We had a great presentation last night by  Rob Wingard  on the private lands program. There are 74 sites in region 4, Snohomish, Skagit and Whatcom counties. 34 of which will be ready for opening day. they will show up on the Go Hunt site as they become ready. 4800+ hunters use this program in region 4 every year. There are survey cards in each blind make sure to fill them out they help document its use and hunters success and satisfaction.

The Youth Hunt was a success. 22 hunters 17 parents, 9 blinds 180 decoys , 400 ducks harvested and one goose. A big Thankyou to the Swinomish and Edison Duck Clubs for opening up for the youth! Rick Holt and Rich Sibka over seeing each location.

The Farmed Island Boat tour was also a success. 7 boats ferried the crowd over to the island unit where WDFWs Kern Cosgrove did a walking tour.Afterwords the crew piled back in the boats and went for a jaunt around the island visiting Steam Boat Slew, and Mill Town.

I sat right behind Special T.

Great organization, more should join.  They are likely putting on a duck slam event for members, join to participate.

I sat right behind Special T.

Great organization, more should join.  They are likely putting on a duck slam event for members, join to participate.

The discussion revolved around doing a test run for members only if you've been on the fence, or just need a little nudge to join you should. This great ideal will likely go whole hog next year after some beta testing.

The main thing is to get you out of your comfort area to hunt for some birds that you would normally pass on and to have some more fun while your doing it.

The example I can give is my youngest son. He's decided to participate in the adult slam. He only has 2 birds left to go. So now when we are out he only looks for black ducks flying! It is quite funny when its just mallards coming in cause he's all bumded! What a great problem to have!

So get with your friend and send a email to WWADABBLERSLAM@gmail.com Get enrolled and have some fun...

Once you are enrolled its as easy as take a picture of yourself and your bird and emailing it to the account! I'll keep track of your success.

They seam like easy birds to get but I'm willing to bet that you only shoot one a season on a few of them.

So A few questions I'm sure.

1) Do I have to shoot all in one Day? NOPE you got all season, heck who even knows where coots are!!!

2) Do I have to be a member in good standing? YES, So pay your dues. You can send it to me and I'll forward it along. (I'll be checking).

3)Youth slam, so does that mean boys and girls can enroll? Yes they can but it is supposed to mean they can shoot drakes or hens (realizing they might not get out that much). Also for only $10 for them, so get the kids signed up!

4) I would like my kids to get in on this one too (thanks for clearing up the sex thing) do they have to be registered? YES either on their own or a family membership.

a. Can shoot drakes or hen's.

b. Cost for your slam $10.

5) But I’m not a WWA member (SHAME ON YOU!!!)? Well sign up, send a email to WWADABBLERSLAM@gmail.com and we’ll get you straightened out.

So get your crew together and get enrolled! It would be good to have a better standing then your partners!

I hope your reading clear down to here cause this program is a great way to go after some birds you don't normally shoot and will get you to try some different things. Hunting should be fun and that is what we are trying to do with this one. If you have any questions then send and email to WWADABBLERSLAM@gmail.com and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.

Be stoked about the season and always be safe out there!

From one of our WWA Whatcom chapter members. This intersection is near the Canadian border just west of the Lynden border crossing.

Ran into the the game warden on Friday 11/30 at the corner of Weidkamp and the Badger road picking up all these discarded and rotted ducks and geese that were apparently thrown from a vehicle over a miles worth on the Weidkamp road. The Whatcom chapter of Washington Waterfowl Association has offered a 250 dollar reward for the conviction of the people responsible for this disgusting wastage. Please Share!

MAJOR WASTAGE CASE – WHATCOM COUNTY

Officer Koontz received a tip about numerous ducks and geese being dumped in a ditch along a road in Whatcom County. Officer Koontz and Brad Otto, a Natural Resource Technician, recovered over 60 birds from the ditch. None of them were breasted and they appeared to have been dead for several days. The birds were spread out singly. It appears they were thrown from a vehicle traveling up the road. This major wastage case is currently under investigation. We are requesting that if you have any information to call us at 1-877-933-9847 or anonymously text us at 847411 (TIP411) Enter WDFWTIP (a space) and the Report.

Kyle Spragens, waterfall section Mgr, gave a presentation on the season setting process. This presentation to the Commission was only 15 min, but it took almost an hour with all the questions that we asked. I have to say he took some jabs pretty good. I urged him to produce a you tube video explaining the ins and outs of the process. Many of the slings he took were the result of our lack of understanding his role and authority with the Feds. Which is fairly limited.

We also got to meet our new bio Callie Moore who will be our point of contact for some potential banding opportunities.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190313/29c77ea77859b7be69d3ca25505a6cd9.jpg)

the Conway Boat Launch on the south fork of the Skagit River provides access to hunters, boaters, fishing and recreaƟon on the water.  Skagit County Parks and RecreaƟon provide    year‐round maintenance at this site including leveling, trash cleanup, silt removal and a Port‐a‐PoƩy during the high usage months.  When the river is high this area is prone to flooding so maintenance of the ramp is necessary throughout the year.  ss to the site is made possible through the vigilance of Parks department personnel like Mike McCutchin (lead) and crew.  Northwest Chapter members Rick Skiba, Rich Phillips and Rick Billieu recently presented Brian Adams (Skagit Parks and Rec Director) with a check in the amount of $500 for their efforts in maintaining this launch site.  The Northwest Chapter has agreed to include the launch site in their cleanup efforts in the region as part of the county’s Adopt‐A‐Park Program.

Cleanup Time      A soggy morning didn’t hinder the volunteers at our annual cleanup of the Skagit Wildlife Area    Samish Unit!  These 16 volunteers swept through all areas of the unit including the 12 blinds and the       surrounding dike, collecƟng plenty of trash, shells (spent and un‐spent), beer cans, boƩles and you name it ‐‐ discarded.  Drainage of the unit by WDFWpersonnel was well under way so access to all areas and a through cleanup was made easy.  Thanks to   these volunteers for their outstanding level of effort supporƟng this yearly cleanup effort ‐‐ Mike Rathvon, Steven Massingale, Chris MarƟn, Greg Huggins, Belin‐da RoƩon, Ethan Lehman, Jenny Barker, Chris Baker, Joe Molitor, Rick Skiba, Oscar Graham, Pat BunƟng, Greg BriƩan, EmmiƩ Roth, and Sabrina BriƩan‐Hughes. Sign them up      Get the word out! From April 15th through June 30th New WWA Members are entered into a drawing to win a hand‐built Hybrid Layout Duck Boat.  We have partnered with the experts at Fiberglass  Supply of Burlington, hƩp:www.fiberglasssupply.com to build this boat.  Fiberglass Supply offers FREE“How to Basic Build” demos each month at their facility.  Members of all chapters are welcome to join in on this Boat Build.  The build process is being documented on our Chapter Facebook page, Northwest Washington Waterfowl AssociaƟon at: hƩps://www.facebook.com/waducks.org/       So get with your friends, family members, ac‐quaintances and other hunters and let them know a one year membership puts them in the drawing for this bad boy boat.  Share the opportunity to own this boat and share our story on the Chapter’s Facebook page.

While there was nothing that could be done to stop this from happening  WWC MEMBERS  helped secure some modification to the excavation plans. Some of the spoils will be mounded up to provide small island a and some low spots that will remain flooded on a low tide will be present. Keep an eye out on the progress to make sure the concessions are followed through on.

Just thought I would share a picture of a great donation from our Friends at Woodenville Whiskey.

The founders are hunters and donated a customized bottle of Whiskey with our logo on it.

Perhaps a Hunt Wa Hunting party Table should be organized?(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190812/0f8077dcae5d6c10731c5cca424e82e5.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190812/127f6dd1e0fbe3c3e5a13b8e511798c9.jpg)

We went two years ago and it was one of the more fun auctions I have been to.  There were tons of high quality Avian X decoys new in the box, guns, hunts, taxidermy, vintage stuff and the famous used canoe that my son somehow talked me into.  Great group of people there for sure.  My son walked away with two new calls and a half dozen boxes of 20 gauge that other guys just gave him.

Rob Wingard the WDFW Private lands Biologist for Region 4 will be giving a presentation about where all the pieces of property are and how the program works. He did an awesome presentation last year before the season and really cued us in on the best way to approach using them, as well as the rules.

Several NW chapter folks hunted them a bunch. They seemed lie a great way for a quick morning hunt.

7pm Conway Fire hall. It is the firehouse just to the south of the road that takes to to fir island where the Headquarters unit is.

Youth Hunts Sept 26th Get the kids in the Blinds – signup now! On September 26th the WWA‐NW Chapter is sponsoring youth waterfowl hunts at locations in north Puget Sound. Our youth hunt coordinator Rick Skiba has secured hunt locations with private land owners.   We'll be running morning hunts, half hour before sunrise to noon and from 1 pm till sunset.  All youth will re-ceive a new Duck Call, Whistle and  lanyard. Reservations are required.  First come-first served.  Contact Rick  Skiba, reskiba @msn.com or(360) 387-2225 or Rick Billieu, rgbillieu@front‐ ier.com or  (360) 653-8571

I took my kid to this even the past 2 years and i can say the properties that Rick Skiba has lines up are some of the most phenomenal private gun clubs that most people will never set foot on.  I Joined WWA because i was so impressed with this outreach program. If you have a kid that wants to hunt, and you dont have a bunch of experience, gear, or locations this is a must sign up for event. I cannot speak highly enough of Skibas work on this each year!

All of the Slots for the youth hunt have been filled. I can tell you that if you want to see more opportunities for kids (including your own) this is a great place to start.  Rick Skiba runs this and could provide more opportunities if he had more help. Locations, set up and mentors are  usually in short supply. I joined because they provided the opportunity to hunt at an exclusive duck club. I figured my $ and some time was the least I could do to give back since they provided my kid with an exceptional experience, and I wasnt even a member a the time. Im proud to be a member of the NW chapter and they have great leadership.

Yeah, Rick is a treasure for our youth.  I feel bad as I should have volunteered time and equipment, but I'll see if I can get in on the family hunt at the end of the year if they have that again.  The youth hunt can be a pretty incredible experience, one year we had a pit blind in a premium hunt club, well trained dog and dedicated caller for my son.  Can't beat that!

My son really liked going to the meetings and especially the banquet, looking forward to life returning to normal for that kind of stuff.

They are trying to close down Drayton Harbor to duck hunting via no shooting ordance DNR land is in the harbor.

Hello All!
We need your voice!  The non-shooting zone proposals appear to be a very close vote with the Whatcom County Council.  At the last meeting the issue was tabled in order to see if the Blaine City Council (who is the main force behind the proposals) would accept a 1000ft buffer and abandon the non-shooting zone proposals.
If Blaine refuses to accept this compromise, we need to show our opposition through written public comment and particularly through comments in the live meeting.
I strongly encourage all members to make their voices heard by sending your feedback to the Whatcom County Council at council@co.whatcom.wa.us and to attend the virtual council meeting on Tuesday June 1st at 6pm.  Zoom meeting information can be found here.
Make sure to include agenda item numbers AB2021-185 and AB2021-186 in your feedback.
This is extremely important to preserve public hunting opportunity and the unique experiences that Drayton Harbor has to offer.
Best Regards,
James Ono
WWA Vice-President

Tools needed:  Gloves, T-Post Driver (if you have one), side cutters (Dykes).

We will met at the Samish Unit Parking Lot (see below) at 9:00 am .  If you have Questions? just reply to this email or call at 425-299-6704.

On September 25th our chapter is sponsoring a Youth hunt for kids 15 years old or younger. Our Hunt Coordinator Rick Skiba has secured some great private lands that most people will never hunt. New hunters will receive a new duck call, whistle and lanyard. Reservations are on a first come first served basis. Contact Rick at reskiba@MSN.com 360 387 2225, or Rick Billieu at rgbillieu@frontier.com 360 653 8571

Big Thanks to the Blue chip, Edison, and Swinomish Gun Clubs for accommodating the youth for this event.

Saturday October 9th 10am the NW chapter will be hosting a Farmed Island Tour. WDFW Cosgrove, who manages the property, will be leading the tour answering questions. This is a free event. Come check out this unique property.

(My personal commentary)
Soon this historic piece of hunting land will be turned into a mass of cattails in the name of salmon habitat restoration. They dont yet have the funding to destroy it so experience a little piece of Skagit river hunting history.

Veteran/AcƟve Duty/Youth Waterfowl Hunt
The NW Chapter sponsored Youth and Veteran
waterfowl hunts on February 5th. This was the third year
that the chapter sponsored this special hunt opportunity.
Hunts were conducted from several locaƟons from Samish
Bay to the Snohomish River Delta. We had numerous
Veterans and Youth parƟcipate in the event.
The weather and Ɵdes were in our favor again this
year although hunt success was down from last year.
Several hunters took home a mixed bag of ducks and a few

Special Thanks...

 … goes out to Tony
Breckenridge (Edison Gun Club),
Adam Schuller for coordinaƟng
the Edison hunt, Amber

the hunt. Thanks to NW
Chapter members Tom EllioƩ
and Rick Billieu for providing
guided hunƟng opportuniƟes.

 As always, a Big
Thanks to our Veteran/

Skiba who was once again
instrumental in seƫng up
another successful hunt with

Tom Elliott took myself and a young fella, Bradley,  out for the Veterans and youth hunt. The day turned south a bit when we got rousted out of our spot by an off duty warden who was out with his kids but it was a great experience otherwise to have the kindness and sharing that Tom gave to us. I had never been in that area by boat. It was a treat to see how he set up, and the company of his dog. My buddy Tobin made the connection with Tom for us.
    Thanks for that!
