Title: Eastmans... Guy Eastmans CO Buck...
Post by: MichaelJ on March 16, 2009, 09:06:37 PM
Saw an Eastmans hunting journal TV flick today... I think it was Guy who was the hunter, and he was hunting Colorado and was hunting velvet bucks with a modern rifle.  He passed on a 3 year old "170" buck (*censored*... buck would've scored MAYBE 155"), then ended up taking a Nice 4x4 with eyeguards but had SUPER short mainbeams and the fronts were so crab clawed it may as well of been a 3x3 with eyeguards...  A super buck but I didn't see the thing scoring much pass 170 (maybe 20" inside spread, but nice and tall).  He never said a score but said if he would've had it mounted without the velvet it would've made B&C.  I highly doubt the thing would've made it P&Y much less B&C...

I'm just curious if this guy always blows the scores WAY out of the water...???  A cool show to watch just cause you don't see much muley hunting on TV but damn the smoke that was blowing out of this guys mouth was making the room hazy!

I use to really like the Eastmens show and magazines, but they just act to big headed for me any more. I still watch the show, but it just is not the same as it was 10 years ago! No more mag subscription for me!

Watched the same episode, they sure do look a lot bigger in velvet though.  I can't jude scores worth sh*t.  Yeah he said that buck would probably go 190 or something and 188 without velvet i believe is what he said, maybe i have those mixed up.  I heard him say probably a book buck if he stripped the velvet though.  The buck he did take had nice back forks but not wide, but tall, and yes shorter front forks.  I'd take him forsure though.

Same episode... I'm pretty decent a judging bucks from what I've seen by guessing on here of bucks guys post...
I'd shoot that buck for sure as well but it takes more than good back forks to make book!  The buck had SUPER short mains and his 4th points on his fronts were maybe 4" long...  Great backs, but with even a generous 23" inside spread he'd never make book...

And that 3 year old buck he passed on was WAY inside his ears and MAYBE 20" tall... great genetics but a real young deer and no way he'd go past 160" imho...  He'd get close, but I don't believe that score of 170" at all.

I have heard this criticism of Guy Eastman before (overblowing scores).  I have never seen his show, but I get the Mag and really enjoy it.  I guess I would be apt to be more critical of him if I killed deer as big as he does... :chuckle:

I'll be interested to see what Phool says..

Well I zipped through all the commercials, love DVR's, and have to say Guy tagged himself a pretty nice buck, I would love to get the scoop from Charlie or Michelle, or any of the other taxi's on here as to the "velvet kit" he said he brought with him. He bathed the rack in some liquid while it was hanging by the feet.

Anyhow, I paused to take a good look at the first buck peeking around the trees. Nice buck, I have to disagree with you though MJ, I really don't think he would hit the 20" mark for height, and put him right at ear width which would put him about 20"-21" since he was a younger buck. I think you are spot on as far as a score goes, 160 gross is what I would have estimated in the field, the velvet makes the tines look a little shorter than what they are and I think a mid 150's net when all is said and done.

The buck he tagged is a super buck even with the short mains, remember it doesn't matter what the fork width is as long as the tines themselves are long. Assuming the velvet mass again is making the tine length look shorter than it really is I would have put that buck in the low 180 class gross maybe 181"-182" and netting in the low 170's. A 23" inside is a stretch, you are right, and even with that I would have a hard time seeing it make 183" let alone 190". Funny thing is I have a buck that is almost a clone of that buck, minus the velvet. They did most of the score estimates in the field while they were shooting the video, I believe that if the buck had truely made book they would have shown him posing with it mounted after he got it home, not just on the wall with nothing to give it scale. All in all my  :twocents: says you guys are all pretty close in your estimates, maybe we are all way off base :dunno:

I have not watched the show yet so I can not tell you what I think it would score, but Guy has killed tons of 170+ deer all the way up to a 240+ kansas buck.  Plus he has put his hands on tons of 180+ bucks his dad and grandpa have killed. He knows big deer better than any of us will ever know them.  If he says close to book I would take him at his word.   :twocents:

My thoughts on the Eastman show. The first Buck he passed on was about 163-165 and the one he havested 183-185.

Jason those are some nice Bucks!!! I'll guess 160,183,171 gross. It hard to tell just on a front view.

I had 160, 180 and 170 before I realized you posted already.  ALL great bucks.  I figured G but :dunno:
Not a highjack.  Much more fun to look at bucks taken by "REAL" people doing "REAL" hunting.  They need to quit using their no fences here slogan.  I thought it eas good when they started but its getting old now, especially since Cameron is gone.  At least he knew how to hunt without an outfitter on private ground.
Try public land hunting during general seasons and see how many of those you take without the aid of a guide.

Great bucks Jason!  Thanks for posting, get some stories up on those bucks!

And that middle 180 buck of yours, do you have a side picture?  Thanks!

Phool, The "Velvet kit" that he refered to consisted of a hypodermic needle/syringe, a paint brush and a bottle of velvet tan. They obviously didn't spend more than 20 seconds on the subject but from what I saw he was doing things the right way. I use the same product and it can be very time consuming. You need to inject the tips with the liquid and force all of the blood out through the base of the antler. It will be finished when the liquid comes out clear. This can take up to an hour sometimes. I then paint a heavy coat of the same liquid onto the outside of the antlers and let it hang upside down for 2-3 days. Then you rinse it off and use a soft bristle brush and light compressed air to fluff the velvet back up.

I recommend that anyone going on an August archery hunt or even early Sept stop by your local taxidermists shop and pick up these supplies. Time is of the essence with soft velvet.

You can also use Pmaldehide but is much more dangerous.

Hmmm, I think this marks the 10 millionth thing on this site that falls into the "good to know" category that I didn't know before....

MichealJ. Here is a side view

I think that buck is quite a bit bigger than the one on the show... especially with his fronts, and great backs.  SUPER buck!

Just for the record, here's a picture of guy with the buck I'm talking about... its the only picture I could find on the net... but you can see how crabbed his fronts are...

Yeah, I just checked in the Feb/Mar issue.  It's not there.  We just got sent 6 copies of that issue.  My boy is on page 66 with his buck.  I thought that was pretty good of Eastman's to send us all those extra copies for free.  We didn't even ask for them.

That is cool they sent them to you...

Also, the CO buck I'm talking about IS in the magazine... check out pg 70...  after seeing one of the pics on that page, I agree, the buck MIGHT go 180" but they sure picked out the best looking photo to make him look bigger...  he's not real wide at all but he sure is tall and has got GREAT backs, but his fronts are sure short especially on the left side...
