Reward leading to conviction now at $15,000
The Stevens County Cattlemen’s Association recently increased the reward amount they are offering for information that leads to a conviction of those responsible for shooting, killing and maiming cattle in Stevens County. Since cattlemen in Stevens County began to experience consistent wolf attacks in 2012, cattle have been the target for malicious opportunists who are shooting cattle while they are grazing near a public roadway. The animals are often shot at random and left to die. SCCA suspects the attacks are being carried out by those who may be upset about environmental issues, including the current conflict with wolves. An anonymous supporter from Western Washington recently donated $10,000 towards the reward in an effort to catch those responsible.
“We have been running a reward ad for the last several years to try and catch those who are responsible for this,” said SCCA President Justin Hedrick. “No matter how you feel about wolves or any cattle related issue, it is cowardly and cruel to take it out on an animal. We are working with local law enforcement on this issue and have accepted the donation to increase the reward amount.”
Hedrick said SCCA will pay out $15,000 a year for information leading to a conviction related to the cattle deaths. Those with information regarding the attacks on cattle are encouraged to call the Stevens County or Ferry County Sheriff’s offices or call SCCA directly at 680-3497.
Whoever that is from W WA hats off

I'm sorry but people have been shooting cows long before wolves were in this state. So if someone shoots a couple cows in Stevens County they're some environmentalist wolf lover but if they shoot them in Grant County they're just a ahole?
This is nothing more than the SCCA trying to tie something with wolves that has a 99% chance of it not being related. People have shot at cows as long as we've been on this planet, doesn't matter if wolves are there or not.
-
I think it makes sense since the cattle are "responsible" for the killing of wolves in the minds of environmentalist. In their mind the cattle should not even be out there and they definitely don't want any public land grazing. Its not a stretch to believe an enviro is shooting a cow for retribution for the wolves that were shot. I am sure they thinks it the cattles fault for being there not the wolves for eating them. They spiked trees and ruined equipment to "save trees". "its inhumane and unjustified to put livestock on top of important predators and expect the predators to not take a bite out of them" quote tim coleman executive director of kettle range conservation group. With that mindset its not a stretch that these people would shoot a cow to "get even". They have threatened the lives of ranchers? why wouldn't they shoot a cow. Its not hard to make the connection or it could be some jerk kids. I wouldn't dismiss that it could be a crazy environmentalist either.
-
We had a cow shot a few years back. But they butchered it on the spot and took as much as they could. Was impressive how clean they left the bones! Cops said they would most likely never catch them unless they returned to do it again and were caught them in the act

I don't think it's 99% chance of being unrelated. The anti-grazing, anti-cattle sentiment has risen dramatically since the wedge pack was killed. Even here on HW no one really talked about public grazing rights before wolves and the bundy deal, but now I could point to quite a few hostile posts towards cattle and ranchers, and that's coming from hunters not peta, not defenders of wildlife, not conservation northwest (ok maybe a few of those guys on here :chuckle: ) .....point is the anti-cattle sentiment has risen sharply since 2012.
So IMO, not that big of a leap, but yes it is speculation that wolf huggers are killing cows in retaliation for wolves being killed.
It could also be someone peeved at the cows getting into their garden, they live on free range they have to fence them out but not everyone knows that. That's been going on forever too.

Some people are just a holes with guns. Or bows. The same kind who shoot and leave deer and elk for the "thrill" of it, are to me no different than the ones who shoot or poison pets in their yards or shoot livestock. In a different category than those poaching meat, whether wild or domestic (I've found three shot and boned out branded calves over the years, and the brand inspectors I reported them to saw many cases every year).
That said, given the emotional extremism of the folks on both ends of the wolf debate, I could see extreme wolf lovers shooting cattle as some kind of insane "justice" in wolf conflict areas; or crazy wolf haters shooting cattle in wolf conflict areas to put the blame on wolf lovers. Nuts is nuts.

@Curly
I bolded the part above with you in mind in the opening post, I know you think I hate everyone west of the cascade crest but that's not the case at all. Ya I get frustrated, and that shows here time to time, but I wanted to point out there are great people on your side of the state that do care about the issues we face here in E WA.

Remind me again who was sabotaging logging equipment? Wasn't it environmentalist extremists? :dunno:

:yeah:

Are you guys really arguing about this? None of you know who shot the cows.
Imma go read the bigfoot thread.

These are not animal rights or environmental activists...that's just a dumb idea being pushed for political purposes. If cattle operations were being interfered with that did not directly involve shooting or harming animals I would say for sure it's them...cutting fences, damaging equipment etc. are how enviro wackos act. This is plain ol criminal activity by dumb kids, annoyed neighbors, or some locals with a grudge.

Really? They have burned down buildings with animals in them,Peta has killed more animals than people think.Animal rights people hate when people own pets except for them.Biggest hypocrites on the planet.

I hope they catch them so we can find out

That would be nice but we still will never know.If it is an animal activist they probably wont be specific.Since they are gun owners whether legal or not that will be the only narrative they will concern themselves with.We just have to wait and see if the gun is at fault or not. :chuckle:

I agree.
Someone shoots a cow in King County its a dumb kid, poacher, etc.
Someone shoots a cow in Stevens County its a pro-wolf lover.
Politics baby.
My guess is if the individuals are caught and they're just a-holes we wont hear about it. If they're pro-wolf lovers you bet we'll hear about it. :twocents:

again the quote by tim coleman executive director of the kettle range conservation group "its INHUMANE and UNJUSTIFIED to put livestock on top of important predators and expect the predators not to take a bite out of them." He and probably his followers believe its the CATTLES fault for being there. I know nothing about this specific group but No question these people would shoot cows with that mindset. It could be jerk kids too or anybody, but its a mistake to think even the suggestion of enviro wackos is just a political stunt. My guess is they should be on the short list of suspects. Just look at some of the different enviro groups track record, shooting a cow would be mild compared to what they have done. If the cow was eaten by a wolf its the cows fault for being there, but if the cow got shot its the guns fault :chuckle:

Some drunk dude and his buddies are out cruising a dirt road late at night booze cruising, with a rifle sitting shotgun and he bets his buddy that he can hit that cow at 500 yards....
Oh wait it was an environmentalist making a statement. Talk about pushing your biases with no information leading to that. Was there a note saying Hi, I murdered your cow cause I love wolves and the environment............
Jumping to conclusions eh? Both my story and their story are feasible, no one knows who did it so why make an assumption like that. I am not some pro wolf dude but there is more then one way for a cow to die.

Changed the narrative a shade. :dunno:

I wished they did shoot a wolf!!!!!!!!
-
Most of the time up there, you don't see cows until they right next to the road and you sure don't see them 500 yards away late at night ;)
When these people have their livelihood under indirect attack from one group and simultaneously under direct attack from another(or the same), I wont pass judgment on their thoughts about it.
I understand about jumping to conclusions generally but for this case it really doesn't matter. There is never going to be a civil agreement reached between the two sides of the issue.

Common problem, coyotes look other worldly with a bad case, seems to apply to canis lupos

I worked on a job site hauling dirt near the Echo Lake turnoff a few years ago. All the houses were GREEN FRIENDLY. Very expensive homes. Some ECO TERRORIST group came in and burned them. I think it was 4, because they weren't green enough if I remember right.
What I'm getting at is, the eco terrorist do, do these things.

The story said that problems have increased and who they suspect, it wasn't a definitive comment. On the other hand, you guys are making a definitive statement that it wasn't pro-wolfers.

Regardless of whether it is pro-wolfer or otherwise, it is a cowardly crime and I hope those responsible get what’s coming to them. Ranchers already face enough trouble without these senseless killings.
