last "few" trips my packing has been pretty sloppy. time to reign it in. i love lists. thought id share. everything on here is pretty well vetted at this point, mainly just cleaning up the details.
-
Slightly confused, so your pack weight is 47.63#
Then it says base weight is 33# and skin out is 50.7#
Can you explain these three numbers. I spreadsheet all my gear as well so its good to see how others compute.
-
So, base weight is gear. No food, no water, etc. if we're successful, this number is 100% added to the load of game. It's also the way many thru hikers brag 😂
Pack weight is actual weight hanging from the straps. With food. Water to start the hike. Actual weight when rolling out. Skin out weight is relevant in my opinion because it's everything, and that's stressing muscles, joints, caloric intake, etc
-
so skin out is the pack plus everything your wearing? underwear, socks, boots, pants, shirt etc.? so does the skin out weight include your food, water etc? meaning your pack is 47# and your boots and clothes your wearing is 3.1#?

Exactly. I run very hot, and don't start wearing boots til later in the year or we have shorter approaches or more off trail planned

awesome, I get it now. So the only thing that would be diff. for you on a solo hunt is you would have the additional weight of the weapon, because on the current list your partner is carrying it, correct?
-
Hunting solo, I have to forego some luxuries. I'd def switch shelters, pack less wine, maybe even swap out some food choices. This is a pretty lavish camp but split between two adult sized men it's not bad.
-
two sleeping pads ?
-
I like having the foam around camp and glassing but I'm not sleeping on just that
-
Ounces make pounds and pounds make pain. I've realized I enjoy the Backcountry so much more with a lighter pack. There's no way I'd pack that many jackets. Super-down and rain gear would be it for me. :twocents:
-
im not patient enough to list all my stuff out lol, but i end up at 35lbs with a heavier pack to start with (empty)

That many jackets? There's a rain shell, a down jacket, and a hooded sun layer..

pack weight for my September elk trips excluding food, water, the clothes Im wearing, binos/rangefinder (on my chest), phone (in my pocket) and bow is 27# even. That breaks down to 16.4# gear. 2.7# clothing and 8.3# of camp. I usually carry 1 liter of water to start and about 1.2# food per day.

Winterlite AND the z-lite is a pretty darn toasty pad setup. You mentioned this being for summer bear, so maybe you'd be fine with just the winterlite?
Have you seen the Thermarest Z-seat? I use that for glassing, and at $15 and 2 oz, it's hard to beat...
-
Also how do you like the OR backcountry organizer? I've been looking at that for awhile, pondering if it's actually worth the $$.
You have it listed at 5oz, which is surely not correct? Is it actually 5 oz??

I own a couple small, sit pad size z lites, I like the full size. Extra insurance on not popping a pad and if it does happen, one guy can sleep on 2 z lites pretty dang cozy.
Pretty sure the 5 oz is accurate. I ran all the contents of it in a KU medium pullout for quite a few years and when it finally fell apart, I made the switch. It's probably the only part of my kit I really like the finite organization in. Imo, itsceasily worth its weight

It may seem crazy, but a few trips into the woods with a popped pad will usually change your opinion.
That being said it’s extremely versatile. It allows for comfy naps and allows you to stretch out on wet ground without getting soaked.
Once I started packing it, I’ve never stopped.
The extra “jacket” is no worse then a mid layer. It’s certainly not a jacket in the traditional sense 🤷♂️
I don’t see cigarettes on your list. WTF over...

The day has finally arrived. Last minute changes include my rifle instead of travs, so he’ll carry camp gear and the bulk of the wine(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180830/87fac84d4caf6a07d7036e53875d7c39.jpg)

I don't think you'll ever mention wine on a backcountry hunting trip, and not have me laugh a little on the inside.
You're a classy guy. Good luck to you guys!
-
Not sure if that is how you will strap your rifle, but you might consider running the upper strap/buckle beneath your scope. Always makes me nervous to cinch down over my scope. Just a thought. Otherwise I dig your kit.

That strap is probably the least of the worries for any scope I own.. 😬😬
Have you seen nightforces latest torture video?
