Title: Blackhorn 209 Charges out of a CVA Accura V2 LR
Post by: wazzu99 on July 09, 2018, 01:35:25 PM: Just purchased this gun and looking to start working up some bullet/primer combinations with the Blackhorn 209 powder. Anyone find anything that works well out of this rifle for a good starting point?

Going to be using it for my eastside elk tag this fall.

CCI 209M
Federal 209A

I have pretty much the exact setup as you and same bullet. I never really worked a lot of combinations, but settled at 100g by volume.

I believe if you just purchased a V2 with 209 ignition and you want to shoot BH you will now need to purchase a CVA BH approved breech plug.

On our most recent test with the Accura LR, we ended up with a .65" grouping at 100 yards with 100 grains by volume of Blackhorn 209, CCI 209 Magnum Primers, and the 270 PowerBelt Platinum. I would expect similar results with the Barnes T-EZ or Thor's.

Absolutely all of these Blackhorn 209 recommendations are 100 gr by volume (70 gr by weight). Shooting 100 gr by weight of Blackhorn 209 can NOT be recommended, although possible in a few muzzleloader models

Just my way...I start with a low load and start building in 10gr increments. I chronograph and measure every single group shooting off a rest with front and rear rests. If my rifle will take a scope I mount a scope for load development. I will surpass the 120gr max or 150gr equivalent by at least 10gr. After I determine what my rifle shoots I will take the best two loads and try them again and go 5gr on either side. I start with the stock sabot's, but I also try different sabots with the loads that shoot the velocity I want to see if I can increase the accuracy.

Yes I do that with several different bullet Sabo and powder combinations and pretty much know exactly what my rifle will shoot with just about any decent hunting bullet/sabot. I even try bore sized bullets in that mix. I shot all the Barnes 250, 290, 300 bullets and across the board they were the most accurate by a small margain over the Lehigh Bullets and MMP sabots. Those Lehigh shoot really well but so do the Hornady XTP bullets. Some say I'm splitting hairs....and I agree fully!!
