Stuck one yesterday. First legal (other than some does with fawns) deer I saw was the name of the game this year. (Yes I botched the tag notching)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180902/d4c25679afdb74e6aa77b9dc17458a04.jpg)

Just got back in town, busy 3 days.
Sept. 1, Nephew shot his 1st bear at 8am, I shot my 4x4 at 9am.
Sept. 3, Nephew tagged a 3x3 at 930 am......Lots of breaking down meat to get into fridges today. :)
PS, Bull permit does not start until the 8th.....stay tuned.

WOW!!!! :yike: :yike: That's an AWESOME deer!!!

Hector came to dinner last night, so I shot him!
He reminds me of a coues whitetail, short tines and squared off rack, hence the name Hector :dunno: :chuckle:. I have video of the shot and once I figure out what to do with it, I'll put it up! I heard him crash about 10 seconds after the shot. He went maybe 70 yards. I thought he was perfectly broadside, but the exit was a long ways back and through the gut. The video shows he was kinda curled towards me, but it worked! I watched him for almost 30 minutes before he turned sideways. I stared at his neck and shoulders A LOT as he ate.

Great buck! Love the old Nova bows. I don't get all the hype about new bows. The technology doesn't change that much and the older bows still get the job done. Don't think a dead deer is going to tell the difference
-
what do you mean, older gear still works? i cant believe you got a deer with an old bow and no camo pants. hahaha. great job man, I love when the "old" stuff prevails

Nice deer zach, congrats

Still on a high from this one Sunday morning. Buddy spotted three bucks. We bedded the bucks mid morning and after finally bedding for a third time in a spot we figured they would stay put for a bit. He was able to slip in to 40 yards above the bucks with a stiff breeze in his face and some noisy leaves masking his approach, meanwhile I crept into position on their escape route where they were spending their evenings. After getting into position he tossed a couple pebbles to attempt to get the big boy to stand and instead of standing and presenting a shot they bolted from their beds. The two smaller bucks ran down the wash and crossed the creek, the bigger buck sensed something wasnt right and doubled back. Coming up the ridge and sidehilling below me. He had one open flat to cross and I ranged in front of where I thought he would step out. I saw antler tips coming through the sage and knew the shot opportunity wouldnt last long. He stopped short of where I had ranged, I guessed 50 and drew as he came into the opening. He paused to take one look back at my buddy and I settled my pin. The wind was perfect and he had no idea I was there. An instant after he stopped and my pin was settled behind his shoulder the arrow was on its way. On impact he kicked like a mule and spun 180 degrees. I could see the arrow hanging out the backside of his offside shoulder just behind the crease, only the fletchings holding it inside the hide. In one bound he was out of sight and then silence. I gave him a few minutes and glassed the exit routes out of the area. Still not comprehending how lucky the whole situation was that the big buck doubled back. No movement. My buddy worked his way around the hill below me and glassed ahead as I kept an eye out for any movement. I crept forward and immediately found frothy red blood on the grass then I heard my hunting partner. "Dead buck laying 40 yards away!" I came around the tall sage and could see the buck laying ahead in the grass dead. After hunting hard in Montana for 9 days and not filling a tag the feeling of total relief and redemption swept over me. All the frustration and exhaustion of that last 9 days disappeared as I lifted his rack from the grass and thanked him for his life and thanked the big man upstairs for a quick death. He's no monster by HW standards, but he's my best archery buck and my first to make the P&Y minimum. I couldnt be happier and feel blessed to have the opportunity. Especially because I contemplated just cruising all the way home and not stopping an extra day to hunt on my way home from Montana. But my girlfriend convinced me Id be restless early sunday morning and upset I came home early. She was right and Im glad she knows me so well. It all panned out.

I thought this was the same buck. I was pulling the Black Nova with blue flames on the car trailer. Gave you a thumbs up just West of Cle Elum on I-90. That was a nice set of horns. The other cars on trailers were calling me on the radio but I had already seen you.

Well here is my addition. Just a little one...but I can honestly say I am truly proud of this. I switched to archery three years ago, it it has taken me three season to harvest a deer with the bow...and this weekend I finally sealed the deal! Just south of Spokane and she only went about 40 yards! Funny thing is that as soon as I shot, I jumped two massive bucks...lol. Oh well. Next year I will focus on one of them!

Had a little mix up at first light. This forkie and a three-point milling about in the semi-light - I was sure that I was on the three-point when I fired. That buck hung out for more than five minutes waiting for his buddy to get up off the ground. A bit of a disappointing finish to the season, but it feels pretty good to be tagged out on 02 Oct.

Yup. I thought I had my accuracy issues figured out. Double cleaned, new powder, Powerbelt 295 gr. - aimed just behind the shoulder and hit him in the neck. Not even close to my aim point. He dropped bud didn't die. I had to walk down and finish him with a second shot.

Awesome shape for sure! Thanks for sharing
Thank you both! We spotted him at about 3/4 mile, got to within 325 yards, 20-25mph crosswind, the variation in wind drift was too great at that range so we belly crawled to 250 yards and that was as close as we were going to get. My shooting guru buddy calculated 5.3 MOA wind drift (13.25"), he was bedded quartering on. I held on the front of his near side rear leg, at the shot he jumped up, staggered and fell over. Bullet entered low in front of his near side front leg, went through his heart top to bottom. I thought it exited his far side rear leg, but that ended up just being a jacket fragment that passed through. .308, 165gr Trophy Bonded Bear Claw bullet expanded to .70" and was loose in his chest cavity.

I was wondering if you got it down. I saw you guys hiking around the finger ridge and didn't think you had enough time to have one cut up already. Must have been a dark hike out.
-
Congratulations to everyone pulling in some nice bucks this year! The quality coming out of Washington this year is surprising! I can't tell if looking at all of the success photos is depressing or motivating.... :dunno:
-
yeah some very nice deer got this year.

Good to see the younger generation taking some animals

Nice mentoring pops. 😉

Sorry, not a blacktail. But we got it done opening day. We didn't see any other bucks and didn't see any in trucks. Only 9 at the butcher. Just sad. This guy was big bodied and had 5 does with him. He was definitely starting to rut. He's a 4x4 plus eye guards.

Thanks! We're already making plans for next year's hunt.
We took the head to Black River Taxidermy for a European mount. She wants to hang it in her bedroom. 👍

After helping others chase deer all week, finally got a chance to hunt alone on the last day of muzzy. Got this guy on the far side of the "hell hole" and needed to call in help for the packout...can't thank my little brother enough! Congrats to all the filled tags so far this season!!

Nice one kellama! Going on a solo hunt myself in Curlew this weekend. Nice to be out there with your own thoughts.

Thanks Southpole! Its definitely my favorite way to hunt, hope you have a great hunt this weekend!

Good grief, Kellama, didn't you kill one on the last day last year as well?
Congrats on a dandy!

Little Pathfinder scored on opening morning. Stalked and killed at 255 yards. Happy kid, proud dad.

I killed a 3 pt meat buck. Would have liked to hold out of something bigger or older, but I had trail cams hung all summer and never got a single mature deer on one. All young 2 and 3 pts. I think we may have an age-class gap out there due to the winter of '16 (?).

Nice one KP. I always do the same. Boy that area is turning into a wasteland. You and I did ok but I personally didn't see many in trucks or at the butcher and didn't see any when we tried to find one for my father in law. Good job!

I still get excited about shooting deer. This year it may have gotten the best of me as I took this little guy opening week. 25 years since my last recurve kill. Probably 27 years since my last 2018 XX75 kill. Told myself on New Years I was going to take my 2018 buck with a 2018 arrow from a recurve. With the way the season has gone so far I'm pretty happy I sent it early.

Very nice Radsav! Nothing like it! I just absolutely love taking animals with my recurve or hybrid longbow! Awesome bucks everyone!

Love the enthusiasm. Surely a trophy with a recurve bow. It amazes me how early they start shedding their summer coats. You'd think they'd be hot as hell all September.

Not the biggest rack but by far the biggest bodied deer to date for me. Hanging weight at the butcher was 141lbs.
Made for a great workout getting him packed out. The butcher said it was the biggest weight deer they had brought in so far. 20 yard shot, took 0 steps before hitting the dirt.

Good one man! I'm feeling your pain. Hit 60 this year. Arthritic hands and draggin' bucks don't go well together.
-
Some decent bucks this year folks. Deer numbers haven’t been great in the areas I hunt this year unfortunately. Had a rough long weekend. Backpacked into some remote country in about extreme north central Washington. Hiked in late Friday afternoon and camped Saturday and Sunday night. Just got home about 10 mins ago. Seen 30+ legal muleys in the last few days and even a couple whitetail in the the nasty canyons. Jumped a group of bachelor bucks mid day yesterday with a decent buck pushing 25+” 4 point with weak fronts. Rushed the shot as it’s been several years since I have been in the situation to have deer closer than 100 yards and not watched them for awhile before actually pulling the trigger. The shot seemed good but after hours of combing through the brush and only locating a few pencil sized spots of dark liver sized blood; I made my way back to camp. After a long night of little to no sleep I started fresh from the point of impact. Followed a very weak blood trail to where he’d made his way through a barbed wire fence and into Canada nearly a mile from where I shot. Cut my trip short and likely calling it a season.

I got my first deer yesterday morning, but no pics cause my phone died right when we walked up on it.
I've been hunting the last 3 seasons with my dad, both of us totally new to any kind of big game hunting. My dad had some experience with doves and quails back in Texas, but that's it.
So me, at 41, and my dad, at 69, have been trying to put it together on our own for a few years now.
This year, I had done a lot of scouting, including trail cams for the first time, on some IEP land north of Spokane. Had a fairly active trail picked out, and a spot up the hill we could sit. We both had second deer tags, so we were tryin' to fill those in the early rifle season, and focus on the bucks in the late season.
So yesterday, we get to the spot just about as shooting light starts. I'd been hoping for wind, but no luck there. With all my scouting, I figured deer would use the low road coming from the right (about 65 yds) or the high road coming left (about 150 yds). We sat for a little over an hour, and then, since I'm still recovering from a cold, I let out a huge cough and figured "sure that spooked everything for 300 yards".
About 5 seconds later, two deer pop their heads up about 10 yards to our left and heading straight for us. We froze, and I can tell the closest one is a yearling fawn. The second one I can't see body, only head. They stare for probably half a minute before deciding not to come right towards us, and they trot down the hill. They disappear behind some trees, but are set to emerge right on the low road. They're both antlerless, and I figured the second one would be the mature mom doe. So I flick off my safety and get ready. First deer pops out from the trees, heads up the hill a few yards, and stops with its backside facing directly at me. No shot, but not the one I wanted anyway. The second walks out behind, slightly quartering away, and then stops. I pulled the trigger, and boom! It fell straight over.
It was not the best shot. It did pass through the stomach before hitting vitals and exiting the other side. It was also not the mom doe, it was another yearling, a buck. We tagged it and went the short distance back to the truck to get Rinella's book for instructions on gutting, etc, then got to work.
The skinning, gutting, and quartering was quite the learning process. Most of the internal cavity was coated in stomach contents, so some meat was not salvageable. But we did make it back with all 4 quarters in good shape. Not a lot of meat, but thankful for it at any rate.
In the end, it was an important step in the learning process for me and my dad, and hopefully I can get my kids involved sooner, so they can grow up knowing what I've been having to learn much later in life.

Nice job! I have been hiking a lot of miles this early deer hunt on the IEP land, and this is my first year in this area. So far, I am glad there is a late hunt, from what I have heard, and people I have talked to, the late season is the way to go up there. Since early hunt just ended, I'll take it as successful scouting trip.

Some absolute great bucks on here in the last week!! Well done to all.
-
It was a struggle. I hope the story doesn't put you to sleep.
A week ago Monday I had seen nothing but jumped a couple blue grouse into a tree and shot their heads off. What has that got to do with a deer? Bear with me!
So then the next day I walk out a short spur and when walking back there are a doe, two fawns and this big buck. Just on the crest of the hill so escape just a leap away. Darn buck has his rear right towards me and slowly walking towards safety. Only option I could see was shoot over his back at his head. I shoot, nothing and the deer is still there. Repeat twice more before buck walks out of sight.
I was just sick but after thinking about it I thought I must have shot high. Buck was down hill with rear up so not much of a target. Gun was sighted in 2" high at a 100 yards and this was about 200'. The gun can't be off! remember I shot the heads off those grouse yesterday and I can't remember banging the gun so carry on.
Couple days go by and I see a spike. Very difficult shot. All I can see is his head, moving and maybe 150 yards. I burn two shells. OK, that was a tough shot shouldn't be surprised.
Then yesterday I hunt all day and see nothing, while walking back to my bike there is a buck (maybe a 3 point, not sure) standing in the road rear end towards me but looking back and only 200 feet. Again with the head shots but that is all I seem to be getting. I rest on my shooting sticks and squeeze off three shots and hit nothing. Every shot I couldn't believe he didn't go down. That tears it, I head home, grab my stuff and head to the pit.
Three inches to the right and two high. I really can't figure it. I don't remember banging it and I was shooting 3/4 groups before season.
Any way, I been seeing nothing but deer close so I zero it instead of two high and of course back on center for windage.
I thought last night now that I have zeroed it out I will see a buck at 300 yards. How prophetic!
This morning I go to the place I have been hitting hard where I shot at that first buck. There is a ridge I usually sneak up to a middle road. I had never seen a deer on the lower part. Lots of slash there. But of course I am looking when walking the road to my ridge. At about 300 yards on the top of the ridge, a doe and two fawns. Then about 60' back I see the buck. I am sure this is the one I had shot at and missed a week ago Tuesday. Better angle today though. I shot off the shooting sticks, hit him right at the very last rib, exited just into the edge of his shoulder. Down he went and out of sight. I watch for a while then head up the hill. My heart was beating a million miles and hour by the time I climbed the hill and found him. Had to sit down for a bit. I think I just gave my self a do it yourself cardiac stress test. :chuckle: Likely I will not be running up a hill like that again.
Went out got my game cart, back in, drug the deer down the hill. 11:30 when I started peddling out and back to the truck by 1:30, about 3 miles.
Damn, the recliner feels good tonight. :chuckle:

I can't believe how many hunters there are in Idaho now. A few of my old spots are overrun, so had to search for someplace new this morning.
As I was driving in the dark I was searching for three things:
A steep hill that I didn't want to climb (and neither would anyone else).
No cars parked anywhere near it.
No campgrounds anywhere near it.
Found an area that fit the above, started out as it was getting light. As I got to the top of the first ridge I found a herd, and just like the last few times out, they were all does and fawns. All ten.
A very short distance later, in another direction I find a herd of about 15 as they were moving up higher. I glassed the front deer first since they were father away, and made my way back. Doe, doe, fawn, repeat... until the very last deer, a buck! Finally!
Ranged him at 248, got in place and set, he hadn't moved too far so was likely 260, max. Mostly broadside, told myself take a few breaths, relax, and the 145LRX was on its way.
Unfortunately he slid/rolled damn near into the creek at the bottom, and would have if it weren't for all the brush. Can even see his path in the pic. Hill was too steep, he was too big, I was too weak, couldn't get him out from where he was so had to quarter him in place. Four hours after the shot, was in the 4Runner on my way home.

Wednesday was the first day of my annual week off for blacktail. Jakeland takes the same week off every year and all we do is hunt sunup to sun down.
We get up at 3:30am ride our mountain bikes ungodly distances up ungodly hills, totally relieved to reach the top so we can coast down the other side the same ungodly distance. We know it will be hell going back, but will cuss and cry about that later. Your either soaked with sweat or rain, but either way your going to be wet. We enjoy every second of it......its blacktail hunting.

I usually don't post pics on here anymore but this one was special. My Dad Passed away last month and I was bound and determined to get a decent buck in his memory. He was watching over me today. I worked my butt off for this one. The old .250 Savage dropped him in his tracks. Love the eye guards and trash. Saw a buck rutting 6 doe yesterday in Teanaway so threw up my bino's...it was a big superfork (2point) :bash:
Good luck to everyone starting their late hunts tomorrow, looks like the rut has begun.
-
Same goes with the doe herds around my place. All the twos are trailing them and hanging close already.
-
My buck in southern Idaho was definitely rutted up and chasing does, saw another buck right in the same area with another group of does doing some serious rutting action, lip curl then chase a doe with his nose right up her tail. Good luck on the late muley hunts guys

I quit hunting with a rifle 15 years ago and took up bow hunting. I never actually killed anything with a rifle but have been pretty successful with my bow taking multiple bucks, bulls and a moose. This is my first rifle kill at the age of 44. I shot him at 20 yards. I could have used my bow. :IBCOOL:

Great looking buck
-
My fiance took her first deer this past weekend and it was the coolest thing to be a part of. This is her first year hunting and shes hunting under the Montana hunter apprentice program. We were in the middle of packing out a doe I had taken when she told me to stop as she froze in her tracks. She kept her cool and opted to pass on the first shot opportunity because she didnt have a good rest. The doe bolted up the ravine and Melissa climbed out of the ravine in pursuit. I dropped my pack to follow as well. As I crested the ravine Melissa was settling into a good position 25 yards ahead of me waiting for a good board side shot as we'd talked about. She stopped the doe at 125ish yards with a grunt sound and made a great quartering away shot.
Looks like the household gear and tag budget is going up 2X!

i see 3 points :dunno:. How wide is that sucker?
I think those have to be Washington bucks for that thread?? He’s a 3x2. All I saw was frame, bedded down at 340 and I hammered him in his bed. He’s right at 30” outside
very cool buck!

Nice deer chuck. Glad to see some whitetails finally hitting the dirt

10/27/18 standing about 50 yards broadside in a newer clear cut. Wish I would have relaxed for a second because 100 yards away was a nice 3 point with eye guards standing there. Stood around for about 15 minutes while I tagged mine. Thank you fishnfur! After damn near two weeks in the woods it felt really nice to have things come together. -I also had a second deer tag in my pocket that I filled an hour later. Never have got two before noon on the same day. -and just so people know, I took my orange off for the picture.
-
No worries about the orange. The internet police were banned from this site.
Man, two in one morning? One heck of a day! I live on Whidbey for three years, prior to my deer chasing days. I never saw a quality buck like your's during that time. Congrats again. Your freezer is full!

New to the H-W Forum so this is little late. Last day of the General Season but my personal best. Love the chocolate color, I think I saw the antlers before noticing there was a body attached to it. Both of his G1's had some damage and he had a wound in the head from fighting. Pretty good size, he dressed out at 135 at the processor.

My biggest blackie had a fifty cent piece hole in his neck with green puss ozzing from it.
My step dads buddy killed the one later in the year that probably made the wound, he was a monster.🤣

This is my buddy’s first deer and his first year hunting. We pulled out a side road that had a couple cuts and a guy followed us out there but I knew the second cut was the best out of the 3 so I went to the second one didn’t see anything glassing and my buddy threw a rock and out pops a 2 point and a doe from where we can’t see. I got him setup and he made a good shot.
My other buddy’s first blacktail. Hiked down a clear cut a little to see the bottom and I spotted a doe with her fawn. She kept looking back up to where we couldn’t see and eventually she ran out of the cut so I moved to where I could see the rest of the cut and spotted this buck with a doe and my buddy got setup and made a good shot and the buck dropped.
Another one of my buddy’s first blacktail
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190104/6ee2884622d51533ab107516d2a507d1.jpg)
I also took 2 other people archery hunting and they both had more than one close shot but being new to hunting they struggled at holding still and did not get a deer. For me I was archery hunting and holding out for a 2 point or better. I saw shooter bucks all the way till the end of the late season. The 3rd to last day me and my dad saw one of the biggest bucks I’ve seen in a long time. We hit the timber he went into but never saw him again. Was a fun and good year. All of these deer were taken on state land.
