Title: Washington State OIL Permit Draws
Post by: huntnphool on June 18, 2018, 01:46:16 PM
Thought it would be interesting to see how many members have drawn OIL permits.

You may vote Yes/No and change your "No" vote if/when you draw in the future. If you vote "Yes" you can also vote for which permit/permits you have drawn.

I think all those voting need to post pics of their trophies.  That will help hold people over till the draw results get posted on the 30th, lol.

Been on a few “oil” hunts. Every one goes about them differently. Some people take the season off work and some try to get it done in a weekend. Some want the state record and some are not worried about how big it is. I would sure like a shot at a Washington Moose before they are gone. Good luck to everyone in the draw.

I've been on two OIL hunts - a friend drew sheep and my brother drew for moose. I got a goat tag before they were OIL so I have hunted all three but I'm still in the pool of point collectors.

Those who have big time points always think they will draw until you look at how many have big time points people there are and how many tags are given out.  Reality check as each point has the same odds as anyone else's point.

My dad is one of the single digits group left in top point holders for moose and goat. The odds of him drawing go down every year

How many people have drawn all 3 like time2hunt did? Can't be many.
I've drawn 3 goat tags and filled them before they were OIL.  The last was in 1996, the year they started the point system and the year before they went OIL.  I've since drawn sheep - 2014 (after 42 years of applications)  and moose - 2015 (after 38 years of applications).  Because I drew goat in 1996, I'm one point shy of max, but I intend to cash those in sometime this week!!   :chuckle:

When I was 22 years old I drew an archery sheep tag on Clemens. As ironic as it sounds, I was working in the oilfields at that time and had arranged for an extra week off, I had two weeks to hunt, on the 3rd evening after missing a giant ram I got a call, the crew on duty had a blowout, it blew all the drill stem out of the hole, they managed to close of the blowout with the blind rams. They called in Joe Bowden of Wild Well Control and called my driller, he and his crew was the most experienced and the company needed us back, like a fool I agreed to be back in North Dakota by the next evening and left immediately.  :bash:

We skidded the rig 75 feet and drilled back into the problem area to correct it all, it took 6 months to get it all done to required standards, it was normally a 60 day job back then to drill a well in that area, but we turned that hole into a 500 barrel a day well. The long and short of it, that well (the best I was ever involved with) probably made the landowner rich, I didn't get a sheep and probably never will, I probably should have quit that job and kept hunting! Oh well, back then we had our first 6 month old baby and quitting a good paying job didn't seem smart!

I was fortunate to strike OIL for myself many years later, I drew an Idaho moose tag the first time I applied. We called this bull into 60 yards, the bull was worked up and horning a sappling, I stalked to within 15 yards, he picked up his head and stepped forward into the open right in front of me, YES. One of my favorite hunts ever, I'm reliving it again as I type!

How many arrows did that bull soak up?

I wondered if anyone would count the arrows in the quiver!  :chuckle:

I hit him through the lungs, he went out to about 30 and stopped, I hit him again a few inches from the 1st arrow, he moved again to about 40 yards, I missed with 3rd arrow, nocked again and sunk a 4th arrow, then I left for 2 hours. He had only gone another 100 yards, we found him quickly when we went back. First arrow would have killed him, but if they are standing I'm shooting!

I could think of almost nothing worse for future hunter recruitment.  And to those who say, "I paid for them, they are mine I should be able to do with them as I please"...how do you feel about raffle tickets you purchase that get thrown out after the draw? Do you feel entitled to pick up those "unused" raffle tickets and give them to your kid to put in next years drawing?  Same logic.

Well since they don't give out hound permits for lions anymore I'm going to consider this an OIL unless things change. Drew this permit back in 2010, went with Dale and Brian Denney from Bearpaw outfitters and ended up killing this 140lb Tom on the 4th day. Almost didn't get to happen because of quota, female had been hit but stayed open for Tom only. Cut tracks early like 2am in the morning after driving all night and at first light let the dogs loose.... they had him treed in about 20 min about a mile up the mtn. Put one arrow in him and he came down hard. What an experience
