How big of a buck did you get? Any areas I should concentrate on?

Never mind the naysayers.  Lots of people that’d love to help ya with information.  Not a great year to draw the tag compared to even 5 to 10 years ago, but it should still be a fun hunt. Bound to be at least 2 good bucks left in there. 😁

I might have given it a couple weeks before asking for advice about this draw.  Lotta butthurt going around right now haha. Get a map and study it. Make a gameplan. Scout. Not that complicated. Gl

I will definitely be spending time in there and I will pay my dues. People can have there opinion good or bad. I joined this site because I liked how guys helped each other out and didn't give up honey holes but helped with a general idea. Im sorry to piss folks off.

Good for you! Learn it, work it hard and have a great hunt. You will get out of it what you put into it. If you get a nice buck so much the better. Forget about those other guys. The draw game is what it is and they need to get over it. I put in for units in state and out of state I have never been too every year. If you study and do your work good people will give good information. Just be sure to return the favor when someone ask you for help down the road. There are some really good people on this site that know that unit well.....

Always gonna be some people who get mad. I drew Chewuch also. I’ll see you up there and and we will have to connect and share info. I’ve enjoyed giving out as much info as i can after drawing peaches ridge a few years back, there will be an opportunity for you to help others going forward

By mid-November, the bucks will be everywhere.  If you're not familiar with the area, you shouldn't have applied.  Sorry.
How do you get to know the area? Maybe by good people's help and drawing and learning the area for yourself. I'm sure no one puts in for and gets drawn in other states that they never hunted before and I'm sure if they did they'd ask for help too?

No need for negative comments here. One of the purposes of the forum is so hunters can help other hunters.

If you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all.

I don't need to beg for help at all either way I'll kill a big buck. Again not trying to make any one mad. It's crazy ones success makes another so jealous and angry. This will be my last response and I won't feed the negativity.  Good luck to all this hunting season. General and late hunters

There is plenty of time to learn that area. Lots of folks on here who have drawn it and will never draw it again to help a little. Every  year is different.
It is a chance at a better than average buck not a sure thing.

I have 19 quality points  benn taking the point option. Plan to try drawing starting next year.

When I draw it ,I will be in my wall tent the entire hunt.

Take the good with the bad!!!  Its a great tag, put boots on the ground and never give up!!!  Good Luck!!!  Buddy killed a stud up there last year and knew nothing about the unit!!

I had the tag in 2016, never even been in the unit before. Pretty easy to learn with a good map. I’m sure you will do fine. Don’t expect to see much scouting and definitely plan on hunting the last 10 days, unless there is a big freak snow storm.

Boss , thanks for your opinion. That young man seems to have it figured out . After almost two decades of putting in for this unit and knowing it like the back of your hand its tough to realize I have another year to wait .

We've had a place there for 51 years I drew the tag in 09, The deer you shoot in November if he's a good buck will not be shot where he lives during the summer. I go up every weekend in November just to look for rutting bucks 2 of the biggest I've ever seen one was literally within the towns city limits and the other was 3 miles out of town. Every year is different!

I,m not mad or jealous because I don't put in for late tags in the Methow in fact I wish they would do away with them(in the Methow) but thats a whole other conversation. Be positive, be confident but don't be cocky(just some advice) this herd and these Methow units have taken a real beating over the last 10 years, fires, a bad winter here and there and exploding predator numbers(lots of cats in 218!!! and I mean lots) so big bucks or even nice bucks are not behind every tree, its not the tag it once was, it will take a lot of work, weather and some luck. The local deer population in 218 and 224 are mere shadows of what they once were and the migrating herd is less than half of what it once was. Now get out there and learn the unit, plenty of time to do some scouting, its a huge unit and like some have said deer could be anywhere in there. Hope for nasty weather the end of October to push in whats left of the migrators, you will need to hunt hard, its not the "automatic" it once was for a decent to above average buck, in fact far from it. Not trying to be negative, just being realistic since you don't know the area and have probably heard stories from past "good old days" I,m just preparing you to not go in cocky or over confident, its gonna take work and time. good luck.

Good luck on your hunt.

Ignore the negative folks and be polite and you'll be amazed at how people will share.

I put in for units I've never hunted every year.   I've been lucky enough to draw several over the years and had GREAT hunts.

If someone gets all butthurt because you drew a tag without knowing the area, that's their problem.    PLENTY of good people on the site that will help discretely.

(Bugs me every year when people think you shouldn't draw a unit you're not intimately familiar with.   It's AWESOME to go hunt new territory.)

Congrats on the draw. Was super surprised to see that I was able to draw this tag as well. First quality tag I have been able to draw. Super cool you get to do it with your dad. I am definitely open to having communication and helping out as much as I can as we approach the hunt and throughout the hunt. Excited to hunt mule deer in November.

Great advice right there.

I have hunted that unit for over 30 years, while it is no where near what it once was as many who hunt and live there will tell you I think its a good draw.  I run cameras in that unit and we hunt the general season every year. I will pass along anything that might be of interest to you.

If you would like ,come on over to camp during general season and get a feel for the unit, I can show you a few areas that I would concentrate on if I had that tag.

I drew that tag in 2012, although it would have been an exellent mulie year. I shot a 140's big bodied rutting buck. Now I won't say I earned it but I was darn lucky and can say I now have one nice whitetail. I'll go back to mule deer hunting. Drew the Chewuck Mulie in 2013 and couldn't find a good shooter so settled on a big 3 point on the last day. My sister shot a 3 X 4 155 on the same year for her first deer. Wished I could have drawn it in 2012 cause we saw a lot of nice ones all over that year heading for the whitetail hunt. Good luck!

Unfortunately I wish it was just the weather that was the cause of not seeing deer right now, trust me there are many reasons and that is the least of concerns, if it was just the weather you could still get in and find big bucks in staging areas this time of year, problem is predators and an over abundance of them have and continue to whack this herd. Its going to be a long time before its even a shadow of what it once was if that even happens. Good luck to the tag holders, there is still some big boys around, hunt hard.

I was over there last weekend chasing huns and saw quite a few bucks milling around midday. Most were forks or 3s. Did see a respectable 4x3, nice and heavy, deep forks, eyeguards, not the best spread  on the WDFW land right out of town. That said I am sure folks with a late Chewuch tag are looking for something bigger. I wasn't out early in the morning or too late at night so missed the best times of day to see a nice one. I am sure there a couple big boys around so keep putting in the time!

Or if you want a true trophy I saw one rutted out 3x3 with a salamander neck and two broken G2s, and a broken eyeguard standing guard over a couple does. (pretty sure he had wooped the 4x3 who was a hundred yards away.) SCRAPPY  :chuckle:

There are 4 key's to Chewuch mulies. If one thinks about it. You can figure it out. Most wilderness area deer are out by October 25th I read. A burn w food, a year around stream, dark timber bedding near one of the 4 migration routes. I have my Chewuch honey holes and spent about 45 minutes before a 4x4 came up draw and was down during general season. My shot was only I heard opening morning.. 4 year's ago I was seeing 10 to 12 4x4 or larger bucks from 2:30-end of hunting light on November 10th on.
We ended up with a 4x5 that dressed out at 283 pounds... I have 15 points and my Dad has drawn on 3 points 2x in 8 year's. Get away from the city and and look for areas like mentioned. I hunt between 3,500 and 6500 feet.
If there's a strong enough will there's a way until none left. Every year I hunt places people drive right by up. I hunt 1/2 to a mile away from road's and they have the feed, water and bedding area's.. Scout scout scout and cams find the does in those areas and the bucks are hiding nearby. Especially during the rut hunt.
We hunt other western state's and I look for the same quality area's.
I call biologists and game warden, butcher's etc. Then start a research on Google Earth and more.. Narrow down the unit to 6 to 10 holes. Hunt from daylight to day's end. I put a 800 miles on truck scouting before opening day or a solid week.

Sorry for the wait boys, we got there on 10th and went straight to the woods as soon as we got into the area we seen a nice but tall, wide and decently heavy chasing 2 does around. He has small crabby forks up front with good forks in the back. We ended up passing on this guys 330yrds away. He gave us acouple oppurtunities at shots. He ended up being the best buck we saw all week. We out smarted ourselves thinking that hes rutting but not everything we want and this is just the first hour of bring there. Well we didnt see strong rut action like that again in the hills. Farmers fields they were running around everywhere. Well my grandma's birthday was the 18th and her health hadnt been the best so we wanted to be there for her and dad ended up shooting a decent 3x3 and I 4x4. Both younger deer but good deer. I was hoping for better with this permit but I can't complain. We got deer, had a great time in the woods with my dad and made it home for grandma's birthday. I'm writing this post with my phone and if I can figure out how to post pictures I'll put our deer up. Thanks for all of your support and encouragement. I hope 2019 everyone has a good year and there's better weather up there. Lol

I'm sorry the herd is in such bad shape.  There was a time where this was an incredible draw.

Me and my dad ran into you and your dad right after you got your buck off the hill and down to your truck. You were the first tag holder I had seen with a buck. Congrats again man and hopefully there is more snow for future tag holders.

Yes please show that brute. Years ago I was in Thompson's meats in Twisp before they closed shop and they had an enormous mule deer hanging. I did not ask what the hanging weight was but it absolutely dwarfed the 140 hanging weight whitetail I brought in. I thought it was over 200 pounds hanging. Very impressive.

Years ago I shot one that weighed 325 field dressed with the legs cut off. I did not realize how big it was until I tried to pull it out of a ditch it was lying in. The antlers were not much to look at, a wide two by three. It was obviously a regressive rack when you consider the size of the buck.

That’s how this buck was. I thought he was a younger 2x3 and didnt fully understand what I had shot until I walked up to him. Wow factor was in full effect. Def a regress buck. Wish I would have had him aged.

Here is a pic of the rack. It will take some time to find a picture of him hanging.
