Post by: jdb on August 01, 2018, 11:40:54 AM
I heard a rumor there are droves of biting flies at the potholes this year, any truth to this?

Was there all last week. Camped at State Park, and spent our days on a sand dune.  Wife actually commented they were better this year than years past.  Few mosquitoes, and always a good amount of gnats.

Thermacell if it isn't too windy, keeps everything at bay.

We camp out on the islands, the drinks are way better there than at Mardon.  :brew:  We do take our therma cells and have therma cell laterns as well to try to keep the bugs at bay.

I was there last weekend and didnt notice too many bugs. Worst place was at the campground by the golf course. Out on the water and at the houses at Mardon's i didnt notice a lot of bugs.

Deer flies? They are common in the summer, and yes they bite.

the big islands in the lake or the dunes?  I remember loving to play around on goose island as a kid, the last time i was there it had been turned into some kind of sanctuary for terns and cormorants,  and it stunk to high heaven.

If horse  flies bother you, stay out of the willow  :chuckle: i hate those horrid things.

Dunes, water is low enough to expose them but high enough they turn into islands.

Used to boat camp on the dunes a lot. Find an island without a bunch of brush or shallow marshy stuff around. The brush isn't so bad, but you hang out any where near a marshy spot, you are into bugs. Look at the brush areas next to the bank, As the water drops foliage collects around the root system and creates a mushey area as it rots, a breeding spot for any thing that bite's. Those Horseflies are terrible if in the wrong area. A couple of dunes over and it might not be bad at all.
Goose island is another story. Spent my 20th b-day there with a keg of beer buried in the sand and some friends. I hate to see what it has turned into.

Back to the fishing part--Some of the best fishing Iv'e had up there has been in the bug infested areas. Don't know if it's my jerking of the bait due to the biting bugs, or if that's where the fish want to be.
