Anyone have a suggestion for a good crossbow for elk. There seem's to be quite a few out there.I drew the multi and this will be my first hunt with archery.I would like a good one that will not break the bank. Thanks
-
:o hope you have a doctors note...

I would assume, that if you are interested in using a crossbow you are a "disabled hunter" and have a permit to use a cross bow from WDFW?
:dunno:
-
Unless you are severely disabled you cannot hunt elk with a crossbow in WA. I have a disabled card from the state but it alone does not allow me to hunt with one and I probably wouldn't anyways because they are not accurate and the arrow does not have enough weight to penetrate unless you have a perfectly placed shot. Just my :twocents:

You can get a cross bow permit from the WDFW with a DR's note stating you have a "Upper Astrenamy" disability.
I know of a archery hunter in the Yakima area that hunts with a cross bow, and he has to renew his permit annully with a Dr's signature. Not any Disabled Hunter can use a cross bow.

That's what I thought.

There are several good choices for crossbows out there, Horton makes really good crossbows, I bought a Yukon a couple of years ago, I paid 180 bucks for it up at Bass Pro shops, it doesn't have the auto-cocker, but can buy that seperate.
It came with a peep and three pin site, I took that off and added a red-dot scope in it, it is sighted in for 30 yards and is deadly accurate out to 40 yards and that would be my limit. I also shoot 100 grain mechanical broadheads with it.
As far as the post about them not ebing accurate and the arrow doesn't have enough weight to penetrate the same could be said for compound bows, or even traditional archery gear. Shot placement is the key in any type of hunting.

This is true. My Dad has a cross bow permit and has to jump through the hoops every year.
As for them not being powerful or accurate enough, I beg to differ. I was a skeptic at first, but after my Dad going through two different cross bows I can tell you that shooting side-by-side with my Hoyt Vetrix out to 30yds, they are comparable.
He is using a Ten Pointer cross bow. The biggest problem was that most of the cross bows are sold with scopes. In this state you must use open sights, so we had to retro fit a tru-glow sight to work on his bow and mount a rear peep on it. It is just as accurate as any new bow set-up.

Bowtech has 2 good ones

i know you said not too expensive, but that TAC 15 crossbow PSE came out with looks pretty *censored*, and even better it works on an ar 15 lower, so you can get a new gun too!!!!

Precision-built performance, ground breaking engineering, and a revolutionary concept... Introducing the new TAC 15 Crossbow by PSE. Forget everything you thought you knew about crossbows, the TAC 15 sets new standards for accuracy, performance and shootability.
A marvel of innovation and engineering, only PSE could bring you the new TAC 15. Designed to fit on any AR-15 lower receiver, the TAC 15 is packed with innovative features that will have to be experienced to be believed. It all starts by incorporating the incredibly strong X Tech limbs into an extremely compact platform. The ultra-high performance twin-cam design shoots an amazing 412 fps and is capable of unprecedented accuracy. Plus, the TAC 15 converts any AR-15 quickly and easily from a gun to a crossbow!
IMPORTANT NOTE: The TAC 15 is shown with the AR-15 lower receiver and scope which are not included and must be purchased separately.

wow that tac 15 is amazing, thanks for the help guys.I do have an AR Hmmmm.
-
One of the features that makes the TAC 15 nice for folks that already own an AR15 is that they'll have the same trigger pull as on the rifle (maybe that goes without saying, but for a stick-pulling old-school guy like me it seems like a big deal). This, as I understand it, is a leap in technology. Not to mention that it launches a 485 grain, 26" long projectile at 412 fps.

I am not trying to be rude, but I don't think cross bows belong in archery seasons.

I respect your thoughts on crossbows, and 10 yrs ago I might have said the same thing. But at 56 and in a wheelchair for most of my life,I view them now as a means to my dreamingbig.Hunting is what is important, any type of legal means to get me out doing what I love to do,I'll do it.We can all disagree about something, but all hunters should be on the same side.

Whats the big deal about using a crossbow. I know nothing about it but does it have some advantage over another bow. :dunno:
-
Crossbows are legal for people who hunt under the handicap permit. I would have no problem with a disabled individual using one as long as they followed the proper procedures. As far a abled body person using one completly against it, unless they used it durring the muzzloader or modern season.

Advantages over a regular bow...
1. Arrow is always loaded and at "full" draw
2. They have a scope mounted on them
-
scopes are not legal
