Title: Remington 550-2G (rare)
Post by: PastorJoel on September 14, 2018, 04:40:48 PM
I was gifted a Remington 550-2G.  Apparently this is a fairly rare gun.  I believe it needs about $25 worth of parts to get it up and running.  Anyone know anything about these things?  As far as I can tell, it was used in shooting galleries.  It has a loop under the front of the barrel to tie it down so that people wouldn't walk of with it or turn and shoot someone ( I guess).

Just about all I can find is this

Remington’s 550 series rimfires were the first to earn the workhorse title for their kind. Production ran from 1941 until 1970; we closed out the ones we had in 1971 at $55 apiece. The 550-2G Gallery Special Variant only saw 8000 some odd units produced, 1% of the entire production of 750000. This is the first one we’ve come across in at least 30 years. From a local West Tennessee collection comes this specimen of Remington’s 550-2G, Gallery Special Rifle. It was never serialized. From its LWW barrel date code, it was manufactured in February 1950, First Year of Production and quite possibly part of the First Production Run. Quite likely this one served gallery duty at the Mid-South Fair in Memphis. Manufacturer was Remington Arms of Ilion, NY. Construction is entirely steel metal, only with a brass inner magazine tube. Stock is one piece American Walnut, plain semi gloss finish on the stock, blue steel on the metal but with white steel bolt. Chambering on this variant is .22 Short only; it lacks the floating chamber of the more common 550 and 550-1 rifles. Barrel is medium 22 inch,

I don't have the 2-G model, but I do have a 550-1 that I really like.

What do you need to repair on there?

So far, I believe it needs a new action spring and extractor components.  It also needs a really good cleaning, and it's missing its deflector (which seems like a strange component to me anyway)

What I find really interesting is how this thing was originally at some kind of county fair or something like that.  It's hard to imagine seeing something like that at the fair today.  This thing must have 1000's of rounds through it, I would guess.
