Have any of you ever fished for taimen in Mongolia?
-
No, read lots about them though. You either use a ground squirrel as bait, or a fly that matches the ground squirrel hatch. you plannin' another trip Phool?
-
Once,
in a dream...
-
That would be something else using a ground squirell as bait!!
-
...not kidding... that's what the mongolian guides use.
-
THats probably what we eat at mongolian grill too . Fried squirell. Its not bad though.
-
Had a trip in the works back in like 2000. Fell through for me but had some buddies go. They had a blast.
-
I don't travel, except by road :chuckle:
Dale at Don's in Lewistown has fished for them. He had some stories, lures completely crushed, searing runs and crazy jumps. Must be quite a battle.

Sounds like bait and a sandwich spread all in one jar. :chuckle: :chuckle:

...Ground squirrel... The Other White Meat...

WTH, you eavesdropping on Jacks and my e-mails again. We were just talking about that. I think Obama should stimulate me and send us over as our God given American right.

:chuckle: :chuckle:

I've never heard of Taimen prior to this, however I just went and looked. It doesn't seem they're that big... but why the hell do they fish for them with a ground squirrel? Or am I just not seeing the correct pictures?
-
You must be looking at some little ones. The one's I read about were in the 7 and 8 foot long category. THAT'S why you fish with a ground squirrel....

That's a bit of stretch. 50" are not uncommon though.
-
you're not seeing the correct picture.
the big ones are huge. the average ones are not extremely huge.

I'll see if I can find any of the magazines. Maybe my memory is hazy...
-
giant carniverous fish on the fly in one of the earth's most beautiful places...
what could be better?
-
Hmm, ok. I guess I can see that. They are a decent size. Ya'll eat em too, or what?
-
I'll check my back copies of Flyfisherman. Seems I remember a picture of a guy casting upstream to one that was over 8 feet long. Like I said, maybe my memory is hazy...
-
scroll back up a ways and look at the youtube vid i posted...there's some trucks in there.
-
It would be like fishing for kings with lemmings, and the biggest kings we know of, like the Kenai strain, where the 70 pounders are some of the small ones. Seems to me, a 9 weight fly rod with a huge mouse pattern dipped in blood, would be a BLAST. LOL
-
I remember that article too Pathfinder101. I don't remember which mag, I think it was about 4 years ago, but I do remember monster fish. Should we start planning a hunt-wa Far East side rendezvous 2010? Anyone know how much fuel and how long it would take the 10hp to push the driftboat across the Pacific?
-
We can borrow the aqua loggers barge since he might not be needing it now.

Not much fuel if we cross Mongol/Native American style up by the Berring Straits. Probably pick up a couple of guides on the way down... If I remember right, you bascially go for a week and hope to catch one fish. Get up on the high ground and spot and stalk...

you left out watchin em eat your fly as you swing it past their beak :rockin:
-
I fished the Frying Pan River in Colorado a few years ago beneath the Ruedi Dam. HUGE rainbows on tiny mysis shrimp. Same type of deal; spot from above and stalk, then cast over and over and over until you get a take. I fished 6 hours and got one take from a fish that I am guessing was around 10 lbs. I was so suprised when he finally went for it I pulled the fly right out of his $#@!ing mouth :bash: :bash: :bash:
That was it. 6 hours. One take. :'(
-
Why you use a ground squirrel..
-
Haha, I've seen Northern's do that.
-
:yike:
-
Bone - Is a 9 wt big enough?

9wt is fine. 2 hander, depending on the river is really nice.
-
I'm sure it would test it to the limits, but as long as you have a spare.....
-
i don't see the need for anything bigger, especially in the 2 handed 13' long variety.
-
could you imagine a chum salmon that pushed the 80-100 pound range. :yike:
-
i think most of them are not so big...with the very occasional big boy.
-
oh fine...how about a 70-80 pound chum. :chuckle:
-
You guys do know they are the biggest member of the salmon family right? yep bigger then kings
-

Nope, compairing them to a 90 pound chum was just a lucky shot in the dark
-
well some comments did not seem to point in that direction
-
I worked in Russia in the 1990's and managed to get out to the remote areas adn do quite a bit of fishing.
Fished in Siberia area North of Norilsk and caught quite a few taimen. Biggerst one went over 60 lbs. Saw many bigger.Awesome fish. Caught a few smaller ones on a fly rod (10 wt) throwing big streamers
-

Do they fight as hard?
-
More importantly, they have giant gobi and altai argali sheep there... Maybe I should make a "cast and snap" trip... I just looked up airfare and it is 2k per person. Ouch.
-
Maybe it should be "cast and bang"?
-
Wanted to do an archery sheep or ibex hunt when in Russia. Too expensive Shot a wild boar with my recurve while there. Wolf hunting was very popular there and is a depised animal. Russians did not understand the hunting with a bow. I think archery is now mor epopular.
Yes, Taimen are very good fighters. Blast to catch

Bone I believe you have already been estimulated by Obama...just waiting for the pain to hit ;)
