Title: Teanaway quality tag
Post by: Duckslayer89 on June 24, 2018, 06:12:12 PM
Drew as my second choice for archery late buck. I have some ideas on where to go but any tips would be appreciated. I also drew a big bend buck tag but it’s the same dates as the quality tag

I honestly would hunt the big bend tag. You probably would have a better chance at shooting a better buck.  :twocents:

I have some experience with the 335 unit but have never hunted big bend. Do you have experience up there?

I know nothing about big bend, but it is next to the colville rez and they have some massive deer on their land?? Maybe hunt around the boarder?  Good luck Anthony

no but have lived in the teanaway and hunted it for years. Put in one time for the late teanaway muzzy deer tag. I was very disappointed. First and last time I applied for it.

wish you the best...
what I learned; its no Entiat or Okanagan late tag for sure!!

I had Teanaway late archery tag last year. Aside from passing on a 1x2 and small 2point muley bucks early in the season, the tag was a bust.
11 days straight hunting, saw few deer. No rut action observed my entire time, probably rut was over.
Covered area from 97 up to Iron Creek interior, then from camp off the FR9738 Blue creek side to Teanaway river road then hiked in Dickey creek a few days. Dickey Creek is where I spotted the 2 wolves on different days near the end of my hunt. Came across fresh cougar tracks, next to sets of deer tracks, in the snow on several days.
Saw more elk than deer. Too bad didn't have multi season elk, had close shots at cows on several days.
Perhaps the prior late rifle tags cleaned out the mainframe 4x4 & lesser bucks.

The Dickey creek gate area I went in/out several miles, averaging 8-10 miles per day per Onynx & GPS.
Got up high on ridges, glassed AZ-optics style for a couple hours and still hunted down the ridgelines. Didn't spot any decent bucks in 30 hours of morning glassing.
Last week of the season I had perfect hunting weather; fresh snow each night for quiet moving and cold temps during the days. I have never put as many miles on the boots, before dawn until after shooting hours, as was the case for this hunt. At least I was comfortable and warm in my wall tent with wood stove.

Statistics for this tag last year had zero harvest for 10 late archery tags issued. I was so hopeful since I had done well in this area for general rifle season in years past. Disappointed but hunted well, usual camp set up was great.
at best, small bucks were spotted on lower private lands as I drove up Teanaway river road to Dickey creek gate in the dark.
The worst thing about the tag, drew as 2nd choice and busted my point build up since my late Gardner tag drawn in 2013.

I am going to agree with a lot of what has been said on this thread but also say that unit tag has some serious potential. Teanaway is certainly a unit that is struggling like most of the state because of the predators but don't get discouraged because there are some serious monsters in this unit. Yes the Archery tag is late and the Rut could be over like a few referenced. I have hunted this unit for years and love it, there are plenty of deer just gotta find them.

Put some effort into the hunt don't get discouraged and enjoy the tag!

My dad drew the quality rifle buck tag for this unit. He can’t get around very well after his recent foot surgery ( and over 70). Hopefully he’ll beat last last years dismay reports

I’ve spent more time in 335 than any other. Granted it’s been during the general deer and then in late November-December elk hunting as a master hunter. Would be happy to help out if you pm me. There’s probably better sources on here than me but I would be more than happy to share what I know. My uncle had the tag 3 years ago and shot the wrong deer (still a nice 4 point).

Not to be a downer here just being honest. I drew this tag last year we hunted it for 5 days and saw 3 does and 1 nice buck in someone’s yard. We saw some nice bulls and lots of bones lots and lots of deer bones. I even know 2 guys who drove around for 4 hours with spotlights just hopeing to see something to keep spirits up but only saw elk and wolves. We walked up mountains we hit the draws we wore ourselves to the point of going East to hunt somewhere else. Maybe we didn’t get enough snow, maybe the wolves ate them maybe we suck. I’m not sure but in my opinion that unit not a quality unit anymore. I’ve tagged out every year for 20 + years so I don’t think I suck😄 I hope your hunt is much better and you knock down a whopper. Just have a back up plan

Coach, if I remember your teaniway posts from the past, then I don’t think you and your boy are going to need much luck.

It’s hard to put stock in bad reports from previous years, unless the one giving the advice stayed to the last drip of light on the last day! News flash boys (and girls) if you don’t learn how to pluck Mulies out of a wolf infested basins, then you better quit now! They live in damn near every unit west of  Snoqualmie.

I hunt this area in modern and actually got a pretty nice buck this year but never felt like putting in for this unit due to alot of the migratory area seem to be on private land so it can make that late hunt challanging and also dependent apon weather were latley we have had mild  winters possibly  not pushing the deer as early just my take

Very little snow and some deer are pretty high.  Saw a buck along 97 North of Blewett Pass last night around 3,800'.

Saw 2 small bucks and 7 doe on private land the first day. Zero  tracks in some of the areas I was planning on hitting with fresh snow. Found some tracks up a random skid road by standup creek. Followed them up to the top and jumped 4 doe. I was surprised at the lack of deer sign. Did have a herd of elk at 50 yards on public ground

Was over Blewett twice yesterday, lots of tracks in the snow from deer moving.
