Title: Dump Trailers.....best one for the money??
Post by: jrebel on July 05, 2018, 08:36:31 PM: OK....so I have done some research and am looking into buying a dump trailer. Which brand / make is the best??? Anything I should be looking for specifically in the build? What do you have and do you like it? Scissor hydrolic lift or??

I am looking for a minimum 12-14 foot and maybe a 16 footer.

Also best place to buy one?

Thanks, checking them out now. Really like the 8x14 with drop down sides. I just messaged Luft for a quote.

This for sure. I have a 14" 14k Big Tex that I picked up used for $5800 but if was purchasing new it would be a C&B. Little things like where their D rings are welded and factory rear stabilizers for loading are well thought out.

Post by: Wolfdog2314 on July 06, 2018, 05:33:10 AM: Been using the heck out of my in laws 14ft Big Tex. Hauling 5 yards of rock at a time with it. Always performed great. It did have the solinoid go out on the hydraulics once, which was a quick fix.

I liked the PJ and Iron Bull when I was looking but the Iron Bull was quite a bit cheaper and looked to be a little more solidly built. I've had Big Tex trailers before and their paint job sucked on mine. My Iron Bull looks like new except for inside the box.

I ended up buying a 16 foot MaxXD 7x14 14K trailer. 14 ply tires, spare w/mount on the trailer, tarp kit, cold weather kit, led light package, loading jacks on rear, 10K front jack, 2 way gate and all 10 gauge steel (deck and sides) with 12 inch spacing / brace on length of bead.

All in all, it appears to be a very sturdy, well built trailer. Couldn't find many bad reviews so decided what the heck....let do it. Tax, license, and all the extras cost me 10K. base trailer was 8500. When looking at tall the others it seams like a very reasonable price. I will post pics tomorrow.

This is the brand I ended up with, you'll love it. The only thing I would have done different would be, a 16' we got the 14' when I went to haul hay it was about 12" short of being able to get one more row of bales. But so far that's my only.complaint.

Not 100% sure, It is said to be a cold weather light / light harness package. I wouldn't have upgraded to this, but they had two trailers on the lot, on beefed up with lots of extras. I bought that one because the price was the same as the one without the extras. I would assume better wiring harnesses that are sealed and better protected to freezing conditions.

10K trailer....should come with a keurig and 10 year supply of coffee pods......or a wet bar!!! :chuckle: :chuckle:

What was the cost of the upgrade?

All my upgrades we're free.....well at least they cost the same as the stock trailer sitting next to it. I negotiated down 700 dollars from their asking price. I imagine they still made money. :chuckle:

Post by: the1rod on March 14, 2019, 12:21:47 PM: One other thing I'll add for anyone else looking, is to make sure the trailer has a quality hydraulic pump and relays. I worked in a trailer shop and this was the number one repair on dump trailers. Also make sure that once you have the trailer to keep the pump and relays clean, most of them are in the toung storage compartment and people have a habit of packing those with crap that end up breaking parts or wires, or they end up shorting out the relays. One other thing to watch whenever you have the bed in dump position is to look and make sure your wiring is still secured so it doesn't get pinched when you lower the bed.

Post by: Gun smoke on March 19, 2019, 09:14:14 PM: The absolutely most important thing about owning a dump trailer is making sure the doors stay pinned open when dumping...... don’t ask how I know ! When dumping really heavy loads that are not completely centered side to side the bed will flex no matter the brand , and depending on the latching system can come unlatched ! Just a heads up . Also mine was supposed to lift /dump 15k , filled it with concrete from a demo job and just wouldn’t lift it . That blows also ! Probably one of the most handy things I own tho if you know it’s limmits . Oh one more thing , going to the gravel yard the guy running the loader isn’t always your friend , some are great and will give you exactly what you want (tons) some will over load the crap out of you !
