Ok, today is the opener. Please share your bloody deck pics, trophy shots, tips and tactics, and hotspots if you will. I plan to be out this weekend and am looking forward to sunshine and tight lines.
-
Mid Channel, herring on the deck. Should take care of it. Unless your H20 and need your fancy wonder woman spoon. :chuckle: Wish I was out there this morning. 2 buddies and their respective crews in 2 separate boats have hooked 10 combined so far.
-
I had originally scheduled today off just to be out for the opener, ended up cancelling due to work. Now I won't be out until the end of the month. :bash: Hope everyone is having fun out there!
-
Brisk bite this morning at 1st light on the East side of P. bar.
Today's spoon of wonder -
-
gibbs wee g on one side and coho killer in herring aid on the other side , one was as good as the other. great bite this am hope the quota hold for a while

One from this morning:
And an FYI - area 8-2 is closed to salmon fishing until Aug 1.
-
area 11 is closed on tues-thursdays for the rest of the season! No reason for that, I'm guessing a certain group will continue on?? Nice fish CP !

Great fish, we bailed about low tide due to all the weed. Conditions must have improved?

This doesn't look good. Edmonds marina cam photo, looks like a gill net boat. Anyone seen any nets in the water?

They call it "test netting" :chuckle:

Double check, my cousin told me this and he’s a fishing nut! But I never checked myself, he usually Moore’s his boat in Des Moines for the month but not now.

Fyi, this thread will not become a thread regarding netting practices or tribal fishing related chatter. Take it elsewhere. This is a thread for tips, reports, open seats maybe, trophy shots, and hopefully a few pics of bbq filets.
-
:sry: but why the hell not it seems it was a report and a good tip to me
-
And I left it. Enough said. We are not going further down that road.
-
I’ll get it back on track, this is my fish from opening morning.

Nice

Isnt it 4 days? Wasn't the 16th the opener? Either way, if the fishing keeps up it wont make it to two weekends.

I counted today, but there's no way they had the date for today that quick. So yea 4 days 3,000 fish. No way it makes it till next Saturday

Marine Area 9 closes for hatchery Chinook retention effective July 23, 2018
The Edmonds Fishing Pier will remain open to the retention of Chinook

Wish they would increase the retention size so the season goes longer and all those poor blackmouth get a break.

Nice. Care to share details? Back out tomorrow.
We did well in 10. Lots of coho still, but hit two kings, pretty much all the fish on spoons. Particularly the kastmaster. 🙄. Fish checker at shilshole said she was checking more fish from Kingston and point no point. Sounds like it’s on fire there. Back out for me tomorrow too.
-
Thx. I think ill hit the west side of the bar 1st.
-
H20 any luck best king season I have ever seen. Was like like shooting fish in a barrel couldnt even get two lines out today.

Not like that!

It appeared to have slowed way down yesterday, at least on P. bar. Maybe we will get another day or two.
July 20, 2018
Hatchery chinook retention to close in Marine Area 9
Action: Marine Area 9 (Admiralty Inlet) will be closed to the retention of hatchery chinook salmon beginning Monday, July 23.
Effective date: 12:01 a.m. Monday, July 23, 2018.
Species affected: Hatchery chinook salmon.
Location: Marine Area 9 (Admiralty Inlet), except the Edmonds Fishing Pier.
Reason for action: Preliminary estimates indicate that anglers have caught over half of the summer quota since the fishery opened July 16. The fishery will close to allow fishery managers to re-evaluate the catch after the weekend of fishing to determine how much available quota remains. Should there be sufficient catch available, WDFW will announce when the fishery will reopen to harvest the remaining quota.
Additional information: Anglers can continue to retain hatchery chinook in Marine Area 9 through the end of the day Sunday, July 22.
After Sunday, salmon fishing will remain open in Marine Area 9, where anglers can retain hatchery coho salmon as part of their two-salmon daily limit but must release chinook, chum, and wild coho. Hatchery chinook fishing remains open in all other marine areas of Puget Sound except Areas 8-1, 8-2, and Area 12 north of Ayock Point.
The Edmonds Fishing Pier will remain open to the retention of chinook as listed in the Washington Sports Fishing Rules pamphlet.
For specific regulations, anglers should consult the 2018-19 Washington Sports Fishing Rules pamphlet available online at http: //wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/regulations/.
Anglers can check WDFW's website at https: //wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/reports_plants.html for the latest information on marine areas that are managed to a quota or guideline.
Information contact: David Stormer, Puget Sound recreational salmon fishery manager, (360) 902-0058 or Mark Baltzell, Puget Sound salmon manager, (360) 902-2807.

Yes, pretty good fishing out there. Here's my haul from yesterday am in 10. Released one king trying to find a bigger one, but the bite slowed down after the tide change so figured I better not get too greedy and bonked this one.

Starting to smoke now;;

Fishing point no point. Got one at about 6 In the boat. Nothing since. Friends are coming up blank as well.
-
We nailed a 15lb keeper nook right out of the gate, first 5 min then tons of 16-20" blackmouths and 2 keeper coho until we quit at 10:00am. Fast action all morning but only one adult king. Only 2 keeper dunges in 2 pots on a 5 hour soak.
-
2 in the boat just before 6 and done. Off point no point 125 down
-
Next batch is puffing away -
-
Boy, you guys are making me miss living over on the KP, actually didn't think that was possible. :chuckle: How much longer they going let you fish? Or how close is the quota, to being filled?
-
9 closes tonight. They closed it last week but re opened it over the weekend.
-
My kid and I took advantage of the early tide change yesterday. We started at 5:00a and bonked our second king at 5:37a. Then we switched to coho, and were done at 6:30a. Another nice July coho in the mix, this one was right at six lbs. Kings were 7 and 10 lbs. We released another clipped king in the 8 lb range. Just great fishing out there.

Yes, still in MA10. My kid was all excited to make the trek to MA9 for the last day (we launch at Shilshole), so we loaded up on gas and food to make a day out of it. He was hell bent on catching our kings. But I wanted to make an early stop so we could fish first light and the tide change, and we never made it out of there.
-
that is a solid coho at 6 lbs.
No kidding, that's our second one like that. Both were unclipped, wonder if there's an early coho run in one of the south sound rivers? The rest of the cohos we've caught have all been in the 3 lb. range, presumably all residents.
-
released 3 undersized chinook, lost 1 at the boat, came home with 1 coho.
oh well, better than work!
-
Kings are still happening but I'm not finding any Coho.
-
Nice fish CP!
I did a couple quick trips before work this week and also didn't run into any coho. Likely back out tomorrow, depending on the weather.
-
I hope the weather improves, snotty and lumpy out there. Still feels like I’m on the boat, the room is swaying a bit.
-
Two Coho for us today. One nice one and the other was a large trout size :chuckle: Very lumpy out there today.
-
Any recent reports?
-
I limited five days in a row and then yesterday in the PM tide nothing. Didn’t even hook a shaker.
That was my first day out fishing in the Pm though. Hoping the mornings stay good this week. I talked to a warden at the ramp and he said the MA10 quota was at 50% or so.

-
currently sidelined waiting for surgery but got word from my neighbor of easy limits of kings at apple tree this morning right at tide change
-
Well if the wind lays down I'll try the oil dock area in the morning. Haven't tried there yet this season.
-
I heard the oil docks is doing well. We did Jeff Head today, good bite at the tide change and then died. We got our two kings but no coho.
Yesterday we got a sockeye on the west side. That was a first in the sound for me. Caught them in MA 7 but never further south.
-
The oil docks wasn't happening this morning but yes, Jeff Head was on fire just before the tide change.
-
Southern 10 seems to have dried up as far as I have observed for Kings. Haven’t caught one since Thursday. Did catch some resident silvers this morning. Guess heading north is the ticket.
SR1
-
went home last night with 1 keeper, lost 1 good one at the boat, and released 2 hatchery and 1 native

1/4 to the boat and missed 2-3 others, bunch o dinks and extra fins. I can’t complain about the weather though.

Bite was pretty stellar at the tide change. There were nets flying everywhere. Caught three kings and a silver. Haven’t seen too many native kings this year. Let one swim. All of the fish are the same size this year. Where are the larger fish?
SR1
-
Where are the larger fish?
There’s at least one good sized one swimming around out there. He has a white lightning Coho Killer stuck in his jaw. If you happen upon him I’d like my spoon back.
-
We did our best to retrieve your spoon, seemed like the big fish were hard to find today. We ended up with probably close to 10 bites and nothing larger than an average early coho.
I did see a few good fish caught, but they were at least 10:1 with the dinks where we were fishing. The deepest water we were in was 150', so they may have done better out in the channel.
Great day, just wish I could have found a nook or two.
-
Here is a question, when you guys say "tide change", are you talking about low tide or when the current is slack? Today, Kingston/Jeff Head was about 7:53 for low tide and 9:47 for slack current, which is almost two hours later. I tend to look at current more than the tide heights as I think this is what impacts the bait and fish, but I'm wondering what you guys think.
For current, I pull all my times from DeepZoom or off the Lowrance.
-
It's all about the current - ebb to flood or vise-versa. Often there is no real "slack", just a current seam traveling across the water and when you pass it or it passes you the current is running the other way.
But when the current direction changes, the fishing almost always changes.
-

might be the same one that took my purple spoon last night! best take down of the night and it was peelin some line, then SNAP goes the leader. :bash:
-
Most of ours have been 8 - 12. We got two that were bigger, but both came after we had bonked our kings for the day and got a free pass. Here's the biggest one, he was probably in the 20 range. That's a 4" spoon hanging out of his mouth for reference.

Yep me too. I have hooked a few that I think were bigger but not sure, felt like it. I will gladly return the spoon to catch a bigger one!

If you really want a big one you are probably going have to toss back a few 8-15 lbers.
That's a hard thing to do when you consider the value of the fish in hand:

Yup, and I can’t do it! I can let the 22-24” fish go, but am gonna bonk pretty much any Puget Sound fish over that. Last week that worked against me, but fishing the last couple weeks is definitely not the norm.

Notice how the “wild” fish in the picture is missing an adipose fin? I wonder if your average Washingtonian knows the differences in our salmon, where they come from and the politics behind them.

SR1
I think they are referring to "wild" as in "from the ocean free swimming" vs. the farmed fish from Costco that swim in a pen someplace and are fed pellets.
Even using the WDFW definition, fish with an adipose aren't necessarily "wild", they just aren't hatchery for sure. Some fish make it through the machine without getting marked, some hatchery fish breed in the wild and some native hatcheries don't mark fish at all.

WDFW updated the quota count, looks like we still have quite a bit of time in MA10 and MA11.

You can also achieve the pellicle by putting in on the counter with a fan.
-
Nothing came home in the cooler tonight. Released 6-7 undersized Kings and unfortunately (or fortunately because I hadn’t caught any natives this year) released two natives that were 20-25 lbs. so nothing in the freezer but some damn fun fishing

its quicker in the fridge if you have room is the only issue. i rarely do so it takes 3-4 hrs of so with a fan on the counter

Hey guys... went east and fished for Smallies the last four days. Was thinking about salmon the whole time but it was still fun.
Are things still going in area 10 or should I be joining my buddy on his boat down in 11.
Would like to fish my new “home” area in 10 a bit more. Any word?
Thanks!

Fishing was still good in MA10 Thursday - Saturday, but I spent the last few days in MA7. I've heard good things about MA11 though too, one report from yesterday said they got into a bunch of coho around Des Moines.

Got this email this afternoon:
WDFW FISHING RULE CHANGE
Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife
600 Capitol Way North, Olympia, WA 98501-1091
http://wdfw.wa.gov
August 15, 2018
Marine Area 10 to close to hatchery chinook retention
Action: Marine Area 10 (Seattle/Bremerton) will be closed to the retention of hatchery chinook salmon beginning Friday, Aug. 17.
Effective date: 12:01 a.m. Friday, Aug. 17, 2018.
Species affected: Hatchery chinook salmon.
Location: Marine Area 10 (Seattle/Bremerton), excluding the year-round piers.
Reason for action: Preliminary estimates indicate that anglers have harvested more than 90 percent of the summer chinook quota since the fishery opened on July 16. The fishery will close to allow fishery managers to re-evaluate the catch and determine if any quota remains.
Additional information: Marine Area 10 will remain open to the retention of hatchery and wild coho salmon as part of the two salmon daily limit. Anglers must release chinook and chum. Sinclair Inlet remains open for the retention of hatchery chinook through Sept. 30. Anglers fishing the year-round piers have a daily limit of two salmon, one of which may be a chinook, but must release chum through Sept. 15.
For specific regulations, anglers should consult the 2018-19 Washington Sports Fishing Rules pamphlet available online at http://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/regulations/.
Anglers can check WDFW’s website at https://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/reports_plants.html for the latest information on marine areas that are managed to a quota or guideline.
Information contact: David Stormer, Puget Sound recreational salmon fishery manager, (360) 902-0058 or Mark Baltzell, Puget Sound salmon manager, (360) 902-2807.

got the email above, took today off work and my fiance and i went out and both got a king, also came home with a few dungees, bummed 10 is closed already but it was a fun summer out there.
-
Coho are open, limit 2.
-
Any chance that they will reopen this?
-
Not from what I am hearing and reading. They only open fisheries back up if after they really look at the numbers and there are room left in the quota and from what I am hearing there isn't. But that's not official by any means. But it does look like its all about slivers now. Someone needs to rename this threat or start a new one from 2018 Area 9 and 10 king to SILVERS. If you go out watch the regs on the silvers right now in those areas. You can keep 2 in both areas but in area 9 you have to let the natives go and in area 10 you can keep hatchery or natives.
