So I guess it's started. I'm not sure if it's really sank in yet. tried to buy my tag today and they wouldn't let me yet so I'm still nervous :chuckle: :chuckle:. Anyway's I figured I would start this thread so I can have somewhere for scouting updates and of course recap my hunt. But most importantly I would like to see moose pictures! Preferably Aladdin moose but any Washington moose is welcome. Dead or alive! Only 3 months until it's go time!
Also any tips or info is more than welcome and vastly appreciated

Don't miss! :chuckle:

Grundy. I have been watching 3 bulls in the Aladdin for the past 4 years. I will have no problem privately sharing the location. Two are smaller and one would be a last few days bull that I can send a two year old pic of. The third is a toad with triple brows. I'll pm my phone number and we should talk in the next weeks or so.
-
Awesome  Congrats drawing the tag and good luck :IBCOOL:

will be following this! Good luck on the hunt! From my experiences on the good draw hunts the summertime scouting and anticipation is the funnest part! Because once its go time its over in a blink of an eye!

Now is the time to practice field judging Moose! Shiras ears are about 30inches tip to tip when spread out. If you can see an ear on each side. Ears are 8-10 inches long. Use those measurements to compare with overall width and paddle width.
Here is a pic for you to practice on. (I know and can measure exact measurements if you want after you guess)
-
Oh and double (at least) fronts are huge if your worried about score. There are some stud bulls that are single front tho also
-
Tagging along buddy! Super pumped for You! Congrats again on the killer draw :IBCOOL:

Congrats! You are going to have a great time. :IBCOOL:

Congrats Grundy...really happy for you and happy to see that the HuntWa mod/admin OIL deal we have with WDFW is still holding up. Really looking forward to watching this play out.

Huge congrats. Had the late hunt right next door in 15. Hunt hard
And hopefully the snow doesn’t become too much of problem.
They will often be bunched up so always be looking for the bulls

Congrats on a great tag Grundy. I've got a few moose pics to contribute to your thread :).
-
It's a perk. Next draw cycle I will be ready for my tag. Combination of time and post count. I'm thinking elk instead of moose since im taking advantage of my one free sponsered hunt eith ambush outfitters. Come to think of it....since I'll be toting my one free rifle ( that I'm loving! ) from rbros its shaping up to be a pretty good looking 2019!

Honestly, I'm worried about moose numbers and so right now my goal is a paddled moose. We'll see if it changes after my scouting trips. I would love to kill a giant but I would kick myself if I passed on an average bull then never saw another. But I'll probably change my mind a hundred times. I'm already a nervous wreck :chuckle:

Tag!

Congratulations. Looking forward to updates on how this goes.
-
Tag. Young bulls are delicious, like a 500lb spike elk :)
-
If it has brow tines drop it...
Buy yourself a bull magnet call and practice making weird groaning noises with your tongue pressed against the roof of your mouth..
Most of all have fun. Don't succumb to the oil tag stress.

I believe Bob33 has killed a WA moose.
Dale has killed a moose.
Lokidog killed a sheep.
Boneaddict killed a moose.
Ridgerunner was a mod and he must have been doing an amazing job at it because he’s had a sheep and a moose tag.
I’m almost taking myself into believing what I initially meant to be a joke.

Yep. I have a MS deer tag so I figured I would pack it for deer and if the opportunity allows I'll use it for my moose.

Grundy congrats on the draw, I hope you have a great hunt! I have not been lucky enough to draw Washington but I have hunted Alaska for moose. One of the biggest things I learned was to be patient with the calling, they will come but sometimes it’s from a long ways and it takes a while. I would actually get up at night and cow call from my tent just to pull bulls in for the next morning!
-
wasn't expecting moose on this cam, it's low elevation. My "moose cam" is still soaking.

Nice! Always love surprises.

Heading over this weekend for my first scouting trip. Wish I could've got over sooner but I've been busier than heck this past month. My main goal this trip is to cover ground and get more familiar with the unit. Hopefully I'll get some pictures to share. Can't wait. Thinking about leaving Friday after work.

Scouting update: I got over here yesterday evening and within an hour of hitting the woods I spotted a moose. It was a cow but I figure that's a good sign lol. Today I've pretty much just been trying to cover as much ground as possible trying to familiarize myself with the unit. It was going great until I got a flat tire up in the woods just south of the Canadian border and had to drive all the way back to colville to get it fixed. So that set me back time wise. I've spotted the one moose ,a bunch of turkeys, even more rabbits, a couple grouse, but zero deer (other than fields and along the highway). Having fun learning a new area. I've only been in the unit once before ( other than driving by it a bunch going over tiger pass). Is it October yet?

Following along, can't wait till the end.

Found a bull last night right before dark. Not a big guy but he had single eye guards and he had paddles. He was fairly wide for his size. Sorry for the poor picture quality but he was 130 yards away and it was with my phone.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180721/4b18c60b4d8b828ed7ef5508051125ff.jpg)

Sweet. Enjoy the ride man.

I checked my "moose cam" today, had 3000 ish pics of 2 small muley bucks, 1 doe w/ fawn and 2 moose bulls.
Unfortunately a bear or something got 12 feet up the tree and twisted my cam around.
I did notice one bull had a good amount of ticks, not life threatening, but quite a few!
no pics good enough to share :'(

Back in Colville. Getting ready to head up in the hills for a weekend of scouting. Last trip I mainly covered the unit learning the road system. This trip I'm going to go to the spots I have narrowed down and burn some boot leather. I'm also going to put up some trail cams. I'll be packing my bow starting tomorrow just in case I stumble into a buck. That would top off a great weekend of scouting. Hopefully I'll have more pictures to share this time. It's supposed to be significantly cooler than last trip.

My boys and I were doing a little scouting/grouse hunting yesterday out Aladdin, and we stumbled upon this guy. PM me if you would like the exact location, and I'd be more than happy to share it with you.

It was a good scouting trip. Ended up seeing two moose, a bear, a bunch of deer, a lot of turkeys and grouse. One of the moose was a bull and he was an opening morning shooter. Tall, big paddles and doubled brow tines. I got to really pick apart my chosen hunting area and learned a bunch. I set up a few cameras although I think the majority of my pictures will be moo cows :chuckle:. Thanks to some good tips from members on here I got to check out some other good looking areas. Feeling pretty good about my upcoming hunt. Less than a month from go time! I took a couple of pictures of the bull but they look horrible on the camera. I'll see what they look like once they are on my computer and Hopefully they are good enough to post here. Thank you to everyone who has helped me out. I really appreciate it and Hopefully I'll be able to fill my once in a lifetime tag.

Maybe wait for his story to come out and then give him a temporary ban as punishment!

I don't know anything either but I do know when I was with Jackelope on his goat hunt he was going to get to cell service as fast as possible even if that meant stopping at camp and boiling water for me to eat a mountain house so I had energy to make it out to cell service. He wasn't going to leave me behind but he wanted to get to cell service to update everyone.
I'm guessing that notched tag is a moose tag and he has his work cut out for him to get that thing processed and then get out to good cell service. He is not the kind of guy to drag this out or toy with our emotions like some members, @PlateauNDN comes to mind.

Really I was just trying to get to the spruce for a burger and beer before they closed.

Oh man this is awesome. Cannot wait to see your pics. I drew a unit 1-3 moose tag in ID for the first 15 days of November. Similar path of looking the unit over, but you've seen more moose! I've only see a cow and calf standing in Lake PDO! Too bloody thick to glass anything up. Hopefully better in a month. Good for you.

Finally home! I'll type up a summery of our trip. In the mean time here are some of the trail cam pics I got.
-
This camera I believe I have a picture of a small wolf. There is a picture of a little buck for comparison.
-
The trip started with my dad waking me up at 3 am Friday morning. A quick pot of coffee and we were on the road heading towards Unit 111. We made good time and got to our camp site around 10:30 am. We set up camp and relaxed as we waited for a couple buddies to show up. Once they showed up and got settled in we went for an evening drive. We didn't see much but I got to show them the main area we would be focusing on. Although we did find a calf moose carcass. Saturday morning we headed out in the same area and came across a shooter bull with a cow. He had good palms and triple eye guards on one side. He definitely would be dead if it were season. About 15 minutes later we had a wolf cross the road in front of us. He stopped on a spur road long enough for us to get a good look at him and then he was gone. He was huge. It was also pretty close to the trail camera that I think I got a picture of a wolf on. After that we shot a couple grouse and then went to check my cameras. Near one of the cameras (the one near where we saw the wolf) we found a dead bull moose. Judging by what was left of his antlers he was probably a 1.5 year old. After that we checked another camera and found that I had pictures of bull moose and one was for sure a shooter. So far the first full day of scouting was a success. We even saw 17 deer that day. Towards evening one of my dads brakes started squealing and we figured there was a rock stuck in it. Sunday morning we went to the same area. By now the squealing was real bad and turning to grinding. We did see a small bull moose but then headed back to camp. My dad and his buddy headed to Colville to see if there was any shops open on Sunday. Meanwhile me and my other buddy went and checked out a different part of the unit. We found lots of moose sign but no moose. We headed back to camp to check on my dad. They were there and said nothing was open except the parts shop. So they bought the parts and tools and we ended up fixing the brake in camp. It turned out the brake cylinder had got stuck out. We went out that evening in better spirits and a sense of relief. We ended up seeing 4 deer but no moose. Monday morning we woke up and it was game time! No more waiting. No more scouting! It was finally here. We head out to where we have bean seeing most of the moose. It is dead. we are not seeing anything. Then we see a truck parked right where we saw the big bull Saturday. I'm starting to get nervous. We go out into a clearcut and there were three guys already posted up where I had seen a couple smaller bulls. Turns out they were the antlerless moose tag holders. so we drive on a little ways and a bear runs out in front of us and gets our blood pumping. We decide to check out another spot and as we are driving up there my buddy yells BIG BULL! STOP! I was already out of the truck before my dad could stop and I was loading my rifle. As soon as I saw the bull I knew he was a shooter. I shot and he started walking off. I knew I hit him good but now I'm really nervous and go running after him. It was pretty thick and I could only get glimpses of him. Finally he stopped and I shot and he dropped. It turned out my first shot was fatal. He was double lunged. Now the work begins. Thank god for haywire. We were able to get him to the road fairly quickly. Then my dad and his buddy went and got the trailer and the quad. We had to use the winch on the quad to drag the bull up on the trailer. We took him back to camp and got the hide of and meat hung, cleaned and trimmed. With that done it was time to relax and celebrate!
-

That looks awesome! I love the euro's, especially on a moose because the big white skull contrasts with those brown antlers so beautifully. I had a euro done on my Wyoming moose a couple of years ago, and I love it. Congrats on a nice looking wall piece!
