-
What's the price of a quinalt hunt ?

That’s a 5’10” 185# spring Bear.
I’ve butchered a 7’ spring Bear and it went 250#.
It takes a big dog to weigh a ton.
-
I woulda guessed 125 tops. That bear in the pick only has 15 lbs on your bear???? Anymore pics?
-
unless that's a 33 gallon drum that bear is very big, can't wait to see him on the ground.
I see in the first pic it's a blue 55 gallon drum, he's a toad gonna go 7 foot probably. 55 gallon drums are just shy of 3 feet tall and he towers over it.
-

Exactly

It looks like they are using chupacabarra for bait! :yike:
-
Do those coasties even hibernate??
-
One full gallon of beef weighs about 7.35 pounds. Most bear skinned and halved with shoulders and legs removed will easily fit in a 150 quart cooler by putting the legs into the rib cage, a 150 cooler is 37.5 gallons. I thought the barrels look like 50 gallon size and it doesn't look to me like that bear will fit into one barrel? :dunno:

If you break the bear down enough it'll fit into the barrel, but it'll be a 400 lb barrel ;D

That bear is 6’ tall standing on his legs! When did we start measuring bears from nose to foot??
He’s a good bear, not trying to take away from that.

And I am standing next to you saying the same.
People over estimate bears more than fish for some reason.
3 foot barrel 6 foot bear reasonable tummy thick pelt 200lbs

A 200# bear in Washington is the average size.

Here’s some perspective. These are true behemoths. 20+” skulls and 6.5-7.5’ tall.
Just goes to show you that bears just AREN’T that big.
Yes...there’s been some fatty apple eaters over the years...but mostly on the east coast.
Average mature sows are 135 with boar being 165. Sorry if you want them bigger.
I’d put this bear at 225-30. Couple more weeks of eating donuts though and who knows...

All the adult ones I've seen that got away went at least 350. Only been able to tag the little ones. :chuckle:
-
I have bears regularly standing near my 50 gallon barrels on my acreage. As does my large lab. Based on actual measured live weight of the lab, and the neighborhood bears size in comparison to the bear in the photo.....my guess is about 300lbs live weight for that bear.....IF that is a 50 gallon or larger barrel.
-
Wait a minute, you mean all those bears I see on the Latest magazine cover aren’t 500#?????
Who’s been lying to me all these years????

The Axiom of bears: all bears are big except the ones killed and weighed. :tung:
It is hard to judge weight by a photo, and only one of these pics shows much about his size... but I'd agree with the 300 lb. or more guess. And then only believe it if it is a scale weight rather than estimate. Wish we had a profile of the whole bear and a view of the bear's head with it looking straight and level at the camera. 300 lbs. is a big bear, especially in spring.
Most bears that I see in hunter pics are not nearly as big as the weight claimed, and virtually all of the weights are estimates. I forgive a guide for guessing big to make his client feel good.
I’ve handled quite a lot of bears in the past 50 years, not concentrated on big ones most of that time. I'm sure that two of those bears weighed well over 400 lbs. One of those was 9 miles from the trail head in the North Cascades, and very careful estimates convinced me that it weighed 460 lbs. It was a super fat Fall bear and the measured hide went 6' 9”. You may cheerfully put that weight in the roll-our-eyes estimates category. The other huge bear was on Vancouver Island, fattest bear I've handled and hide just over 7'. We only packed it ½ mile and weighed parts of it the next day, so it goes in the estimates also.
Bravo on you to find this bear. IIWY I'd stay after him! If circumstances permit weighing him, please do so and tell us the fact.
-
Thats a nice bear, especially in this state. Goodluck
-
When the legs appear short, the head appears small, and it looks like the bear is mostly body you are looking at a big bear. Photos can be deceiving, but I don't think there is a bear photo posted after the first post that is as big. I hope the OP gets this bear just so we all find out how heavy it is!
Just to add a little fun, I'll bet a brick of .22 that bear is closer to 400 than 200 or 300, provided the OP gets the bear and weighs it, any takers?

I'm with you. Look up some of the huge bears that have come off the Quinalt. Big skulls and fat bodies. I would agree that this bear is close to 400. Yes, most people overestimate the weight of bears, but look at the width of this guy at the shoulders. Look at his girth at this early date. This is a very nice bear.
-
Obviously that bear has been hitting the daily all you can eat at the casino before hitting the blue drum diner.

I'm going to take your bet, just because of my original guess. (270 Lbs.)
I have been in on a number of bear kills, so I feel pretty confident.
(that number may just be 0..... :-) )

I would not bet against you on this one. ;) I was conservative as to what I really think he will weigh when I agreed that I think he will go over 300. Sure hope we get a scale weight on this one!
-
Many assume this "spring" bear should be 25% lighter than a fall bear but have ya thought maybe he doesn't sleep all winter? Being coastal with mild weather and possibly plenty of food might explain his size? I dunno but I don't see how that bear could be less 300lb. I don't see a record monster but I do see a large May bear. Genetics of the area support that as well. Maybe they are fed during winter to support size and hunting customers? :dunno:

I bet the OP bear is every bit as big as those bears. The bears you pictured only look that huge because of camera angles. That is some very flattering photography.

 Done deal, it will be fun to see if we get a weight, good luck to the hunter, it's a dandy bear no matter what the weight turns out to be!
-
Luckily B&C has solved this weight problem for us by not considering weight at all. As you all know, bears are scored by skull size and I’m guessing that bear will go over 20”.

Impossible to tell from that pic but it would be cool indeed if he makes book. If he's not 20" he's darn close.
Bigjon you owe us an update.

All the adult ones I've seen that got away went at least 350. Only been able to tag the little ones. :chuckle:
:chuckle: As a general rule in Idaho every bear missed is at least 300 pounds. This is a minimum and I have not noticed any maximum weight as a rule. Most bears that I have actually helped retrieve for others have averaged around 150(most of mine average at least 200 ha ha) Its also an unwritten rule that bears shot but not yet recovered are always at least 300 pounds but some how loose at least half their weight between the time shot and actual retrieval. :chuckle: Not trying to derail the thread I just want to make sure you guys understand the rules when bear hunting Idaho. I think the bear will weigh somewhere over 350 but not 400. I would not bet against Bearpaw I think he has seen more than a few bears up close on the ground. 400 or above is just so rare in the spring(at least where I have hunted) I don't think so. hopefully bigjon can weigh it! Good job getting (hopefully) three bears by the way overachiever!
-
If this was my thread.....24 inch skull, 450lb.
If I saw the bear but just a glimpse a min 20 inch skull 350 easy.
If I saw the bear and missed I'd guess about 20....300 lbs.
If i saw the bear and killed it.....about 12 inches and 150 pounds still crying for mamma.
Nice bear....please kill it and put that sucker on the wall. Thanks for sharing and taking us along.
EDIT: This bear has been killed, see the success topic here:

@bearpaw... I think you made a wager on this bear with someone.

Since this was so hotly debated before, you actually scaled him right? And took a picture?
My snarky-ness aside, he’s a great bear. Curious to see his skull size.
Also curious to hear squared rug size.

Great bear!!
I notice the 200lb club is mighty quiet.... grin
I still didn’t see where they scaled him...if it’s just an estimate I’ll shrug my shoulders, say congrats, and move on.
I also would like to see the taped 7’ nose to tail.

I'm sure the 7'8" guy in the red shirt measured the 7 feet...
-
Great bear. He is a tank.
This is the one I found archery hunting last year. Called a buddy and he dropped it with a boom stick, it's tied for 3rd all time in Montana.
8'1" from nose to base of tail. Skull net is 21 4/16
For reference, that table IS a sheet of plywood.

You should submit that bear. If the skull measurements are legit (no reason to doubt you, that’s the archery state record.)

It's a Montana bear I called him in cow calling and could have taken him but I didn't have a tag. Where I'm at over there I tend to call in a bear every other day.

If any of you read my posts a few weeks ago I have been after this bear for two years. Finally after 200 hours in the blind Meet Bear number 32 I got him 730AM this morning, this boy is a HOG. Probably not to many around like him anymore, hes over 7 feet, 400 pounds and a Boon and Crockett Skull. Im very Happy with this beautiful Black Bear!
Big Jon
Awesome, I saw your photos in your first post and agreed that it was a huge bear, you can tell by the way it's built. Congratulations, that's one heckuva bear and you are far more devoted to the hunt than most hunters. Over 200 hours is an amazing feat in it's own right! I'm anxious to hear what the head officially scores when you get it measured, there are not that many bear from Washington that make the book, congrats on taking the bear of a lifetime! His photos of the bear alive: https://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,227203.0.html
Having seen a lot of live bear and dead bear I know that any 7 foot bear is pretty heavy and that bear has been eating bait so I figured he was probably fat as well, it appears that way in the photos. I probably should apologize for this, but I made a wager with another member that the bear would be closer to 400 than 200 if it was taken and weighed, by any chance did you weigh any part of the bear on a scale?
Official scale weight or not, I am paying up!!!!!!
I only took the bet for fun, and if Big Jon can sit for 200 hours to kill that monster, I can pay up.
That thing is a PIG, a MONSTER and a BRUTE all at the same time.
Congratulations on a bear of a lifetime!

:yeah: Dan-O you are a very honorable person because he hasn't said if he weighed the bear! I'll send my address and donate the funds to an upcoming contest that we are working out the details to hopefully start next month.
I sort of feel bad that we disrupted both of his topics by discussing the size of the bear and then betting on it, he was simply trying to share his once-in-a-lifetime hunting story!

Nice bear but neither of the bears posted by OP are near the size as advertised.

This bear is huge, and I think it's silly to call Bigjon a liar, it's pissing me off and it's not even my bear.

It's crap like this what keeps people from sharing their success stories with the rest of us :nono:

Mind blown.

So saying this bear is anything other than 400lbs is calling Bigjon a liar, I dare you so say so in his face :chuckle:
I think people don't realize how big Bigjon is, he makes 250lb bears look small.

Right.
Keep drinking the Kool-Aid.

:dunno:
I don't get it, what reasoning do we have to not take Bigjon at his word?
-
Big John is big and he isn’t taking those ridiculous trophy shots where you can barely reach the tail of the animal to make it look as big as possible. Bet he never posts a pic on here again
-
I don’t know Bigjon from Adam.
If Jesus Christ himself posted that bear as 400# I would ask him if he had lost it.
I’m done taking away from the thread. It’s a very nice bear; but we see this every year.
I’m for providing solid data to the claims.
Everyone kills a 400# bear on Hunt-Wa!!!
Drink that Kool-Aid! Chug it!

It's crap like this what keeps people from sharing their success stories with the rest of us :nono:
Doubtful.
Someone posts a toad bear and says “hey I got a toad out at quinault!” Everyone on here would say great job, nice bear, TOAD, etc.
Someone posts a toad bear and says “400lbs” and it’s obvious it’s not then ya call him or her out on it.
There is no way either bear was the weight as advertised. Both are great bears and I’d be happy to shoot either.

I can't seem to find the weigh colum on that page... Maybe B&C forgot it? :dunno:

He is a toad, and looks as bear paw said every bit of 300-400 lbs. I have seen quite a few in the size range, and he fits the mold

Not trying to stir the pot even more. But did you guide and scale a bunch of bears? I’m just curious what has allowed you to see “quite a few once in a lifetime sized bears.”

I have guided hundreds of bear and we used to scale most of the bigger ones. I've seen about a half dozen bear weigh from 400 to 456 pounds on a scale and one that we had to piece out that I estimated at 550. He was the largest we ever got and I'm convinced he only got that big because he was eating bait every night back when baiting was legal. That bear is #7 in SCI handgun and is lifesize mounted on a modified large grizzly form because no black bear forms were large enough. Since baiting was outlawed the bear quit getting as big! It's unusual to find a bear over 350 nowadays in NE WA. But the key point in this whole discussion is that this is a fat bear that has been eating lots of bait and he probably ate fish too considering the location, that all makes bear bigger. Looking at the broadness and bulk of the bear I knew it was a safe bet to say he was over 300 and I completely believe the OP that it's a 400 pounder. The photos were not taken in a way that makes the bear look bigger, if anything the photos made the bear look smaller.
I suppose if you've never seen a 400 pound bear on a scale it's hard to believe. Just think, in places like North Carolina, Pennsyvania, and Michigan they are killing bear regularly that weigh 500 to 700 pounds!
Let me add this again:
The photo standing on the barrel is the clincher, I think that's a 55 gal barrel, red meat weighs about 8 lbs per gallon! Do the math!

I am disgusted so many know everything bear experts could post like they have. To not take the word of a seemingly honorable man is bad. To not trust the knowledge of a man who has harvested/guided more bear than many have seen on TV is frankly astonishing. I don't know much about bears. I am smart enough to recognize others who do. I am a person who could over estimate bear size based on my limited knowledge and ignorance. I do know Bearpaw is much much more likely correct than most plus I personally thought it to be a huge bait/coastal bear. How could you not? Bigjon that's a well deserved awesome bear whether its 299lb or 399lbs!!! Please continue to update us on your story and congrats. To others who continue to insist on "Being right" grow up.

In defense of everyone who has commented, the OP did ask how big anyone thought the bear was? So that was in itself asking for a discussion about the size. One of the other moderators did remove all the negative posts from the success topic and put them all in this topic.

This bear makes a 55 gallon drum look small... Having read what I consider to be expert opinions on the matter of the size of this bear and seeing the bear hung up. I will stand with the gentleman stating the bear is 350-400 lbs and could easily push that 400 lbs envelope. Don't care what others think. Awesome bear to the OP! I hope to someday kill a bear in that class!

When baiting was legal, and we fed year around, as not to loose our bakery contracts. They grew big, we killed 14 over 350 and some to 498 hanging in locker. As bear paw said the bait grew big bears. The beat by the OP is a big bear. And I would take him at every avail opertunity, congrats to a toad, Bring back bear baiting👍

Hopefully, Bigjon will be posting a pic of this monster very soon. Go get 'em.
