Was just reading through the regs and noticed this change. Can no longer use a crossbow during archery unless you have a special request from the department. I see a lot of older people during archery that use crossbows so just giving the heads up. I need to call wdfw and find out what my disabled father needs to do for this .

I don't believe that a change but rather clarification of an existing regulation.

Pretty sure that you couldn't just use a crossbow during archery season if you were old and wanted to. I am sure you were supposed to have a special circumstance and permit granting you the ability to use a crossbow. That permit would have been very specific as to what type of accessories could be on that crossbow also.
I agree with Bob on the fact that I don't think the above regulation is new and is more of a clarification to the rules giving more detail.

to my knowledge, it hasn't been legal to use a crossbow in archery season in WA, ever. They now allow it with a special permit as of this season.
Edit: looks like handicapped permit users could use one during archer in the past, so they must have highlighted that sentence in error as I can't see any changes to what we could do in 2017.

I think you need to have a specific disability clearance to use a crossbow now. As opposed to in the past anyone with a disability license could do It. But maybe wrong

The rule about using crossbows for disabled has always stated that you had to get a special use permit from WDFW, that doesn't mean that everyone followed the rules.

Which is likely what it's being highlighted in the regulations.

They are just making clarifications to the hunters with disabilities program. It use to be you had to be deemed disable to get a disable permit. But then you had to submit a special use documents for certain categories like using a xbow during archery or using a scope on a muzzleloader. In the old program if you were deemed disable you got an orange placard and could shoot from a vehicle. So now they are doing it by case by case basis. If you have a bad arm or shoulder that meets the criteria for a xbow they will give you a permit for an xbow but since you are still able to walk, hike and run you will no longer be able to shoot from the vehicle.

I believe you're correct. before this change, I think anyone with the disability designation could use a crossbow during archery. Getting rid of the orange placard is also a change. I don't have a problem with any of this.

If an individual is wanting to use a crossbow during archery season that person needs to contact fish and game. I believe the person you would contact is Delores and she will send you the paperwork. In the past you could have your physician fill out the paperwork however, with some new changes an individual will need their surgeon to fill the paperwork out. Keep in mind that the state will not grant a person a crossbow permit do to pain or discomfort, there has do be some type of physical impairment.
