Anybody going dove hunting? I am going to be over at Crescent Bar and want to see what is around.
-
Headed to Moses this weekend for the opener. Almost as fun as the upland opener. This time of year the urasians are vulnerable.
-
I’m not a dove hunter but I have about twenty to thirty doves always hanging around.i assume by this thread the season opens Saturday. What license do you need to hunt them and is it open statewide?

Yes, statewide. You need small game with migratory bird authorization. 15 mourning dove, unlimited eurasion collared doves. I will be in the Basin tomorrow to follow up on my previous scouting. I'm worried the cooler weather especially at night and the spot of rain has chased a lot of birds out. There always seems to be a late August temp change to screw up opening day. Good luck to those heading out! Have fun all!

They are plentiful here still. We hunt my backyard, i but up against a corn and wheat field. Watched about 200 last night buzzing around

A b7nch of mine started dieing this last week. I keep finding them dead in my lawn and garden. I figured my neighbor might have poisoned them, but I doubted it as they are pretty “greenie”. The birds are attracted to water more so than usual so maybe they are sick. ???? A couple I have found alive have trouble flying, and are listless.
They are eurasians so not really sad about it.

Me and my boy will be out there! Its a blast and a great way to kick off the season.
-
I'll be out but I think the weather has flushed most of them out in my area. I'll also have a turkey tag in my pocket this time. Last year, I saw a bunch of turkeys in my dove spots.

Good to know. I would need the migratory bird authorization. We only have 20-30 but they are on the property most of year. I will have to pay attention this year and see when they leave.

I'm heading to the Beda Lake area in the Basin. Bringing a tall ladder to put up a dozen or so decoys and the MOJO Dove. C road is a good back up area.

I'm in the area now. I gotta say, its looking pretty bleak. Some birds around Quincy but Potholes seems pretty dead. I've logged at least 80 miles scouting today and nothing has really interested me much. Two weeks ago I had 4 potential spots lined up. They're all dead now. Hopefully the evening reveals something better or its gonna be a slow opener.

It better not be a slow opener. I have 4 boxes of shells sitting on my truck seat.

Question, does anyone eat Eurasian doves? Just wondering.

Yes, right into the fajitas with the rest of the doves, pigeons too, if they fly by. :EAT:
-
Son tells me they are better than the morning doves, bigger and tastier

I get a couple of the Eurasian doves every year and they're great eating! I like hunting them because they're bigger, slower and dumber than morning doves. :chuckle:

I'll be north of moses, cold front moved a bunch out but enough still around to not get bored!

that is really sad. I'm so sorry. Can someone come here so I can save some?

We had a pretty decent day, shot around 20 and the majority were the eurasion. How did everyone else fare?

We did well. We got 17 in the AM but only 2 euros. My bro outshot me then but I cleaned the rest of my limit in the evening. Not fast action but consistent and fun for sure!

We went out this morning around Ellensburg and hunter some public land near farming fields, but we saw only a handful of doves. We are thinking of heading somewhere else within an hour drive of Ellensburg later tonight and tomorrow morning. Anyone have any tips on locations they could share for Yakima or elsewhere?
-
Hopefully I can get out tomorrow or Tuesday.
-
Son and I got a handful on public land, was slow for us last night. Need a wheat field for sure. My boy was pretty excited, glad to see his joy for the outdoors.
