After 15+ years finally drew a rifle tag for the Entiat. Saying that im excited is an understatement. Any one that has hunted this tag or knows more about the area in November thats willing to share information would be great. I have been in there many time i know the are and plan to learn it more but like most people havent been in during this time of year. Please send PM's if your willing to help out and good luck out there this year.

Lucky dog. I had same points but no luck for me. Should be an awesome hunt.
-
I cant wait already planning trips over
-
Congrats.
-
Congrats. My dad pulled one too. I’ll be up there with him most of the hunt. Been waiting to get another go since I had the archery tag in 08. Cannot wait. Best of luck to ya.
-
Wife had the tag 3 years ago, it was a great hunt, lots of bucks
My recomendation, go as late as you can in the season, if you can hunt the 15th on, that's the best time IMO at least when I actually draw, I won't start hunting 15th unless a monster happens to walk out :chuckle:
Have fun :bfg:

:yeah: drew last year. good time ! Manage expectations - 160 is a monster. 170 = unicorn.

Thanks everyone hope to see you up there johnnyaustin44!!!

Congrats.
I was going to put my wife in for points only, decided Entiat hunt was basically the same thing...until she was selected :yike:

180" bucks are in pretty much every drainage. Should be a slam dunk :chuckle:

Drainage’s?!?!? Man I was hoping they were around every corner... you know near the road.

I was trying not to let them know QUITE how easy they were to find. SHHHH

Oklahoma Gulch..

Be prepared to be disappointed. I would love the tag but there is so much pressure early season. I bow hunt it hard and will say that it holds small resident bucks. Pray for something crawling out of the nearly stuff.
-
Biggest non typical I’ve ever seen near the mud creek road! Hunt hard and you’ll do good!

Much different come late season if there is snow and the migration is on. :twocents:

Lots of people have been saying the quality is down up there which I’m sure it is. Just need to be realistic on expectations and soak it in you get the chance to hunt muleys in the rut. And there’s always a chance of seeing a giant deer but it’s definitely not loaded down with monsters anymore.
-
The hunt really depend on snow conditions; hunt the upper end if little snow and the Potato/Mud/Crum and the Columbia River breaks if winter snow arrives early. Remember the rut is on; if you see does you will find the mature buck. 4x4 and chains will be useful but probably not necessary.
Have fun and don't shoot until you see the one you want.
-
Pray for snow.

Can you ride four wheelers on any of the FS roads in that area? Just thinking if conditions are poor/unsafe - can a guy use an atv?
-
Usually the roads are open for licensed vehicles but seasonal closures occur.
The Entiat Ranger District phone is 509-784-4700 (call before going).
-

No, as of last time I inquired about the same thing, the FS does not recognize played OHV's. They a re e only allowed on roads posted for "Dual Use" from the management plan, and the management plan is not in effect.

Isn't that statement contradictory? :yeah: :chuckle:
You are correct, the F.C. does not recognize plated WATV's.............what they wont tell you is, there is no law on the books that states a person cannot use them on FS roads (in this area)........There are ways for the FS to do this, but have not been accomplished by the FS yet/and or properly. ;)
Call em up and ask them what law you will be breaking if you were to ride up there. (ie; what CFR will they be referenccing your ticket to.) ;) ;) ;)
PS, have fun on a great hunt, GL

I agree and here is the response from the emails I sent to the FS.
I'm seeking information on OHV use on Forest Service Roads. I am looking to find out if it is legal to use a OHV, (side-by-side, quad) that has a license plate on the forest Service Roads.
I have been receiving conflict and information, as to whether it is allowed, or legal. Some say it is legal to use on for service road as long as the OHV is has a license plate. Others say it is not usable at all on Forest Service Roads unless it is Highway legal.
What is the position for the forest service?
It is currently not legal to use any OHV / ATV, even street legal or with license plate, on most Forest Service roads. There are some exceptions, mainly on the Tonasket Ranger District. See link below for a list of trails and roads that are open. But note that most may not be suitable for a side by side. Best to contact Ranger District where you want to go for drivability and condition of specific trails and roads on the list. There is currently a travel management plan under review which may open up more roads to OHVs.
https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd521079.pdf
Thank you for response, I have another question.
I'm going to paraphrase when I ask this question,
How is it that the forest service does not allow for use of a OHV that has been deamed street legal by the state of Washington?
All requirements laid out by the state of Washington to classify an OHV as street legal, and the forest service still says no, why or how?
Pete Miller
The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest is firmly committed to ensuring forest access for both Wheeled All-Terrain Vehicle (WATV) and other motorized vehicles. However, Washington State law and established Forest Service policy require National Forests to explicitly designate which forest roads are open to WATVs. The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest continues to work closely with user groups through its Travel Management Planning process to determine where WATVs can be ridden, with an eye towards balancing access needs with the risk of excessive resource impacts to the forest. Working jointly with user groups and conservation organizations, the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest identified 350 miles of current National Forest System roads that could be opened to WATVs without causing unacceptable resource damage. These roads were added to the Forest's Subpart B Travel Management analysis. A final decision on the associated Motor Vehicle Use Map is expected in late 2017. If the current proposal is adopted those 350 miles of road would be open to WATVs for use in the summer of 2018. All other system roads would be closed to WATVs. In the meantime, the forest has 243 miles of roads designated for "dual use" where WATVs can be ridden.

Interesting. Thanks for all the background info. I will contact the entiat RD to see if they will have their plan/decision by this summer.

They are 10 years over due on having the travel management plan in full effect.

Im not to worried about what i will see in there between now and the end of October. Scouting will be all about learning roads and draws. As far as finding deer before my hunt the only deer i will care about will be does. I have been fortunate to help my old man on a late hunt and the deer i want are not even in the area right now.
-
So far i couldn't be happier with the support i have received with this hunt and its only been a few days. I plan to head over the weekend after the 4th to find a few camping spots and put my eyes on a few draws i have memorized off google maps. Im going all in, i have canceled all other hunts and all my spare time has been put into studying for this hunt. Reading story's from past hunts on every forum there is, researching mule deer rutting activity, researching mule deer migration, studying maps, and looking at pictures of good mature bucks from every angle. to say im starting to obsess is an understatement. November feels like years away.
-
Stand at the top of a hill YELL throw a few rocks and GET READY🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌🍖🍖🍖🍖
-
Congrats to all who drew...Looking forward to seeing pictures.
-
Some good early growth on this little guy. Getting excited.
-
U get up there and you will find lots of people willing to help during the hunt
-
Pray for snow and u will learn to hate the fog. Have a plan for the fog, it ruins lots of the mid elevation areas. Take chains even without getting snow. Some roads are worse in the sloppy clay mud. Pm if u want to.
-
Thanks to all for the input i will keep this updated hopefully to end with a pic of a nice buck down. Heading over after the 4th to learn more draws and update my notes.

TJ20,
Congratulations on drawing and good luck to you Sir. I'll be in the area with a tag as well.

thats funny. Not like it used to be up there your lucky to see a 180 in the middle to end of December. :bash:

Should be interesting since it is on fire now
-

SAY WHAT ? Fire would probably make it better, All the deer are not there now anyway.
-
dosent look big yet so lets hope they get it under control. I will be over there this weekend i will update on what i find out
-
Just hope all the winter range doesn't get wiped out.
-
Calling for calmer weather down in town the next few days, been a windy son of a gun for a few. Hopefully that will slow it down
-
Don't worry about the lack of resident deer in the Entiat. 80% of the herd is migratory; spend the summer in the higher, greener country far up valley. Your challenge will be keeping your finger off the trigger until you locate the buck you really want on your wall and in the freezer. GMU 247 benefits from higher elevation snow to get the migration into the wintering areas.

First scouting trip was a success. found a couple good camp spots and spent lots of time on the hill. Like many said not a tone of deer but i didn't expect to see a whole bunch. Over all seen 35 deer 10 of those were bucks. Most small bucks except one very large 3 and a really wide heavy 2x3 with eye guards. Had a little skunk buck up to the truck that was interesting. All in all i think i know where i will be come November 1st. Ill follow up with some pics in a bit.
On a side note does anyone know if you can ride quads on the roads over there?
-

Not legally.
-
Just a few from the trip the little one was still wet and wobbly in the knees super cool.
-
Starting to think i need a better camera or something besides my phone lol. Pretty nice 3 we found definitely not a shooter but for a general season hunter he should make the list. Along with Pepe Le Pew that tried to spray me truck.

Unless they are registered for public roads and the logging roads are open for vehicle traffic. I can’t say I love them on the logging roads but they can be legal now that the state of WA allows quads, dirt bikes, side by sides, etc. to be registered for public roads.

But the Forest Service still doesn't allow them to be used.

Nor do they have a law that says they are illegal. ;)

I don't doubt that. I only know that they will tell you ATV's are not allowed, if you were to ask. I guess, just don't ask. :dunno:
-
So it not legal unless its registered for public roads, Forest Service still dosent allow them, but there is no law saying you cant. Looks like i should just roll the dice :dunno:
-
I don't think it makes a difference if they're "street legal" or not. The forest service will tell you they're not legal either way.

So at this point i planned to have many many more trips over the mountains to scout and well we all know why i haven't been over lately. Little bummed i have been doing most of my scouting on line with a birds eye view. I just got done reading an 18 page thread about this hunt from 2013. i really cant believe i read all 18 pages but after page 4 i was making popcorn and forgot all about my hunt as that was to good LOL. Glad i have all 20 days off so i can use the first week to scout the draws i have been planing to hunt.
Might head over in the general season to scout areas just not sure i want to experience the chit show. Whats your thoughts.

When I had the tag in 2016 I spent a couple days during modern firearm driving around to get to know the area (never been there before) and best advice I will give is find the Does during that time and go back about two or more weeks later :twocents:
-
Thanks Guys um super stocked hoping to get a good one im fortunate to have the hole 20 days sucks i will be spending most of it solo but thats the cards i get to play so im playing this hand to the last bet!!

If you "Scout" in September or October, you are learning roads and the country. Don't expect to see that many deer or bucks. The Chelan County heard is at least 80% migratory so they spend all summer back in the Cascades where the browse is best. They will arrive when the does comes in season (migrate earlier) and the high country snow encourages them to move down valley.
If snow arrives late expect the big bucks to be at the western end of 247 and if we get a lot of snow hunt the eastern end even the breaks above the Columbia.
-
Do you know how many different places you can hunt? 20 days isn't enough :yike: have fun.
-
Im getting exited. I was literally remembering sitting at my desk waiting for a the results to come out. searching every way possible for a back door result. finally i found something that looked promising so i instantly reached out to my buddy and had him check his. He stated that it was looking like he drew quality bull and mine was showing quality deer. At this point we were confident we had our tags. As soon as the results were there i reached out again saying it was right and I drew the Entiat tag. He looked real quick and responded with holy *censored* i got the !@#$$% tag. (Sorry got permission to post the pic just not the area). Super stoked i reached out to my cousin and he replied with i also got a Quality bull permit for @#$%^ unit. As i have been waiting for my hunt to start they left for theirs. I would say opening weekend treated them great. Im more excited for my hunt now than ever. Here is their bulls from last weekend.
-
:yike:
Holy Hell, those are nice bulls cant wait until this weekend to get out and hunt my Bethel bull tag

If I get a free weekend I'll come over and glass for you.
-
Let me know if you can make it i will be camping up mud creek if the spot is open when i get there stay straight once the gravel starts ill be the first camp on the left before you get to the end if the large field on the right. If that spot is taken then take the first left just past the field and i will be camped to the right
-
That area has been burned, you'll have to get up above the gravel pit to get out of the burn.
Good luck!
Still doing rehab, might be over by opening weekend.
-
I know it burned up Potato Creek a ways i didn't think it made it all the way down to Mud Creek, With that said i haven't been over since the fire started so any and all input on what actually burned ease of the river would be helpful. all i have to go on is what i see on OnX Maps.
-
That area didn't burn. We were up there earlier this year. The first turn left after the pavement just past that house and the cattle guard was shut down for the burn.
-
I believe he is referring to the gravel pit in potato creek and has it confused with mud creek?!?!
-
Thats what i was thinking thanks for the input

It was trying to snow last Sunday but it’s looking warm this time around. looks like the rain forecast was downgraded for this weekend which should be good for the roads.
Remember, shoot the first buck you see. :chuckle:

5 years ago opening day I shot a 205 inch buck in there . One of the biggest I got . I helped people hunt almost every year after that. The last 2 years I seen a decrease in big bucks due to the fire and the general season after the fire. there was a day when there was 170 on every corner. Now u have to hunt a lot harder. U will do good !!! Pray for snow and belivebn ur glass

What about predators they have more effect I believe than the fire
-
Pray for snow, but it's not a requirement. There are good respectable bucks floating around. Glass, glass and more glass. Then hike and shoot!
-
I don’t believe predators killed off the big bucks lol I think it was the guys in the orange vest lol. But if u go back 2 years ago maybe 3 now there was over 5 200’inch bucks and a hand full of 190’inch bucks shot-and countless 170s shot out of the eniat unit its self. When the fire hit it pushed a lot of deer down and the deer actually stayed down low because of a food source. General season rolled around and wiped a lot of deer out big time. I know bigs bucks get shot during general season but not that many in the same unit .So if u could imagine that there was a lot more legal bucks readily available for every jo shmo with a tag. That hurt the heard bad. I talked to seven game warden that year and they confirmed that there was a big harvest rate that year. So now we are living the after affects of that one awesome general season lol. But don’t get me wrong some one needs to kill those cougars too
-
I will pm u some pics of the bucks . The peanut gallery might get ahold of them 😂😂

But don’t get me wrong some one needs to kill those cougars too
SPOT ON. :twocents:

this will be a great thread to watch when the whopper hits the dirt

I have hunted this country for 45 plus years. I have been lucky enough to draw this tag twice 06 and last year. Herds have been hurt by fire and hard winters. You should find a decent buck but the 180'class bucks are hard to find. Potatoe creek had fire again and I believe it was closed during the regular season. I went over before the opener and seen more bear than deer. Good luck

I will pm u some pics of the bucks . The peanut gallery might get ahold of them 😂😂
sounds good
Can't wait

anyone hear how Throttlejockey is doing??? Hope he's patterning a monster and looking to pull trigger soon.
-
I believe I talked to him up there on Friday, if he's driving a dodge diesel. He said he had been seeing some deer. Some smaller 4 points and a few bucks acting rutty. But hadn't pulled the trigger yet.

Anyone know if the big deadfall has been cleared away from Mud Creek?
Thanks,
Al

That's the reason to carry your own saw. Or get trapped and have to wait for help. Same problem towards Jr Point.

Had one. It was more than I wanted to devote the time to so I went around.

As what we do is more about the hunt than the kill i will take you through my hunt i dont have time to type it all right now but here is a start
Day 1 i didnt get out the 31st like i wanted to so i left early the first. The plan was to dump the camper and head hunting when i got there. I didnt even have the camper off the truck and i had already had a smaller 16-17 inch 3x3 and about the same frame 3x4 in the glass. when i pulled into my camp i had seen 11 deer already and 3 bucks. To say i was excited was an understatement. I decided to set camp up as its only day one and i didnt want to come back and have to deal with it. Finally camp was set up rifle in the truck next to the spotter and i was off. I made it maybe 1000 feet from camp and spotted some deer. 8 more deer on the hill all does. I figured i would head to an area i was told about i didnt scout yet and see what it was all about. I didnt see much going in but i also didnt spend much time glassing just learning the roads. Finally got to the top and decided to get the spotter out and glass a big basin. Glassed up a couple does when all the sudden there is a grey looking deer. Thats a buck i thought. As he picked his head up i could see he was a good buck. I watched him bed down i could see he was about 24 - 25 inch wide 4x4 with eye guards. He had very small forks and was spindly so i decided i was going to let him be and move on. finished my day and seen a few more deer nothing to excited about. when i got to camp i was wondering if i made the right decision as i had never passed a good buck in my life. The decision was made and the fact that he was in a hole not visible from any road and he was in the presence of does i figured if needed i could find him back if i needed to.

Day 2 woke up freezing i guess the battery went bad in the camper and the heater wouldnt start. Decided to head up to some flats and do some hiking through some finger draws i scouted in august. Seen some deer on the way in but again small bucks and nothing to get excited about. I got to the spot parked the truck and headed in hunting as i do blacktails. Moving 20 or 30 yards and glassing. about a half a mile in i spotted a deer another doe. as i was glassing around i just got a glimps of a decent buck crossing one of the fingers but i didnt get a good look at him. i waited for the doe to follow and made a move to the top of that ridge so i could get a better look. Glassing around found the doe then another doe, then a 1 x 2 then a 2 pt but no sign of the larger buck. finally he showed again just a glimps as he crossed the next finger and still not a good look. now i had to wait about 5 minutes for all the deer to follow. Hoping he didnt go far i hurried to where he crossed now glassing the next finger ridge trying to find him. No deer at all? I lowered the binos and seen the 2 pt about 60 yards in front of me feeding. as i looked around they were all withing 70 yards milling around feeding with no clue i was there. I still couldnt find the bigger buck when all the sudden 50 yards in front of me he walked out. i could see 4 solid points and decent mass! Safety came off.. he turned and looked at me and i could see he wasnt very wide maybe 18" and no eye guards. I decided to wait them out and let them all feed over the next finger before i backed out. A buddy showed up at camp that afternoon so we decided to go up high and spend more time behind the glass glassed out more deer but again uneventful in the evening.

At the end of day 2 i was joined in camp by a good buddy and my cousin. We decided to head to a completely new area and spend the day behind the optics. Glassed a couple spots and didnt really find much. After hiking down a finger into a deep draw we spotter deer right away. A couple does in the bottom. After about 30 minutes of picking everything apart we found more deer. They were a ways off in a slot that isnt really accessible. Doable for the right buck though. When we got the spotters on the deer we saw 2 average bucks that were locking up and pushing each other around pretty good. As we were watching these guys do their thing we spotted another buck he was a pretty good 4 but decided he wasnt big enough to go after so we backed out to another draw. Same thing as we walked out a small finger to get a good glassing spot we seen deer. This draw was full of deer. We spent an hour glassing this draw and seen over 25 deer all in different groups. As we were glassing through i here theres a good buck. he walked out of the thick bottom and stood in the open looking around. He was a nice 3x4 but again not the buck i wanted to shoot so we left there and went back up high. Spent the rest of the day glassing over tons of country but again didnt glass up much to talk about.

How many points did you burn?

Day 4 is when my hunt ended. Again i probably could have held out for a larger buck. There was no real weather in the forecast and when you find the one you want you just know. There isnt a single regret in my body for harvesting this buck with great people. Like i said we do this for way more than the kill and i had a great time even though it was only 4 days. seen over 200 deer 30 to 40 bucks passed 4 bucks that would make any hunter with a general tag ecstatic and made some good memories i will be talking about for years. We found him bedded with some does mid day after seeing many other deer and some smaller bucks. We watched him for a few minutes trying to decide if i should shoot or not when a doe had enough and decided she was done. He wasnt going to let her walk off alone and got up to follow. Thats when i said im taking him. one shot and down he went. If you have never hunted rutting mule deer your missing out. This was an experience i cant wait to do again.

I was the first time in my life the wind was blowing so hard it sounded like a diesel!!! Hours and hours behind the glass and it ends like this lol.
-
that a nice buck throttle!! It doesn't matter how it ends, you have a nice buck in camp and the time in the woods to remember..

Nice Throttle!! Looks like about a 150ish inch buck?

Isnt that how it works. Hours of glassing, miles of hiking and find a good buck 130 yards from the road. haha
Awesome.

Definitely how it goes sometimes. We're all due a road buck at some point in our careers. Mine hasn't come yet. Good job capitalizing on the opportunity and great buck!
