Wolves breed problems for Washington ranchers

"The ranch loses about 70 head to wolves a year, Len McIrvin said. State wildlife managers typically confirm a handful of depredations. Ranchers can apply for compensation for losses. To avoid giving tacit approval to Fish and Wildlife’s management of wolves, the McIrvins said they haven’t and won’t seek compensation."
“It’s such a crooked, damn deal they’re throwing at us,” he said. “Wolves and cattle are like oil and water. They do not mix, and they never will.”

Add the open cow rate of 20%, up from 5%, plus the weight loss not mentioned and you reach seven figures on one ranch. Not a big deal for a multi billion dollar business state wide, but a nightmare for these guys. Wolf supporters and the State are responsible.

Len told me at the Cattlemens Association Meeting in Colville a couple years ago, he would never take money from the WDFW because he'd be in their back pocket and he wasn't going to do that.

McIrvins are the biggest ranchers in NE WA, but many of the smaller ranchers are also incurring big losses for the size of their operation.

These ranchers need some ADF&G wolf treats and a airplane, and stay off the phone with WDF&Wolves etc., what WDF&wolves don't know won't hurt them.

I heard that last summer a wolf met an altercation with a logging truck and came out on the short end. During the investigation it was asked if the logger had tried to swerve. His response was "I did". :chuckle:

I had a buddy put his truck in the ditch chasing a cat.... I often wonder if anyone would put one in a ditch to avoid one

Alaska Department of Fish and Game have had a huge history in dropping special baits out of the airplane in order to curtail the impact of wolves on Caribou. They may have perfected the "Wolf Recipe". What work's in Alaska should work in WA? From everything I have been told a plane is not needed.
