Just curious what fuel additive everyone is running in their powerstroke? I currently use stanadyne as recommended by my old man. Any better options?
-
I'm using Diesel Kleen in mine and I'm going to give Sea Foam a try, heard good things about it.
-
Seafoam. Period.
-
Usually Diesel Kleen, I only add some in the winter when it gets real cold and occasionally through summer. Is it really needed all the time?

That’s what I’m trying to figure out as well. Everyone I know tells me to add it every tank

My truck only has about 230k to 240k, but engine still sounds like new and I only use it now and then. I know some trucks that have over 500k but i don't know if they use it or not.
Mine is a 2003 with the 7.3
-
I don't know about the 7.3 specifically but Ive read that running biodiesel is better than any additive.
-
My buddy who’s a major Cummins fan recommend Diesel Kleen when I asked this question in regards to a 99 VE Diesel Jetta. I believe it’s helped increase mileage a few mpg. I went from 42-43 to 44-47 with occasional 52 on a long road trip. Seems to keep things cleaned out

I use lucas...its a great lube for injectors...got 260k on my cummins and have had zero engine problems....

:yeah: I put a bottle in every fuel tank fill, coach replaced my injector pump a couple years ago and recommended Lucas!
-
I run stanadyne in my Cummins every tank, but am curious to other options as well.

I run stanadyne in my 2012 cummins 6.7. Run a bottle every other tank. Don't know if it truly helps or not, but in my owners manual it makes mention about "recommendation for running fuel additives".
-
I'm currently and just recently running Lucas, after a talk with the mechanic that just replaced my injectors. He said that the new, low sulfur diesel has less lubricating qualities than the previous diesel mix. Sure hope it helps, I don't want to pay that bill again, anytime soon.

Motorcraft pm22a raises your cetane level seven points. Washington average for cetane in diesel is less than 40 and your truck most likely is recommended to run on 45 cetane. PM22A will work well in any diesel truck.
-
Here in Oregon they just put 22gals of gas in your diesel and call it good!!!!
-
Seafoam every 3rd tank

Those Jetta's got amazing mileage!

Is the sea foam your using just the regular kind? Or is there a special one for diesels? Sounds like it’s betwwen the diesel Kleen and the sea foam
-
Waste of $. Winter time only time fuel may need help. I dump cheap 2 stroke oil in every so often. Injector need lubed. New fuel doesn't do this. New trucks handle fuel better. Install a GOOD fuel filter and be done. If inj are dirty they are likely going bad regardless. :twocents:

Bio diesel has better lubricity and cleans your injectors etc. I run it any chance I get. Lots of people say better performance and mileage too.
-
I was told stansadyne.
-
So many different opinions on this stuff. We have a lot of people that come here and buy the Motorcraft cetane booster.
-
I use Diesel Kleen in my 7.3 every tank. If i skip a few tanks I can tell. It doesn't sound or feel quite as snappy. Other brand treatments may be as good or better, I don't know.
-
Where do you guys buy the stuff? Im sure local store have it but looking to buy a case at a time at a decent price.
-
Clearly lots of opinions that's great, bottom line is using something is better than nothing. I buy my seafoam at Wm. It's the cheapest that I have found.

Have you ever heard of any studies or manufacturer recommendations?

Lubri-Bore. 250k 7.3
-
my 2000 7.3 [245000] has always used standadyne. recently switched to Alliant power Ultraguard.
-
I have 280,000 on my 7.3 using the Diesel Kleen. Buying at wallmart.
-
I've used stanadyne for 15 years and like it. 7.3l.
-
stanadyne sold and the formula got changed. not the best anymore. i gave it up.

CRC Diesel Fuel Therapy. Every tank. ‘96 7.3L. MT. 190,000

Do they make the diesel kleen in a smaller bottle so you don’t need a funnel?
-
Hot Shots Secret EDT in my '01 Duramax. 1 oz for every 25 gallons of fuel and it costs less than the others.

I have to disagree with you in that. We run bio in all of our rigs at the state and if you pull a fuel system apart there is nothing put brown sludge in the filters and fuel line. Bio also attracts water. We replace more fuel filters because of water in fuel. I would love if we didn’t have to run it but it is state contract. Also we run a higher blend of bio then what you get at the pump. But in my option bio fuel is crap.
-
Colder weather has a horrible effect on bio diesel. B20 (20% BIO) is pretty much the most you want to run around here. You may be able to run a higher % in the summer time.
The DOT ferries ran high bio% & had all kinds of problems. Funny how even if you have a heater in the fuel tank you can't get it warm enough when one wall of the tank is the ferries hull.

archoil is what I have put in mine. Along with the oil additive. Saw better miles per gal since I switched

How much better mpg do you see?
-
I went on a trip with just diesel additive and it didn't change much. Then a week later I went out of town again with diesel and oil additive and it increased by 3 mpg better. I run it in almost every tank.
-
Now I can get on board with that. Admit cetane boost increases mpg slightly but not really to offset cost much. Running Amsoil in this cummins and engine does seem more free so to speak. I think injector lube is most important when talking fuel additives but good fuel filters is where all of your $$ should be being spent if ya don't have it. Cant stress this enough. This should be the FIRST thing anyone buys for their diesels! :twocents:

Maybe I missed it, but what fuel filters should a guy consider?
-
Anything but stock filtration. Newer trucks have stepped up but... For example Bosch makes most injectors in these trucks. Bosch recommends under ?4 to 3 micron? filter for their inj. Then Dodge and Ford make their trucks with 8-10micron crappy filters. Inj go bad 125k later or a bad tank of fuel. Research your own truck to see what filter the factory has blessed you with! Many upgrade lift pumps with filter system combo, like AirDogII example. This is whats on my truck currently. Like SpecialT the Wix/Napa filter base for $50 is a good upgrade as well. I put that on my old Dodge. Worked perfect. Donaldson, Wix, any spin on truck filter under 4micron is good idea with 2-3 being best!

I used to put Racor filters on my duramax but got tired of fighting with the gasket so now I use either Baldwin or AFE. Any 4 micron filter should treat you well.

If you believe it works then the marketing has done its job.

Wow that’s a nice increase! Especially with the cost of diesel now

I would only use Racor or AC delco on your Duramax or your looking for trouble. As I've stated they are a coalescing filter and your Duramax injectors are very finicky. The only other option I would consider is an aftermarket system that will trap the water before it gets to your injectors.

Been using this product in my 2002 7.3 Ford Excursion.

use to use stanadyne in my cummins for the last few years. Recently switched to Howes when the other stuff got hard to find. Been pretty happy with it and seemed to increase milage

Baldwin is the best filter hands down. Smallest micro filtering. atleast for a cummins
-
Archoil fuel and oil additive I did a lot of research on this product it’s the only thing I would recommend especially for 6L
-
I own two 7.3's, my Excursion has 500k+ miles and I don't use any additives. :twocents:
I've always used Baldwin oil and fuel filters.
