Nice pic hunt3636223!

Goal was to shoot the first legal elk that crossed my path. Hiked in solo 3 miles before light into a new area. At 7am this cow came feeding her way into a meadow at 25yds. She ran 40 yds and piled up. Boned her out and got her all packed out by 7pm. First time tagging out opening morning! Gonna be some good eating. Ill try to post a pic later.

Here she is.

Nice bull, but that's a new one on me. I wonder how long that "unique" pack job lasted.

2MANY has forgotten more about horse packing than the majority of us will ever know about it so I'm betting it worked out just fine....
Congrats on an amazing bull 2MANY  :IBCOOL:

It seems like it would catch and twist on every branch, brush, limb and tree on the way out, not to mention interfering with the right front leg's range of motion. Why not just put it on tines back, as usual? :dunno:

Or maybe it's just a pic and was arranged different later, maybe camera angle.. Who cares anyway, it's a Post them here! thread to enjoy nice elk.. why comment Bushcraft
Nice elk 2Manny!!! and love the pic.. Pack out pics make me miss the days we used to go in. I love the pack mule photos and memories it elicits..

What a year, missed 2 bulls, had a bull sneak up on me twice to only get away. Then tonight it all comes full circle. This bull was walking away from me till I used my Phelps reed to cow call him back. He comes to within 20 yards away I checked my bubble, put the top pin on the oxygen factory, breath and before I know it the arrow is on its way! I know I wacked him, I can see the spot on his hide! He jumps and walks to 40 yards, broadside, so I range him and just as I let it go he starts walking. The arrow hits him in his elbow, found the broad head after skinning. He went 60 yards and dropped, in my sight!! It was a tough season missing two bulls already, God is great and it all worked out! Man I love archery elk!

Team Joe get's it done! Rimrock quality elk rifle, first day, first light and on the ground within 30 minutes. I had the honor of being the caller for Team Joe, there's nothing more special than being a part of an elk rut hunt for me, so fun! We got this guy's goat when I bugled over the top of his, that's when I knew we hooked him then reeled him right in. Never been to Rimrock before this year, what beautiful rugged country.

Man that had to be a fun hunt!

Congrats everyone!
Here's my first archery elk!
Solo hunt at the coast. Called him in to 30 yards, shot my 40 yard pin instead and hit him high :bash:. He ran to about 90 yards where I watched him stand around for the longest hour and fifteen minutes of my life (first picture). Him and his cows finally fed down the ridge away from me and I was able to sneak to right above him. Found him at 40 yards while peeking through the grass. Drew, stood, made absolutely sure I had the right pin and shot before he got too nervous. Hit him in the lungs but of course he ran into the thickest coast reprod/brush patch he could find. Luckily my co-workers were nearby to help out!
-
Awesome

I like the “sigh of relief” look on Gus’ face

Hopefully that's not the "this devils club is poking through my pants" look.

I have joes bull at my house for a euro mount

Oh nice, I’ve seen pictures of you on joe and al’s phone before and told them I’ve seen you before on hunt-wa. Small hunting world. That bull had some crazy long brow tines compared to the rest of the tines.

I like the “sigh of relief” look on Gus’ face
That's absolutely what it is! Wasn't sure I was going to find him in that brush.
Congrats on your Bull. I call that look the " Did this really just happen? " look. Wish I had that look more often!!

Love the charter in that rimrock bill. 👍

Oohhh, Mr. Slayer I don’t know what’s going on but I can’t call in a predator to save my life (my real passion) but the elk I have a knack and a bit of luck with. I didn’t think I would ever get the opportunity to be involved with another rut hunt again but dang was that fun! Again, thanks to Joe, he had enough confidence in me to be on the team. The opportunities are rare and appreciative.

Fantastic write up thank you for sharing! Out of curiosity, how long had you been trying before this success?
-
13 yr old sons first archery kill. Called her into 19 yards. Son put the smack down on her. She went 30 yards before tipping over. Be living on cloud 9 for awhile.
I love this! Looks like my sons first elk! Best elk I ever sank my teeth into! Congrats to you two!

My last bull was back in 2014 with a rifle. I hunted muzzle loader 2 years after that without killing anything. Started hunting archery last year.

Little Naches quality bull. While there are certainly bigger bulls in there I just couldn't pass on this guy. My first bull and the freezers full! Got him about a half hour before shooting hours ended and it made for a long night! Good luck to everyone else still at it and congrats to those who are done.

actually there were several seasons that opened yesterday for the any bull tags in the 300 series GMU's Saw a nice big bull in the back of a pick-up in 342 yesterday. they drove by too fast and didn't get a great look at the bull but it appeared to have done the tag justice.

only special draw open atm for east side right? I'll be out on Sunday-Wednesday. If I'm fortunate enough to land an elk in the any elk units I'll be hunting I'll for sure drop a pic in here. Good job to all those who have got an elk this year so far. Looking great. Keep em coming :)

Ya, I think that came off wrong. I wanted everyone to see his true size. I see too many people dogging on the long arm thing. I shouldn't let it get to my head. I'm super happy with the bull! Now I just need to get one of these impossible blacktail...

Spent the weekend in Lick Creek and Tucannon and never heard a shot. We never saw a deer or elk the entire weekend. Pushed deep canyons but it didn't matter. I think the heavy wind and rain storm might of had something to do with it. The animals went into hiding-LOL
Talked to a few fellow hunters who reported the same.

If you are not up for a long story I guess you can just look at the picture,
First day I saw nothing but 5 red hot cougar scratching's. Hiked a long ways and my knees did not feel top drawer this morning so I ended up getting a little late start. It was just breaking daylight as I pulled out of the driveway. About a quarter mile down the road there is a small field, 5 acres or so and I saw a pickup slow down and stop there. As I drive by I see a herd of elk in the field and what looks like a legal bull. I park a quarter mile down the road on a FS road.
The field is posted and the owner lives behind on another 10 acres, posted also but across his driveway there is a wedge of FS land. The pickup that had stopped left and I walk back. The elk went in the wedge of FS. All this country is a jungle but I head out and pick up their tracks on the FS land.
I track them through the FS land to private timberland ( different ownership, not posted) I follow the elk in a semi circle right back to the posted property. So what to do? I decide to circle the posted land and see if the elk leave it. On the other side of the property I cut their tracks again and the chase is on. Flat country and a bit swampy I am over my shoe tops in water. Can't see much so I am hoping they go back through to FS land. Still brushy there but better then what I am in.
I finally break out into the FS land. Been on their tracks maybe three hours. Track them out into some thinning and make a lose. Takes me a while but figure it out and they go back out of the thinning.
An unusual thing happens. The elk break out onto an old road and I make another loose. I walk back to where they came out on the road to start over and there is a Canada goose walking down the road. Picking around in the leaves. This is not open. Trees are probably 60 feet high. I stood there and watched this goose as it fed towards me. Finally it is about 5 feet from me and decide I got to get back to the elk. I talk to the goose and it looks up startled and it starts walking the other way. Never did try to fly.
Anyway back to the elk. I track them through to a small patch of timber. Best visibility I have come to and all of a sudden there is a cow looking at me. I have a good rest but a small window to shoot down. Finally the elk take off and I see 7, no horns.
I'm sure there is a bull because at one point during the day he had horned a tree along the way. I pick up the tracks and actually don't go far and there is a cow lying down but looking at me. Back in the brush and about the only place I can see is this corridor where the cow is. Eventually she gets up and I see some more to the side through a veneer of brush. Then horns but no shot, too much brush to shoot through. Finally they start to go and they are crossing the corridor. No chance for a rest but I aim at the spot they are crossing and when the bull crosses I pull the trigger. Down he goes. I reload and the damn thing gets up and takes off. No chance for a second shot because of the brush. Choice words were spoken at this point! I run up and get on the tracks and follow them out maybe 600, 700 feet. I was hoping maybe he peeled off sick but see nothing.
So then I think well I am not catching them soon and I keep thinking about the bull maybe dropping out of the herd so I decide to walk back to where he went down and see what I can see. I get back there and look, no blood or hair. I then look off maybe 200 feet down another little corridor and there he is. Broadside but his body is behind trees and actually his head has a sapling right in front of it too. I aim at his neck and boom. He goes right over on his back. Still trying to get up I give him a finishing shot, actually two because I guess I missed the first with all the head flopping around. It is 11:30 and I get back to the pickup by 1:30. Was able to get back and hang and skin him. Tomorrow the work begins.
Looks like the first shot was high in the shoulder. Right below his spine and above his lungs. Terrible shot but luck was with me today. Not much to look at but I am happy!

The story was worth the read!

Wow! What a morning! I just read through all of the posts and enjoyed the pictures shared by so many! Congratulations to ALL of you for your success.
This year’s hunt was special, in that my father in law was in the hospital just weeks before the season with congestive heart failure. None of us would have believed that the fight inside of this old infantryman would have allowed him back in the elk woods! But it did!
With the help of a friend, he was able to harvest this beautiful elk with his Eastside disabled cow permit.
Way to go Gary! (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181110/1f8609349cb95edab312a920584b7465.jpg)

Well, this was my first ever elk. Didnt get any field pictures as I wasnt expecting to get anything. Got him during general rifle on public land. My buddy and I were hiked in over a mile. Made me realize how out of shape I really am, but it was all well worth it.
The Beatles are eating away! Will get another picture when it's done.

Wow that’s a great birthday bull!

Nice job to all. Some really nice bulls hitting the dirt this year. I keep trying to post pics and story, but it won't post. I will keep trying.

Eleven year old daughters first elk.

Congrats to your daughter!
-
xelkhunterx That's a stud of a Winston bull! You don't see too many of them like that in there. Ive spent a lot of time in the Winston over the last 50 plus years. Ive seen some good bulls in there, but they are getting fewer and further between. He should be counting his blessings! Congrats!

I have a small pile, hope to do something with them some day. My biggest bull had the most beautiful ones out of all of them.
-
I had a feeling trophy hunt would recognize the fence :)
-
Last day, last hour muzzy bull.
Is that by any chance a special permit Yale bull?

Furee65, great bull and great rifle! Is that a classic M99? Brass rotary magazine and counter? What year and caliber? My hunting mentor had a M99 in 250 savage.
-
hunterofelk you are correct. I used a Savage 99 from the 1970's in .358 Winchester with a brass counter. It worked really well for me and I ended up using factory Hornady 200 grain Interlocks at around 200 yards. One shot and he went about 10-15 yards after the shot and was dead as a door nail by the time I made it over to him.

late season success in the Nile unit. Very nice eating cow. YUM

Finally getting around to posting picks from my archery elk hunt. First bulls for my buddy and I. Got them both same day, 6 miles apart. Then the work started. Great day with son and son-in-law. [/img]
