I know its been on here before but i think it would be cool to get it going again. Ive been looking at pictures of large mule deer bucks preparing for my hunt and i would like to see pics of bucks with their score posted next so i could try to judge what they are. Links to threads are great as well.

Let’s see some more bucks!

Here’s a couple. Not “large” by any means but pretty good to look at. :chuckle:
I know the scores that I came up with on both but haven’t been officially measured.
Outside spread of 25 on the first and 23 on the second.

167"

first 150 second little more. Only guessing that by the deeper forks.

The issue with these kinds of games is more often then not, folks don't know how to actually score. They calculate in outside spread, tip to tip, incorrect spread credit, or they measure the mass incorrectly. So the scores they claim may actually be off by dozens of inches. Just a word of caution to the OP when considering some measurements :twocents:

dropping the fun hammer. >:( :chuckle:

Tough love :chuckle:
-
Here is a good example. This buck has an H1 (first mass measurement, not the base) measurement of 8 2/8". So when people say their deer has pop can mass, they may be exxagerating :chuckle:
Edit for the fat fingering :bash: :chuckle: :sry:

Sometimes they are closer than their guesses of weights on bears. :chuckle:

:yeah:
And wide doesn't normally help you. Outside width means nothing. Inside spread is where it is at and like I say it normally doesn't help. Narrow inside will hurt you. You are limited on spread credit by the length of the main beam.

Couple of bucks we got a few year ago.
Mine is on the left, nice, heavy and wide but crab claws, scores just over 130”.
My buddies on the right is heavy and narrow with deep forks, scores mid 150’s.

Definitely possible

One more. These bucks were killed 5 years apart - about 8 miles from each other and score within 3" of each other. Completely different bucks and I think one is "way bigger", but they actually score very close.

typical bucks can be tough to judge in pics. epsecially if they have a lot of curvature.

What's going on in the top pic on the passenger side? Is that a forked g3 or some sort of an inline? Any side shots?

I agree but since I waited 16 years for a mule deer rut tag I want to test myself at scoring deer by eye. After waiting this long it's all or nothing for me and I want to me prepared

The weak spread makes it hard as this buck seems to have mass and deep forks front and back. I'm saying upper 150'slow 160's. This one is hard but a shooter for sure

180 is my goal praying for snow. Best so far is 145 so passing a 160 will be hard. One of the reasons I wanted to start this thread. Time to train the mind lol

See bottom buck no questions asked shooter top buck would shoot for sure but have to make sure. Judging off bottom buck I'm going to say upper 170's
-
The top buck scores 167” and the bottom buck was 170”.
The top buck has no eye guards and pencil mass, but has really long g-3’s and g-4’s and a fairly long inline.
The bottom buck would have been a stud if his passenger side forked normally. He is essentially a 3x4.

Both of ours scored the same. It would be cool to put them side by side and see if theres much difference.
-
I have said this before and will say it again. If you are hunting Washington state and only Washington state, 135" and up is a great deer for an OTC tag. If you have a special permit depending on the permit that number can go up to 150" or 160". For me anything over 145" gets tough to judge especially because I have only hunted Washington state and am accustomed to looking at deer here.

if love to see the numbers breakdown on your buck Hockey. I have a pretty sharp scoring eye and I couldn't even come close to 185. I'd love to see where I short changed him. Do you have any pics where it's not so distorted from being so close to the camera?

Sure, no problem Karl. I can scan the score sheet and post it tomorrow. It will be in the next NW big game book. At the time I think it was #15 for the state in their book. I just missed the cut off mark for Boone. A guy named Russ scored it. It looks deceiving. We didn't get any good pics of it in the field. My father in law took the pics in the field and my wife took the pics of me holding the European mount. They both suck at taking pictures. :bash: :dunno:
-
Awesome thank You! Nothing better than a little eyecrometer calibration
-
Russ McDonald. He has scored all of my stuff. Solid guy for sure.
Pics are everything. You can make a mediocre buck, bull, bear or cougar look like a masher and you can make a giant look like a dink.
People give me the business about how much time and energy I put into field photos but it really makes a difference.
-
I suck at scoring. Its all good. LOL. I look at some pics of bucks and I just don't get where they got the score.
Here's another pic, but it kinda sucks also. :o
-
I'm trying to teach my father in law how to take field photos, but he still sucks. Haha. It makes every difference on the angle, distance, how you hold the buck, etc, etc. I'm pretty much learning also. He never took pics of his deer until we starting hunting together. Russ is a great guy!!
-
Much better pic! And yeah my pic game is not on point :chuckle: :bash: every year I say I'm gonna put more effort into it but by the end of the season I end up with very little quality.
-
Hockey, that is a heavy horned deer all the way to the tips. Your mass numbers are going to be great on that deer. The heavy mass makes the tines seem shorter than they are. Did any of the burrs at the bases count as eye guards? The antlers are super symetrical and the inside spread is proportionate to the main beam length. That is a great example of what a solid deer should look like. There aren't a ton of deer like that in Washington state. Even in the late hunts you are not going to find a deer like that around every corner like some people think.
-
Thanks Rainier and Karl. I think only 2-3 counted. I can't remember. Both sides had a ridge that went up to the forks. I wish I would've had him shoulder mounted. I know i can still have it done but with a different cape. He's probably the biggest I'll ever get. It was my first year hunting since my kids were born and I didn't realize his size until I took him to the butcher in town and he was making a huge deal about it. :yike:

Now I am dying to know what that buck scores. You might be right. I was thinking 175 and an 1 here and there really adds up so 183 or 193 seemed possible. On the same note subtracting an inch here and there could get you down into the 160's pretty quick as well.

I agree for sure! Getting it scored accurately is the only way to go. Very inexpensive to do as well. I take all my critters to David Morris in Portland to have him score them. I’m usually close but I leave it to the pros. Must have missed it but I didn’t see anyone adding outside spread :dunno:

I agree for sure! Getting it scored accurately is the only way to go. Very inexpensive to do as well. I take all my critters to David Morris in Portland to have him score them. I’m usually close but I leave it to the pros. Must have missed it but I didn’t see anyone adding outside spread :dunno:
No no, not here, but to achieve some of the scores I see posted every season, it seems the only way they achieve the scores claimed is by adding in that outside spread. :chuckle:
:chuckle: I hear ya!
I know you've seen it. ;)
Your right! Very often! :chuckle:.

It's definitely not rocket science. Get a good tape, cable, and score sheet. READ the scoring instructions and follow the steps. Lots of folks say who cares about score but I think it's fun to put a tape on em. Big, small, typical, non typical. They are all different and unique. I can't hardly look at a deer without putting the eyecrometer to them.

I dont know that I’ll ever have anything officially scored but the number does put some perspective to the size. While both could be “big 4 points” there is a difference between a 150 inch buck and a 180.

Well... yeah there is supposed a difference but sometimes online there isn't :P

Yep, 30" of outside spread :)

Wa. buck 2012
It looks like a 160 ish buck, but a very nice buck I would be happy with
It scored 162
162 net or gross? That had to be net.
I love the heavy deep forks and the split g3's are awesome.
165 1/8 n/t
162 2/8 gross typ

:chuckle: I think I saw this in a text somewhere.
I love to put a tape to every deer that comes back to our camp. It's tons of fun around the campfire. One guy reads the score sheet and writes down the numbers as the other one is working the tape. Anything over 120" I take to the sportsman's show or run it out to Russ's house to have measured to get a real number and verify that we did it right.
Karl mentioned it in his post, every deer is different. It is great to see what they actually score. The tape doesn't lie.
To me it's not about score when I shoot, I just know when I see one that I like I'm going after it.

Some people have real good Eyecrometers, some are way out of tolerance and in need of calibration... :chuckle:

Here is a tough one. 22” outside with a giant head/body.

Both of ours scored the same. It would be cool to put them side by side and see if theres much difference.
if love to see the numbers breakdown on your buck Hockey. I have a pretty sharp scoring eye and I couldn't even come close to 185. I'd love to see where I short changed him. Do you have any pics where it's not so distorted from being so close to the camera?
Karl, here is the score sheet. I said 185, but he was actually 183 4/8 gross and 173 4/8 net. Nets are for fishing!!
He looks pretty symmetrical, but i was deducted 10 pts. That extra G1 didn't help either. But he is awesome to look at and a once in a lifetime buck for me. :chuckle:

I suck at scoring. Its all good. LOL. I look at some pics of bucks and I just don't get where they got the score.
Here's another pic, but it kinda sucks also. :o
I thought this post/pic was really interesting because in the big pic that buck looks really nice...........
But in your avatar the same buck looks way bigger. At least to me.
(Great buck. Love the mass.)
Thanks Dan-o. Its the same buck. It's weird how a buck in one pic can look way different than another pic just by the angle, lighting, distance, etc. :dunno:

The 40" of mass certainly helped. Heavy horned deer for sure. Thanks for posting the score sheet.

sweet! Thank you! So I was pretty much on the money except I shorted him an inch on SC, 3" on the one main, and 3" on mass, and an inch on one of the g2's. Also didn't think that extra was gonna be a scoreable point.

Gosh I wish I hadn't unintentionally nuked half the deer pics on my phone. I had some fun score deer :bash: maybe @bullblaster has Kaydens CO buck he could post as well as the live pic from the year before.
