Well I feel very blessed to be one of the lucky ones this year. It has been 10+ years since I have been able to chase branch bulls instead of spikes/cows. Every year I have had interactions with bulls but couldnt do anything about it. That will change this year!
Not looking for the biggest baddest bull, just an average to decent one (Already got a 7x8 shoulder mount) so if I am fortunate enough this year, it will be a euro.
My knees are not what they used to be, so it will have to happen away from steep and deep (I could still get there, but getting 1 out is a new story, :chuckle:)
Now if I could only decide on where to concentrate my efforts.......328 central, more towards the burned areas, or 329? Decisions, decisions.
What say you? And Yes, I know all of both units very well.
-
That early I may lean towards 328 central. Lots of good places to glass out across the burns. If you cant find them up high, head into 329, by the bar
-
Great tag, congrats   Good luck
-
I would lean towards 329. I like spot and stalk and I tend to think that spot and stalk is the best way to kill a really big bull. 328 will hold more elk for sure, but 329 will always have some monster bulls in there.

If it were my tag I would hunt in 328. There’s big bulls in both but I like the florafonda of the naneum. I’m jealous as hell. I know you’ll do the tag justice. And if you need a packer I’m close.

Lucky. Had it in 2006. Shot the first bull that got close. A nice 5x6. Next time I will wait. Good luck
-

Good lookin bull, that one would work just fine  Looks like he's been doin a little bathing. :chuckle:
-
.
-
Congrats, I missed this earlier.
-
Couple of vids. and a pic.
On another note....I have noticed a major lack of true spikes on my cams this year. So far have only got 2 on the 7 cams i've had out for 2 months now. Not good.
-
:yeah: :IBCOOL:
-
Great videos  keep em coming
-
Some good videos there. You should be able to kill a masher!!

Hey! That must be photo shopped, wildlife won't go within 200 yards of a road! Great pics!!

The bull in the water hole is looking good. Nice long main beams

:yeah: That bull is a stud
-
Good luck in that hunt. I have 16 points and still haven't drawn that tag
-
Good Luck Chris, I hope you kill a giant! That waterhole bull sure is a dandy.
-
Funny its the only decent pic ive got there, and only this pic. Checking cams again this weekend to see whats new and exciting.
-
Teanawayslayer, your inbox is full.
thanks, it’s cleaned up
-
Good luck and great game game footage.
-
stay aggressive and good luck .

Heres another I wouldnt mind finding if I had the archery tag. Pretty little 7x
-
I wonder if it is going to be slow the first week sense no one can hunt cows?
-
I would like to hope so.......but don’t think so. Sometimes a little pressure can help a guy out.
-

That's a damn nice bull
-
2nd half of the hunt is where the action is going to be. When I had the tag last year the second week was big groups of elk with bulls around the perimeter coming and going. First week was fun and I had encounters every day. The two weeks after the season were absolutely nuts.

Yeah he was pretty solid. Super wide too, unfortunately he kept sneaking into timber and I didn't get a lot of quality video of him straight on through the spotter.
-
A couple more on the hit list. The 1 bull should settle the question of are they eyeguards or brow tines..........He just grew both. :chuckle:
-
And a happy calf having a splash. :)
-
O that’s a number one on my list if I had the tag! I love the junk on him
-
Agree. I kind of like the eyeguard one more than the crowned one.
-
Hey Chris, looks like I should go along with you and take care of one of those true spikes so they don’t get between you and one of those big bulls!
-
Loving the mass on this one.
So here he is again (The one I've been after since it opened) He's been super quiet except for this one day....Hung out around the cam for 4 hours screaming his head off. (will have several videos in TC thread)
-
that is an awesome video. good luck
-
Good Luck, some great ones you have on film! .... but those spikes oh man those are the trophy's I am dreaming about!!
-
awesome videos, hope you nail him
-
That tc video of him ripping off a bugle is money!
-
That is a great video. Nice bull too!
-
I’ve been on him, (and a bigger one) for the last 2 days. They are smart. 100 yards away this am, then another hunter pushed him away. >:(
-
Still no bull.......... :dunno:
:chuckle:
-
I felt your pain last year. Tons of opportunity but some many things have to go just right and everytime there was one little thing that went wrong.
Looking back I am frustrated that I didn't fill the tag but man did I have an absolute blast trying. I hope you are having just as much fun.
-
That’s just it.....:all about having fun, and yes I’m having a blast. Very happy that I can chat with bulls a little now. Evidently I’m not saying the right things though. That’s ok though......sitting on a mountain, in an elk bed,in the middle of the forest as I type this, Life is good.

:)

As I recall you have been on this hunt before and filled a tag so you are swinging for the fences this time.
If that's the case don't settle. Hold out until the very last minute of the last day.
Last year, last day, two hours left in the season and I had 3 cows walk into my shooting lane, a great six by six that I passed because I could see an absolute monster coming. He stepped into the opening just as the cows got to my buddy who bumped them back into the bull, sent the arrow and before it got there the cows had spooked him and he spun away before the arrow arrived. Probably would have killed the 6x6 if I would have taken the shot.
Bottom line, no regrets and I had chances right up until the last couple hours of the season.
Enjoy every last minute of it man.
I just hope I draw again before I am 70.

Well......was hoping to post a pic with me holding this bad boy,(1st video) but it wasn't to be. He and I had quite a few conversations for 6 days in a row, (all of which he was laughing at me.) :chuckle:
My wife and I also had a cool encounter with a different bull (6X with massive width) I called him in over open ground from over 400+ yards to within 70 yards.
He came quickly, bugling the whole way along the ridge, then popped over the ridgeline 80 yards above us. Such a cool experience to hear him coming and then watch that massive rack make its way over the ridgeline and into our sight.
She said she felt like she was in a hunting movie :chuckle:
We were set up behind one of only a few trees on the open hillside, a cow decoy 30ish feet to our left and at the same elevation we were, when he saw the decoy he bugled at it, steam rolling out of his breath every time he bugled. He stood there for a couple minutes and every time he would look away(at another bugle in the distance) I would give him a cow chirp. He would return his gaze to the decoy and then move several feet closer.
He got to about 70 yards and wouldn't budge,(straight on and to long for a frontal shot for me) he turned to leave so I bugled to stop him, which worked, but cow calling couldn't convince him to come any closer. :bash:
We were set up for what we thought was an encounter from below, did not expect one from behind/above us, ..ohhh if I could only do that setup again, but different!!!
The bull in the below video, gave me the slip wayyyyy to many times. He was on the same ridgeline as the other bull, and took a slightly different path to cross this ridge into heavy timber every time. He would bugle like crazy at me, and come my way for a bit, then he would beeline into the timber. I tried guessing his route every day, only to have him outsmart me every time. >:(
He did have multiple cows with him, (6 other bulls I saw were all alone) so pretty sure he was happy with his group and did not want to risk losing any battles.
If I only had 1-2 more days..............
It was a blast having the ability to chase and talk to big bulls again. I got some incredible cam footage of several things/scenarios that I've never captured before, which are just as rewarding as having arrowed a bull, (well almost anyways ;))
Now the wait is on for the next ??? years to draw again. :)

Great hunting adventure! You really went after them. Thanks for sharing!
-
Thanks for bringing us along. I still have a gut ache from what could have been last year. I was really hoping you would connect. Congrats on sticking to your goal and giving it everything you had.
No regrets.

Sounds like you had a blast
