Need a decent priced truc crate for the pup and our hunting adventures. Would love to hear some advice on brands and likes and dislikes

If you already have your puppy get started on the crate training as soon as you can.
I started with a smaller 2 piece upper and lower plastic Kennel from a friend and have moved to a larger Kennel. Get what you can afford the dog will like it if you teach it to use it properly. I have a large open metal one that I use when I have to leave her at home for a longer period of time. Most Kennels you see in the back of trucks are the 2 piece plastic ones.

What breed is your dog, what is your budget, and what do you drive? I have the plastic type with an insulated Mud River cover for traveling and the wire type for sleeping. Both work great for my needs. Ruff tuff, Dakota 283, and Gunner Kennels are all worth checking out, and then there are the diamond plate dog boxes depending on how much and how far you travel. The cheaper options work well for the money and are what most people use. Something like this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000MLG484/ref=dp_cerb_2

if you have a large breed get a bigger box. Especially if your doing long road trips. I have labs, we do a trip to ND every year, i bought the xl plastic crate , just for comfort.

I have a GSP and like 3hr trips over night she is already crate trained but it’s a wire one and I don’t want to bring that one with

I have a pair of Ruff Tough kennels that I have been very happy with.

These need to be in the conversation too.

I still use the crate that came with my first dog in 1989. Its a vari kennel, its been used to crate train and truck haul close to 15 dogs, housed a litter of kittens, a baby pig, a house rabbit and was used as a safe haven for a kestrel that knocked itself out.

What size would be recommended for a GSP?
-
My guess would be medium or large, kinda depends on the crate style and your dogs mature size.
-
I use a Ruff Tough with insulated cover when needed. I'd love a Gunner, but there's no way I'd feel comfortable about leaving that thing in the back of my truck in a lot of the spots I hunt.

What did you end up with?
-
Get a big one if you have room. In the winter you can add a dog bed. In the summer they have more room for air flow. Many fancy brands I've seen are too small.
-
For a GSP I would get a large size for sure. I have two vari-kennels and have been happy with them.

Last year cabelas had the ruff tough marked down 20% just before hunting season. For safety reasons, when traveling, smaller is better. Barely tall enough for your dog to stand up.
