The 17 hmr savage with acutrigger is a great gun. Find out what kind of ammo it likes and buy a bunch when on sale at bimart

The V semi-auto is a wonderful gun, but altho small, we found the recoil doesn't allow you to see the results of your shot.  A bolt action HMR or WSM lets you also enjoy your shot...

I used to shoot my Sav. 93/17 HB SS Thumbhole stock 17 HMR exclusively for sage rats but then I bought a Sav. HB SS Bmag 17 WSM and I hardly ever shoot any of my 17 HMR's anymore.  If you're looking for a Sav model 93 HB SS Laminated Thumbhole stock 17 HMR I can help you out with that and mine has already been threaded if you want to shoot it suppressed.

I shoot my Bmag 17 WSM suppressed pretty much 100% of the time and they are crazy quiet.

The 17 WSM really starts to show its extra horsepower over the HMR when you start reaching out past 100 yds and from 150+ the 17 WSM really shows its strength.  The Bmag gets beat up on and called a POS but the HB SS models generally shoot pretty well.  I restocked mine with a Boyd's Pro Varmint and it turned out pretty well.

Here is a test for accuracy on a variety of different .17 cal rimfire rifles from Chuch Hawks website that'll probably shock a lot of folks.

Savage has Bmag models with a laminated stock and also a laminated thumbhole, but none of the Bmags come with the Pro Varmint stock.

I just meant the pro varmint. Had a guy order one yesterday and it was something I didn't know they were doing. Thought it was cool

Wow, all these suggestions are interesting for a sage rat gun.

When I go with my boys we just take our pellet guns.

We are shooting them next to the grapes and hop farms. Last year we went and killed 27 in an afternoon.

Ammo cost gets involved for Sage Rats where you can shoot over 500 rounds a day. Most of the time any of the 17's will have good accuracy. My choice for price is the HMR, watch the cost and you can get $100 a brick. But if you want the hottest then the WSM at $135 a brick. I shoot 3 model 77 with custom triggers and barrels in 17M2, 22LR and 17 HMR and looking into a Bmag 17 WSM in stainless thumb hole. Also use 6-24 scope with Mildot or Varmint cross hairs, good head shots, flop flop!

I love using my bvss 17 HMR with 17 grain bullets inside 200 yards. The heavy barrel takes a while to get really hot and they really fly when you hit them with those. Past that and I'm using my 22 250 or a 204. Last time I went I shot 500 rounds of 17 and 100 rounds of other and the guys I went with said it was a slow day.

I've got the 22 mag, 17HMR, 17 Bmag and a 22 TCM (look that bad boy up). The 17 BMag and 22Mag are my favorites. The 17 HMR is ok, but doesn't have the distance for when you shoot all the sage rats up close to you. Gotta have something that will get out past 150 yards. IMO..
