Elk are where you find them. So pretty much everywhere in the unit. I'm 3 hours from doorstep to the main road into the unit and have been going once a week since June. I've narrowed down some good bulls using boot leather and cams. Looks like you are a lot closer than me. My advice is get out on foot. Pick a few areas and once you find elk get to know the areas they are in, feed, bedding etc. My problem is I like to many areas and narrowing one down for opening day is becoming difficult. Good luck and have fun with the tag.
This ^ Get out there in the unit and learn the roads first then pick out spots that interest you and burn some boot leather. Just be mindful that bulls may not be in the same place you find them right now come September. I had the Observatory tag last year. It was easy to find elk in July and August, then the 3 weeks before the season started they seemed to vanish. My parnter and I filled our tags 20+ miles from where we scouted and started our hunt.

I would take a look back by crow creek lake and up towards sheepherder lake. Last time I was back in there their was a ton of elkand sign.
Have you been back in there post-burn? That area is right in the middle of it and from the view at Raven's Roost, it's scorched earth. May be a year or two before the elk venture that far into the burn area again.

My buddy drew this tag last year with 2 points (Lucky! I know) we spent 7 days driving, hiking calling, up high, down low, found water, wallows, old sign, but most of all........ wolf sign, everywhere. Some in more areas than others. We heard them answer our bugles, and one evening even saw them crossing a landing a few hundred yards away. The guys we talked to that have a camp there every year (for 25+years) say they've had good luck with cows and spikes every year, have taken a few bulls when someone has the tag, but got skunked after 10 days. Said their trail cams that had been soaking for a while were littered with wolf pics. They said they saw a couple cows and a 6 point one morning. My buddy some how miraculously ran into a 6 point after we left and killed it. THE ONLY ELK HE SAW OR HEARD. Hindsight, we should have taken off to other parts of the unit- further east. Later heard that area was alive with bulls bugling. The Naches was closed due to fires so that was not an option. Moral of the story: if you see wolf sign, hear wolves, or see wolves, keep moving. What part of the unit were you hunting Salmonstalker?
We came in through the west side of the Taneum and wandered our way up to the Little Naches/Taneum border. Kinda North I guess, of the Stampede...
