This one has been a challenge to a few buddies. It is not a Washington bear for what it’s worth. I thought for sure it was a grizzly bear but some were not so sure.

It's an interesting one. I've gotten mixed answers from a few buddies who are experienced bear hunters. Some say black and some say griz. This bear was in Wyoming so it could be either. Our resident WA outfitter said it was a grizzly.
-
That's way to pronounced of a hump to be anything but a Griz.
-
I'm no bear expert and would never try to act like one, but I've never really thought the hump was a sure fire way to ID one from the other. Too many times people see a shoulder hump and automatically jump to the grizzly thing. Black bears have shoulder blades too, and in the right stance, those shoulder blades will protrude. In this case I think you're right because it's pretty much standing flat.
-
Jack's is a grizz.
-
A good way to sharpen your "ID" skills is to watch all the bow hunting videos of black and grizzly bears. The footage is up close so you get to see the bears in different scenarios and positions.
-
@jackelope
I don’t see the facial features of a griz on that bear.
Still hard to say.
-

This is what threw the other guys off too.
-
@jackelope
I’m shooting the first bear you posted.
It’s a black bear. Ears and face are that of a black.
-
Here one more.

@Ironhead
That’s a griz.

Thats a griz.
He's dead.

This is a massive black, but I'm not pulling the trigger at this point until I watch it for a bit. The bear is too long, too big of a rear in proportion to the shoulders, and lacks the facial features of a grizz.
This bear would get me excited!
-
Can a grizzly bear mate with a black bear?
Species and subspecies of bear known to have produced offspring with another bear species or subspecies include brown bears, black bears, grizzly bears and polar bears, all of which are members of the Ursus genus. Bears not included in Ursus, such as the giant panda, are probably unable to produce hybrids.
Since it bares on this subject i checked.Very interesting.
-
This is the same results I got when I sent this pic out to several buddies. Some insisted it was a grizzly and others were convinced it was a giant black bear. The folks I surveyed were all very experienced hunters who have killed multiple bears and hunt all over the west for the most part. One of those guys said he was sure it was a grizzly and he sent it to a buddy of his who guides brown bear hunts in Alaska. That guy also agreed it was 100% a grizzly.

The good news is we don't have to shoot it until we're sure
So I'd glass that a good while before I sent it, and if it ran off before I was sure then so be it.

I'm with KFhunter on the bear jackelope posted, at first glance you think it might be a grizzly but the face, ears, and rear end look more like a blackie, I think it's a big black, but I would wait till he turned his head to see the outline to make sure he didn't have a dished forehead. Then BOOM!

I've gotta go with grizzly on jacklope's pic. Was this taken in NW Wyoming?
Edit: had to come back and look at this after taking the Montana bear identification course....switching to black bear...big big sow.

All of them black bears, yes jackelope even yours.
-
I’m not convinced.
-
Just to be clear, the 2nd bear I posted a pic of is not the same as the 1st one.

I was referring to the first you posted in the sage, the second cinamon bear is a blackie for sure. Bang
-
Great challenge. That bear in the sage is a big ol black bear.
-
I'm going with:
-
Except for the video of the bright colored griz.
And I'm not 100% sure on jackalope's second bear. I feel very confident the first one is a black bear. I should point out I don't have half the creds of some of the folks who seem to think it's a griz, but that doesn't change how I feel about it.
-
Jack's first bear is a black bear.
There is absolutely no grizzly face resemblance, whatsoever.
The color is also wrong.
-
Both of Jakelopes pics are of black bears.

my thoughts as well

I think it's a black bear but it identifies itself as a grizzly and expects everyone else to.
-
Two more pics to ponder
-
sows with cubs = no shoot
species irrelevant :IBCOOL:
do I win?

Those are all blackies

Those are all blackies
Winner, winner, chicken dinner.

How about this guy?

Good job identifying everyone.

Sooo Stupid for a requirement!!

How about this guy?
I'm still sticking with black. The "hump" just looks like a shoulder blade in a weird position to me. + the ear looks a lot like a black bear.
I have zero interesting photos to add. Keep 'em coming folks! This is fun.
-
?
Black for sure.

Here's a better picture showing clearly, he is a black.
It's funny how a certain angle can portray something so differently.

There are people arguing and insulting each other thinking it’s a Grizz on the Facebook.
-
Here’s a front facing photo of the actual 500 pound grizzly bear that’s been breaking into homes.

That little bear isn't going to learn how to be a real bear living away from people, they learn from the sow at a very young age what and how to eat and how to forage, it's either going to die a long slow death of starvation or more likely find more people to scavenge from. They need euthanized.
-
Bearpaw echoes my thoughts as well on Jackelope's photo. Front on I am 95% certain it is a gorgeous black bear, but I would want to see it's profile to confirm. It seems those shoulder humps are more pronounced on a black bear when they are standing with their front feet below their back feet.
-
Front on view is not the same bear as in the other pics..
-

The bear walking towards the trap and the bear in front of the garbage are definitely different bears.
-
But neither one is a grizz
-
Absolutely agree.

Reporter probably couldn't tell the obvious difference..probably never been in the woods and seen a bear in real life
