Any of you guys hunt with a Howa? If so, thoughts or reviews would be appreciated. Considering the 1500 Hogue in 7mm or 30-06 for a new general purpose (elk, deer, bear, antelope) rifle.
-
I hunt elk with a 300wsm weatherby vanguard (same as howa supposedly) I like it just fine has the plastic stock, I do for some reason really like that howa houge stock though
-
I just bought a howa 1500 in .300 win mag. I'm happy with it so far shoots well and feels comfortable. I do like the stock it has good grip.

Thanks fellas. I was also looking at the Kimber Hunter, but it feels so darn light, I am concerned about recoil.

A Creedmoor and a Vortex? I think somebody hijacked BiggerHammer's account..... :tinfoil:

I have owned several Weather Vanguards and currently own two Howas. I have a 300 WM that has had a new barrel pit on some custom work done and just bought a 7mm-08 for my wife to shoot. I’m a big fan of them and think for a general purpose hunting rifle you can’t get much better for the price.
-
Great action. Mine in the Weatherby Vanguard. Same thing. What’s not to like.
-
I'm loving mine .300 win mag and will be adding a .270 to the mix.

I just bought a Howa 25-06 1500 for a antelope trip Im actually leaving for in 30 min. It is shooting 1/4 100 yd. groups, and I also really like the houge stock and the action and trigger are also very good. I paid 390.00 out the door with a niko sterling scope (its been replaced) from sportsmans in Kelso.
-
Always thought they were a lot of gun for the money but have never bought either a Howa or a vanguard s2. A Howa mini action Grendel & a vanguard 257 mag are on my longtime wishlist.
Good luck on your antelope hunt dc. What state are you headed to to hunt goats?
-
I have a vanguard in 257 weatherby mag. I love it.

I won a howa 1500 stainless steel with the green hogue stock. A Les Schawb rifle at an RMEF banquet. Love it. Replaced the silly scope that came with it with a Leupold V3. Very good rifle for the money.

Howa makes a great rifle. The only downside in my mind is they're not made in the USA. But I'd for sure take a Howa over some of the garbage that American firearm companies are putting out these days. My Weatherby Vanguard that I paid $320 for 15 years ago is one of the most accurate rifles I've ever owned. Also if you haven't noticed, Randy Newberg hunts with Howa rifles. I'm not sure if that's truly his favorite rifle or if he only uses them because they're one of his sponsors.

Thanks for all the info.
Okay, new question, I'm jacking my own thread. 7mm rem mag or 300 win mag? Want to hunt the above mentioned animals. I've ruled out 30-06 because I already own one. Looking to shoot out to potentially 400 or 500 yards max.
Any thoughts appreciated.
-
I love my .300's but to be honest between your choices not much difference at that yardage. :twocents:
-
here's a good write up on this.https://www.swggun.org/7mm-rem-mag-vs-300-win-mag/
-
Between those I guess I'd go 300 Win. Mag., since the 7mm Rem. Mag. isn't really that much of a step up from the 30/06.

Holes kill animals.
30-06 in my book is anaemic, considering today’s high performance powders and high BC bullets. I would hands down run a .300 Win Mag any day over a 7mm Rem Mag. This comes from a guy that purchased a Rem700 BDL in 7Mag as my first self purchased rifle rifle at 15. I paid $450.00. I made $2.75 a hour back then.
-
7mm 195 grain BC OF.754 Bergers. and 7mm rem mag holds quite a bit more powder than the .06 :twocents: So quite a step up.

All depends on the case a guy chooses to drive a .284 diameter bullet with. Factory rifle, factory throat, factory twist. .300 Win Mag.

I wish I would known the 30-06 was a bad cartridge when Melvin Forbes sent me 1 of his rifles. I give up.

:yeah: lol he just loves bigguns nothing wrong with the 30-06 :chuckle: Biggerhammer: Agreed but the case in this has been chosen if the op was to choose the 7mm. i was only comparing the diff. between the 30-06 to the 7mm rem mag. a step up for sure. that said i love my .300's and i dont have the 7mm rem mag because i have always liked my 300's.
TO THE OP. does recoil matter because the 7mm rem mag will kick less than the .300 win mag.(i don't own the 7mm but i have shot them a lot).
-
+1 for 300
-
For the record, I like my 30-06 and have killed many animals with it. I just would like to buy a new rifle and want something with a little more reach. 7mm & 300wm both fit that bill.
As far as recoil, I don't know anyone who likes it and I am no different. HaHa.
I am 6'2" 215lb so I am not afraid of recoil, but I would be lying if I didn't say the lower recoil of the 7mm isn't appealing. From my experience and reading, less recoil usually leads to better accuracy. I also think 300wm might be a little big for deer or antelope, but love what you could potentially do with it on elk across drainages.
Also for the record: I have never shot a 300wm. I have shot a 7mm a few times, but its been a while.
-
Do you reload?

I didn’t say it was a “Bad” cartridge. I said it was anemic. I have killed deer and elk with a stick. Pointy sharp thing on one end and some feathers/fletching on the other. I’m sure your 30-06 in capable hands can take game.👍
-
No, I don't reload and don't know that I plan to.
-
A lot more bullet choices out there with 300wm as far as factory ammo
-
If recoil matters at all maybe the 7mag, but tough to beat the 300wm for an all around rifle. Whichever you lean towards will do the job. I'd go 7mm for deer, 338 for elk but split the difference with 300wm if both.
-
A .300 Win Mag with a 215gr Berger is a serious hard to beat combo.
-
300wm is not too big for deer or antelope. I like shooting them with my 300wm. This year I shot deer and antelope in WY with my 250 Savage and 243 Win and they were fine but I kind of miss dropping them with the 200 gr bullets out of the 300 mag.

If your gonna get kicked, may as well go with the 300 win mag.

Unless you’re just going to use it at the range. I vote for 300 wm it’s my go to rifle and I have 30/06 and 270.
