Title: CVA, bullet, powder combination???
Post by: snake on September 23, 2018, 07:01:04 PM
I just bought a 50 cal CVA, 209.   is 150Grains of powder with a 250 grain bullet a good load or starting point at least?  Shooting Sabots.  expectation is to shoot out to 100 yards.  Not interested in going much further. Thanks for any input.

100 grains of powder is more than enough.

my cva Accura I got better groups at 100 yards with 110 grain pellets with an300 grain platinum powerbelt
Smacking clay pigeons at 100 yards and the powerbelts load so much smoother and faster  :twocents:

CVA Acura V2, ~115 volumetric units measured Blackhorn 209 (I actually weigh each load to 80 grains weight), and I like to shoot both Barnes 250grain T-EZ and Beartooth 325grain saboted bullets.

My buddy shoots the white hot pellets in his CVA Wolf behind a Barnes 290 grain.

Both setups are plenty accurate out to 100 yards.   I practice out to farther ranges with my modified sights setup with the 250s.

Thanks for all the comments.  I am going to shoot it tomorrow after work.Sounds like most prefer closer to 100 grains than 150.

Loose??
poured into plastic tubes that are marked from 20 - 150 just poured not packed.  also running the Barnes 250 grain spit fire T-EZ bullets.

Sorry just got that lol. I cant stand the pellet's,i tried them and wouldn't work, might have bought a bad batch  :dunno: but i know my powder always works.

I’d be careful, 120gr of loose is about the equivalent of 150gr pellets. 120gr loose being a “magnum” load. I wouldn’t even think of using 150gr of loose powder.

not being smart but you got me thinking now.  :yike:

Been shooting this combo since the start of muzzy deer last year.have shot maybe 4 down the pipe, are you saying i should reduce before something bad happens?if yes what will the 30 grains do to my poi? since the season is running. thanks

I would absolutely reduce it by at least 30gr. I really dont think your POI will be a whole lot different but you should definitely go shoot it a couple times just to be sure.

Just got back from the range, very windy.I set the target at 25 yards fired 2 shots both centered and 3 inches high.Moved out to 50 and shot 5 shots, average about 7 inches high. how high should i be hitting at 25 yards to be on at 100.

I sent a couple pm's and am also asking on this thread to get the most feedback.

I have a CVA elkhorn, 100 grains of Hodgdon triple 7 powder and a barnes 290 TEZ. I’ve been very accurate out to 120 yards on paper.

Shot last 2 evenings.  used 100 grains with 250 grain sabots.  Do i need to clean the gun EVERY shot?  I shot 7 rounds without cleaning 1 st night. then cleaned at home.  Then shot 5 rounds tonight.

Again only my opinion and first season is over.  If in a modern muzzle loader in good condition I would continue shooting it if that is what your gun likes and shoots well.  Do what you want if you reduce...but your not being unsafe especially if your gun is rated for it.  You cannot find nor get any gun/powder manufacturer to scientifically or with actual provide pressure numbers to justify their basis for a maximum load.   I have tried and they just flat will not provide the information.  I believe it exists but for some reason it is not public information.

He was shooting 150gr of loose powder. It’s rated for 150gr of pellets. That’s not safe, or at least not recommended.
